Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the key technologies and applications related to new cameras that have brought 3D data acquisition to the mass market. It covers both the theoretical principles behind the acquisition devices and the practical implementation aspects of the computer vision algorithms needed for the various applications. Real data examples are used in order to show the performances of the various algorithms. The performance and limitations of the depth camera technology are explored, along with an extensive review of the most effective methods for addressing challenges in common applications. Applications covered in specific detail include scene segmentation, 3D scene reconstruction, human pose estimation and tracking and gesture recognition. This book offers students, practitioners and researchers the tools necessary to explore the potential uses of depth data in light of the expanding number of devices available for sale. It explores the impact of these devices on the rapidly growing field of depth-based computer vision.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this jOint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 40 (thesis year 1995) a total of 10,746 thesis titles from 19 Canadian and 144 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 40 reports theses submitted in 1995, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The concept of structured light has become increasingly popular amongst the optics research community. This concept refers to the study, generation, and applications of light whose intensity, phase, and/or polarization present spatial variations that endow it with interesting or useful properties. These degrees of freedom can carry information about the media in which light propagated and interacted with. Hence it is important to know how to manipulate them, in order to characterize the media/optical systems. This information can also enable correcting or eliminating biases in light-based measurement techniques. This thesis reports on four main projects in which structured light, polarization and/or birefringence play a vital role and intertwine: 1. Study of reflectors for structured illumination via conformal maps. 2. Polarization shearing interferometry via geometric phase. 3. Polarization super-resolution microscopy with simultaneous estimation of 3D localization, 3D orientation and wobble for single emitters. 4. Reverberant shearing elastography for anisotropic materials. The first project is on structured illumination and aims to give a conceptual and visual tool for the design and analysis of reflectors through a simple complex quadratic map that transforms the shape of a reflector into a curve, which we call the "light curve", that indicates where light is going after reflection. The second and third projects are based on light with structured polarization distributions, the coupling of polarization to other degrees of freedom of interest, and ultimately to a measurable structured intensity distribution. To achieve this, we utilize methodologies based on devices with spatially-varying birefringence, generated either via stress-induced birefringence, such as the stressed engineered optic (SEO), or with liquid crystals, such as Q-plates. The device proposed in the second project, the geometric phase shearing interferometer (GPSI), enables a wide variety of shearing geometries while being compact and robust to vibrations since its implementation is in-line. It is based on shearing two orthogonally circularly polarized replicas of the original beam, which interfere not in the traditionally sense but by creating a polarization structure that depends on the phase difference between the displaced/deformed replicas. The third project is a super-resolution technique for polarization fluorescence microscopy that allows the characterization of 3D localization plus 3D orientation and wobbling of single emitters. It is based on using the SEO to encode this information into the point spread function (PSF) shape, i.e. the image of a single point formed by the optical system. Previously the SEO had been used in single-shot 2D polarimetry. Its extension to super resolution fluorescence microscopy stems from the fact that fluorophores emit light as dipoles and that this can be thought of as a generalization to a 3D polarization problem. The last project on reverberant shearing elastography, while not originally envisioned under the scope of structured light, can be thought of as a mechanical analogue. For this project, polarization and birefringence play a key role to characterize the elastic properties of materials through the complex autocorrelation of the shearing waves present in the reverberant chamber"--Pages xix-xx
