Book excerpt: A compression-filter design is described which utilizes 76 broadband taps spaced nonuniformly along a delay line. Also described is a computer program, written in FORTRAN II language, which can be used to calculate the individual tap positions and weightings for a maximum-response peak-to-sidelobe ratio. Computations made using the computer program resulted in a compression filter matched to an excitation which changed frequency linearly with time over an octave bandwidth and which had a time-bandwidth product of 50. The response of this filter was a compressed pulse with a peak-to-sidelobe ratio of over 100. In addition, the filter proved to be less sensitive to scan-rate errors than a continuously dispersive filter with the same compression characteristics. Experimental results were obtained on a 76-tap compression filter designed to operate in the 1- to 2-Gc frequency range. The performance of this filter tends to confirm the validity of the technique and provides an encouraging basis for future work. (Author).

Book excerpt: The report describes the design and construction of surface acoustic wave pulse compression-expansion filters which operate in the UHF microwave frequency range. A matched pair of filters having a center frequency of 700 MHz, an expanded pulse length of one micro-second, and a bandwidth of 300 MHz was built and tested to demonstrate the procedure. (Author).

This book was released on 1963 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is shown that a linear network having an amplitude and phase response which is a periodic function of frequency can by synthesized with a tapped delay line with amplitude and phase weightings on each tap. The theory of this technique for the realization of frequency periodic filters is developed. The example which motivates the discussion of this problem is the use of a single frequency periodic filter to replace a bank of complex dispersive subpulse networks employed in a large time-bandwidth product linear FM pulse compression network. The availability of high quality tapped quartz delay lines and the ease with which amplitude and phase adjust ments can be made on each tap appear to make this technique attractive for a number of future applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A program directed toward evaluating the capability of elastic surface waves for realizing multiple tap matched filters was conducted. Various methods for generating and tapping these waves were conducted, together with a design analysis for the performance of such a device. On this basis, a selection of piezoelectric quartz was made and two 1023 bit, phase coded filters were constructed and evaluated. Performance as code generators was in good agreement with the analysis, but the loss in correlation was very much larger than predicted. Possible causes for this are discussed. On the basis of this work, it appears that near optimum filters with predictable performance can be fabricated using elastic surface wave technology. (Author).

Book excerpt: Physical Acoustics: Principles and Methods, Volume XV is a four-chapter text that covers the history of ultrasonics, interdigital transducers, theory of resonance scattering, and acoustic emission. Chapter 1 provides the history of ultrasonics and the developments of its application in crystal transducers, oscillators, selective wave filters, underwater sound, dentistry, and medicine. Chapter 2 is a comprehensive account of the use of circuit model analysis to design interdigital transducers (IDTs) for surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices. This chapter also looks into the total filter design problem for the important case of SAW filters composed solely of IDTs and matching circuits. Chapter 3 discusses the resonance scattering theory, its application to acoustic-and elastic-wave scattering, and the relevant experiments. Chapter 4 deals with the optical detection of acoustic emissions, acoustic emissions during various transformations, and dislocation effects. Researchers in the fields of electronics technology and applied and engineering mechanics will find this book invaluable.

Book excerpt: Transversal filters have been realized as miniature superconductive tapped electromagnetic delay lines. The low loss of superconductors permits the use of a compact stripline structure which offers useful delay at microwave frequencies. Taps are realized as backward-wave couplers or a impedance discontinuities. Chirp filters are formed by cascading such couplers of increasing length. Pulse expansion and compression have been demonstrated over a 2.6-GHz bandwidth. By weighting the taps, side-lobe levels have been reduced to 25 dB below the peak output. A coupled-mode analysis has been employed for predicting the response of this class of filters and has achieved very good agreement with experiment. The analysis also predicts that, if coupling were increased to reduce insertion loss below about 10 dB, significant phase distortion results with a commensurate degradation of side-lobe levels.
