Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research accomplished in this project consists of four tasks each dealing with a different class of nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. Task (I): Second-order nonlinear optical materials. We developed new chromophores and processing to produce electro-optic materials with enhanced optical transparency towards the visible (>=700 nm), increased chemical and thermal stability and stability of poled alignment for 1000 hours at 100 deg C. Several approaches showed promises and we accomplished a great deal. Also, we developed polyurethane cross-linking polymers to produce thermally stable poling alignment in both molecular-ionic type and neutral type second-order chromophores. In both cases stability up to 1000 hours at 100 deg C was achieved. In another approach, in collaboration with Professor Shea of University of California, Irvine, we have employed ormosils to produce stable poled alignments. Task (II): Third-order nonlinear optical materials. We synthesized a group of phosphoylides containing a polarizable P atom and investigated their X(3) behavior via femtosecond Kerr gate measurements. By using optically heterodyned and phase-tuned Kerr gate techniques, we obtained both the signs and the magnitudes of the real and the imaginary components of X(3).

Two major systems were developed, one of which combined the ionic transition metal complexes and a conjugated polymer backbone bearing NLO chromophores to manifest large photorefractive effect. Another is a molecular material containing oligothiophene and a nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophore. A large net optical gain (>200/cm) at a zero electric field was observed in the metal containing system. In the molecular system, a net optical gain of 83/cm and a diffraction efficiency of nearly 40% were obtained in a film made from this molecule under an applied field of 706 kv/cm. A fast response time of for the grating formation, 42 ms under 616 kv/cm, was observed.

Book excerpt: Polymeric materials with second order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties are of much interest for applications such as waveguide electrooptic modulation and frequency doubling devices. These NLO properties are presented when the chromophores are aligned in a noncentrosymmetric manner. The alignment of NLO chromophores in the poled polymers must be sufficiently stable at temperatures above 100 deg C in order to use them in practical devices. Several approaches have been adopted to enhance the temporal stability of the poled polymers. Enhanced temporal stability of second order NLO properties in several poled polymer systems has been achieved by crosslinking reactions. The resulting crosslinked network has a higher glass transition temperature and a denser matrix which prevent the aligned NLO chromophores from relaxing to a random orientation. However, slow decay of second order NLO properties at elevated temperatures was still observed in the polymers. Furthermore, the general form of the relaxation curves for the crosslinking polymers do not appear to be distinctly different from those for the guest/host systems. We have selected an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) containing aligned NLO chromophores to test these issues. An IPN is a structure in which two or more networks are physically combined. The IPN is known to be able to remarkably suppress the creep and flow phenomena in polymers. Permanent entanglement of the two polymer chains restrict their mobility which leads to a significantly more stable NLO material. The synthetic approach includes the synthesis of chromophore precursor-containing bis(ketomethylene) monomers and bis(ortho-aminoketone) monomers, the polymerization of the two monomers, and post-tricyanovinylation to activate the side-chain chromophores of the poly- quinolines. The synthesized NLO side-chain polyquinolines possess high glass transition temperature, good thermal stability, and processibility. The testing results show that the NLO side-chain polyquinolines exhibit a large electro-optical coefficient (r33) value (up to 17 pm/V measured at 0.63 micrometer, and 9 pm/V at 0.83 micrometer), and temporal stability of dipole alignment at 100 deg C for more than 500 hours.
