This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conjugated polymers comprise some of the most promising materials for new technologies such as organic field effect transistors, solar light harvesting technology and sensing devices. In spite of tremendous research initiatives in materials chemistry, the potential to optimize device performance and develop new technologies is remarkable. Understanding relationships between the structure of conjugated polymers and their electronic properties is critical to improving device performance. The design and synthesis of new materials which self-organize into ordered nanostructures creates opportunities to establish relationships between electronic properties and morphology or molecular packing. This thesis details our progress in the development of synthetic routes which provide access to new classes of conjugated polymers that contain dissimilar side chains that segregate or dissimilar conjugated blocks which phase separate, and summarizes our initial attempts to characterize these materials. Poly(1,4-phenylene ethynylene)s (PPEs) have been used in a variety of organic electronic applications, most notably as fluorescent sensors. Using traditional synthetic methods, asymmetrically disubstituted PPEs have irregular placement of side chains on the conjugated backbone. Herein, we establish the first synthetic route to an asymmetrically substituted regioregular PPEs. The initial PPEs in this study have different lengths of alkoxy side chains, and both regioregular and regiorandom analogs are synthesized and characterized for comparison. The design of amphiphilic structures provides additional opportunities for side chains to influence the molecular packing and electronic properties of conjugated polymers. A new class of regioregular, amphiphilic PPEs has been prepared bearing alkoxy and semifluoroalkoxy side chains, which have a tendency to phase separate. Fully conjugated block copolymers can provide access to interesting new morphologies as a result of phase separation of the conjugated blocks. In particular, donor-acceptor block copolymers that phase separate into electron rich and electron poor domains may be advantageous in organic electronic devices such as bulk heterojunction solar cells, of which the performance relies on precise control of the interface between electron donating and accepting materials. The availability of donor-acceptor block copolymers is limited, largely due to the challenges associated with synthesizing these materials. In this thesis, two new synthetic routes to donor-acceptor block copolymers are established. These methods both utilize the catalyst transfer condensation polymerization, which proceeds by a chain growth mechanism. The first example entails the synthesis of a monofunctionalized, telechelic poly(3-alkylthiophene) which can be coupled to electron accepting polymers in a subsequent reaction. The other method describes the first example of a one-pot synthesis of a donor-acceptor diblock copolymer. The methods of synthesis are described, and characterization of the block copolymers is reported.

Book Synopsis Design and Growth of Organic Semiconductors for Organic Thin Film Transistors by : Vladimir Aleksandrovich Pozdin
Download or read book Design and Growth of Organic Semiconductors for Organic Thin Film Transistors written by Vladimir Aleksandrovich Pozdin and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic field-effect transistors are attracting much attention due to possible applications in flexible electronics, but low electronic performance and stability remain challenges to realizing such applications. Nevertheless, molecular semiconductors have already been successfully integrated in commercial products such as organic displays, luminaires, and photovoltaics. While polymeric materials have historically lagged behind, they are currently gaining significant attention due to their ease of processing, which does not require a vacuum deposition system. Polymeric materials present a number of challenges, from designing the structure of the monomer to finding the optimum molecular weight. We present an exhaustive structure-property relationship study of a newly synthesized family of thienoacenes. Based on the results of our study, we suggest C2 symmetry for the repeat unit as a new design criterion to aid in the development of future polymeric semiconductors. In addition, we investigate the thermal stability of our polymers using ex-situ and in-situ X-ray scattering. We identify an irreversible reorganization due to solution processing, as well as a reversible thermal expansion with linear expansion coefficient of 2x10-4 °C-1. By optimizing polymer structure and processing conditions, we have achieved a field-effect hole mobility of 0.3 cm2/Vs and environmental stability exceeding one year. Even though molecular electronics, such as OLEDs with AlQ3, have already been commercialized, the fundamental questions of charge transport and trapping have not been answered for these materials, owing to the high degree of anisotropy in molecular thin films. We report an unexpected reorganization of molecular thin films of pentacene on commonly used SiO2 substrates treated with a self-assembled monolayer under inert conditions. In addition, we investigated the process of solvent annealing of an insoluble molecular semiconductor. The method of solvent annealing is further demonstrated as a feasible process to improve crystallinity in organic films without the adverse effects of thermal annealing.

Book Synopsis Studies of Polymer Field-effect Transistors by : Felix Sunjoo Kim
Download or read book Studies of Polymer Field-effect Transistors written by Felix Sunjoo Kim and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The era of plastic electronics is rapidly emerging due to the increasing development and application of low-cost, printable, shape-conforming, and large-area devices, such as organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and circuits, organic solar cells, and organic light-emitting devices. Deepening our understanding of charge-carrier dynamics in polymer semiconductors is critical to the future advances in organic electronics. This dissertation focuses on studies of OFETs and aims to better understand the charge transport properties of polymer semiconductors and factors that influence the performance of OFETs. Case studies of structure-morphology-property relationships in unipolar p- and n-channel polymer OFETs as well as ambipolar OFETs reveal that variations in molecular structure and processing affect electronic energy levels, solid-state morphology and crystallinity, and thus the magnitude and polarity of charge carriers. The studies resulted in achievement of high-performance OFETs with high charge-carrier mobility of up to 0.3 cm2/Vs. The morphology and electronic energy levels are also related to ambient stability and durability of polymer OFETs through kinetics and thermodynamics of interaction between the semiconductor and extrinsic molecules in ambient air. Air-stable ambipolar OFETs were realized by utilizing unipolar p- and n-type polymer semiconductors as the active channel elements. Complementary digital logic circuits such as inverters and NAND- and NOR-gates, were also demonstrated using the unipolar and ambipolar OFETs. Device engineering studies show that electron mobility and electrical stability of n-channel polymer OFETs can be significantly enhanced by inserting a low-dielectric-constant polymer dielectric buffer layer at the semiconductor/dielectric interface. Electron mobility was found to increase exponentially with decreasing dielectric constant of the buffer layer. Finally, poly(3-butylthiophene)-nanowire/polystyrene nanocomposites were also investigated as a means of controlling the solid-state morphology of active thin films in OFETs. High dc conductivity and high hole mobility were obtained throughout a wide range of the nanowire compositions (2-100 wt%) due in part to the very low percolation threshold (0.5 wt%).
