Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alternating-Current Machine Design Being Instructions for the Design of Motors and Generators This volume is especially prepared for self-instruction in the art of designing alternating-current machinery. Care has been taken to remain strictly within the province of design; the reader being assumed to possess knowledge of the principles of electricity and magnetism, and to be familiar with the theory of operation of electrical machines. The designs are carried out according to methods developed in actual practice and are supplemented by data and dimensions of lines of machines actually built by several of the largest American and European companies. The book is divided into two parts: one treating the design of direct-current machines, and the other that of alternating-current machines; each part being followed by a list of questions which clearly bring out the important points to be remembered. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrical Machine Design: The Design and Specification of Direct and Alternating Current Machinery The following work was compiled as a course of lectures on Electrical Machine Design delivered at McGill University. Since the design of electrical machinery is as much an art as a science no list of formulae or collection of data is sufficient to enable one to become a successful designer. There is a certain amount of data, however, sifted from the mass of material on the subject, which every designer finds convenient to compile for ready reference. This work contains data that the author found necessary to tabulate during several years of experience as a designer of electrical apparatus. A study of design is of the utmost importance to all students, because only by such a study can a knowledge of the limitations of machines be acquired. The machines discussed are those which have become more or less standard, namely, direct-current generators and motors, alternating current generators, synchronous motors, polyphase induction motors, and transformers; other apparatus seldom offers an electrical problem that is not discussed under one or more of the above headings. The principle followed throughout the work is to build up the design for the given rating by the use of a few fundamental formulae and design constants, the meaning and limits of which are discussed thoroughly, and the same procedure has been followed for the several pieces of apparatus. The author wishes to acknowledge his indebtedness to Mr. B. A. Behrend, under whom he learned the first principles of electrical design and whose influence will be seen throughout the work; to the engineers of the Allis-Chalmers-Bullock Company of Montreal, Canada, and particularly to Mr. Bradley T. McCormick, Mr. G. P. Cole and Mr. H. F. Eilers; to Mr. A. McNaughton of McGill University for criticism of the arrangement of the work and to Mr. A. M. S.Boyd for assistance in the proofreading. A sample exercise illustrates the Procedure for Calculating the Flux Densities, Reactance, Time Constants and a Method for Tracing the Machine Characteristic Curves, Saturation, Reactive Capabilities and Excitation "V" Curves. Also illustrated, is the Procedure for Calculating the Machine Design Characteristics on a Squirrel Cage Induction Motor. Specifically, the Tracing of the Performance Curves: 1. Efficiency, Power Factor and Line Current vs. Load 2. Acceleration Curves of Speed vs. Torque and Current 3. Thermal Limit Curves. Some Tabulated Values of Stator-Rotor Slot Combinations are also presented for avoiding excessive Magnetic Noise, harmful Torque Cusps, and stalled Sub-Speed Rotor Conditions.

Ned Mohan has been a leader in EES education and research for decades, as author of the best-selling text/reference Power Electronics. This book emphasizes applications of electric machines and drives that are essential for wind turbines and electric and hybrid-electric vehicles. The approach taken is unique in the following respects: A systems approach, where Electric Machines are covered in the context of the overall drives with applications that students can appreciate and get enthusiastic about; A fundamental and physics-based approach that not only teaches the analysis of electric machines and drives, but also prepares students for learning how to control them in a graduate level course; Use of the space-vector-theory that is made easy to understand. They are introduced in this book in such a way that students can appreciate their physical basis; A unique way to describe induction machines that clearly shows how they go from the motoring-mode to the generating-mode, for example in wind and electric vehicle applications, and how they ought to be controlled for the most efficient operation.
