Book excerpt: Abstract Due to precision, flexibility, simplicity in construction, easy control, higher speed and lower energy consumptions, servo presses have recently become popular in metal forming applications. Servo press technology combines the advantages of hydraulic and conventional mechanical presses without their drawbacks. This study presents design, construction and demonstration of a servo crank press system for metal forming operations. The research involves kinematics and motion optimization, dynamic modeling, structural design and analysis, servo motor selection, automation and control, and operational performances of the servo press. The press used in this work has a load capacity of 50 ton and stroke capacity of 200 mm. Firstly, optimized trajectories of ram scenarios are generated. Then dynamic modeling using Lagrange approach is presented. Next structural model is constructed, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of press parts are performed within safety limits. A servo motor with a reduction unit is selected based on dynamic model. After that a new automation system is developed, and Cascade Feed-Forward (CasFF) control is applied. Moreover, four motion scenarios (crank, dwell, link, and soft motion) are employed for the performance assessment of press. Finally, the dynamic model is verified by the experimental results. The research study is carried out under support and grant of an industrial project, aiming to provide know-how to industry and researchers. Key Words: Servo crank press, metal forming, motion design, dynamic modeling, system control

Book excerpt: This book highlights the latest innovations and applications in robotics, as presented by leading international researchers and engineers at the ROMANSY 2020, the 23rd CISM IFToMM Symposium on Theory and Practice of Robots and Manipulators. The ROMANSY symposium is the first established conference that focuses on robotics theory and research, rather than industrial aspects. Bringing together researchers from a broad range of countries, the symposium is held bi-annually and plays a vital role in the development of the theory and practice of robotics, as well as the mechanical sciences. ROMANSY 2020 marks the 23rd installment in a series that began in 1973. The event was also the first topic-specific conference of the IFToMM, though not exclusively intended for the IFToMM community.

Book excerpt: In an era of intense competition where plant operating efficiencies must be maximized, downtime due to machinery failure has become more costly. To cut operating costs and increase revenues, industries have an urgent need to predict fault progression and remaining lifespan of industrial machines, processes, and systems. An engineer who mounts an acoustic sensor onto a spindle motor wants to know when the ball bearings will wear out without having to halt the ongoing milling processes. A scientist working on sensor networks wants to know which sensors are redundant and can be pruned off to save operational and computational overheads. These scenarios illustrate a need for new and unified perspectives in system analysis and design for engineering applications. Intelligent Diagnosis and Prognosis of Industrial Networked Systems proposes linear mathematical tool sets that can be applied to realistic engineering systems. The book offers an overview of the fundamentals of vectors, matrices, and linear systems theory required for intelligent diagnosis and prognosis of industrial networked systems. Building on this theory, it then develops automated mathematical machineries and formal decision software tools for real-world applications. The book includes portable tool sets for many industrial applications, including: Forecasting machine tool wear in industrial cutting machines Reduction of sensors and features for industrial fault detection and isolation (FDI) Identification of critical resonant modes in mechatronic systems for system design of R&D Probabilistic small-signal stability in large-scale interconnected power systems Discrete event command and control for military applications The book also proposes future directions for intelligent diagnosis and prognosis in energy-efficient manufacturing, life cycle assessment, and systems of systems architecture. Written in a concise and accessible style, it presents tools that are mathematically rigorous but not involved. Bridging academia, research, and industry, this reference supplies the know-how for engineers and managers making decisions about equipment maintenance, as well as researchers and students in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating book examines some of the characteristics of technological/engineering models that are likely to be unfamiliar to those who are interested primarily in the history and philosophy of science and mathematics, and which differentiate technological models from scientific and mathematical ones. Themes that are highlighted include: • the role of language: the models developed for engineering design have resulted in new ways of talking about technological systems • communities of practice: related to the previous point, particular engineering communities have particular ways of sharing and developing knowledge • graphical (re)presentation: engineers have developed many ways of reducing quite complex mathematical models to more simple representations • reification: highly abstract mathematical models are turned into ‘objects’ that can be manipulated almost like components of a physical system • machines: not only the currently ubiquitous digital computer, but also older analogue devices – slide rules, physical models, wind tunnels and other small-scale simulators, as well as mechanical, electrical and electronic analogue computers • mathematics and modelling as a bridging tool between disciplines This book studies primarily modelling in technological practice. It is worth noting that models of the type considered in the book are not always highly valued in formal engineering education at university level, which often takes an “applied science” approach close to that of the natural sciences (something that can result in disaffection on the part of students). Yet in an informal context, such as laboratories, industrial placements, and so on, a very different situation obtains. A number of chapters considers such epistemological aspects, as well as the status of different types of models within the engineering education community. The book will be of interest to practising engineers and technologists; sociologists of science and technology; and historians and philosophers of science and mathematics. It will also be written in a way that will be accessible to non-specialists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control technology permeates every aspect of our lives. We rely on them to perform a wide variety of tasks without giving much thought to the origins of the technology or how it became such an important part of our lives. Control System Applications covers the uses of control systems, both in the common and in the uncommon areas of our lives. From the everyday to the unusual, it's all here. From process control to human-in-the-loop control, this book provides illustrations and examples of how these systems are applied. Each chapter contains an introduction to the application, a section defining terms and references, and a section on further readings that help you understand and use the techniques in your work environment. Highly readable and comprehensive, Control System Applications explores the uses of control systems. It illustrates the diversity of control systems and provides examples of how the theory can be applied to specific practical problems. It contains information about aspec ts of control that are not fully captured by the theory, such as techniques for protecting against controller failure and the role of cost and complexity in specifying controller designs.
