Book Synopsis Best Practices for Reducing the Potential for Progressive Collapse in Buildings by : nist
Download or read book Best Practices for Reducing the Potential for Progressive Collapse in Buildings written by nist and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is intended to provide owners and practicing engineers with current best practices to reduce the likelihood of progressive collapse of buildings in the event of abnormal loading. The report includes a discussion of an acceptable risk approach to progressive collapse, which involves defining the threat, event control, and structural design to resist postulated event. Practical means for reducing risk for new and existing buildings are presented. An extensive review is provided of the design methods used to enhance a buildings resistance to progressive collapse. These include the indirect method (providing sufficient tie forces), the specific local resistance method (designing key elements to withstand abnormal loads), and the alternate load path method (allowing for redistribution of load in the event of the loss of a key member). Design considerations for different structural materials are summarized. The methodology for evaluating and mitigating progressive collapse potential in existing buildings is also discussed. Three appendices provide supporting information. Appendix A presents a worldwide review of progressive collapse provisions in various national design standards. Appendix B identifies knowledge gaps related to progressive collapse that require research. Appendix C provides case studies of progressive collapses. This document is not intended to provide step-by-step design guidance for practicing engineers; however, applicable design standards are referenced and summarized in Appendix A.

Book Synopsis Prevention Of Building Failure Against Progressive Collapsing by : Ketan Bajaj
Download or read book Prevention Of Building Failure Against Progressive Collapsing written by Ketan Bajaj and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREVENTION OF BUILDING AGAINST PROGRESSIVE COLLAPSE: According to the modern scenario, most of the structures follow progressive collapse phenomenon. Even though buildings are designed to resist for all probable loads without any failure of structural member, they fail occasionally due to insufficient and poor design and construction techniques, especially for extreme and abnormal loads. This book deals with the analysis and design of G+3, G+ 5, G+ 7 and G+12 (with 10 different cases) storey buildings in SAP-2000 by performing Non-linear Dynamic Alternative Path Method. The variation of base shear and spectral acceleration and displacement of buildings along with deformations of the beams and axial deformation of columns over the height of the structure had evaluated & analysed and its effects on the load redistribution has also discussed, identified and characterized with the removal of column at various positions. The book will has immense benefit in structural designing of buildings against progressive collapse failure.

Book excerpt: Hard Guidance on Preventing Disproportionate CollapseDisproportionate collapse is a pressing issue in current design practice. Numerous causes are possible - especially forms of extreme loading, such as blast, fire, earthquake, or vehicle collisions. But it is the mechanism and its prevention which are of especial interest and concern. After the Wor

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important reference from the American Institute of Architects provides architects and other design professionals with the guidance they need to plan for security in both new and existing facilities Security is one of the many design considerations that architects must address and in the wake of the September 11th 2001 events, it has gained a great deal of attention This book emphasises basic concepts and provides the architect with enough information to conduct an assessment of client needs as well as work with consultants who specialise in implementing security measures. Included are chapters on defining security needs, understanding threats, blast mitigation, building systems, facility operations and biochemical protection. * Important reference on a design consideration that is growing in importance * Provides architects with the fundamental knowledge they need to work with clients and with security consultants * Includes guidelines for conducting client security assessments * Best practices section shows how security can be integrated into design solutions * Contributors to the book represent an impressive body of knowledge and specialise in areas such as crime prevention, blast mitigation, and biological protection
