Book excerpt: Nine tests were conducted in which a 20-foot-diameter ribbon parachute was deployed at dynamic pressures of 1710 to 4290 psf. The test data are analyzed, and the test parachute's design specifications are given. The parachute is structurally adequate to retard a 1100-pound payload from a Mach 2.2 deployment at up to 4300 psf.

Book excerpt: In order to satisfy the continual need for recovery systems capable of deployment at higher dynamic pressures, a parachute research program has been carried on over the last ten years to increase the capability of ribbon parachutes from subsonic up to Mach 3.0. The parachute used for these tests was a specially designed 20-ft-diam chute developed by Sandia Corporation using a new type of reinforced selvage ribbon and specially designed 12,000-lb tensile strength suspension lines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 26-ft-diameter ribbon parachute deployed using a pilot parachute system has been developed at Sandia National Laboratories for the recovery of a 760-lb payload released at subsonic and transonic speeds. The wide range of deployment dynamic pressures led to the design, utilizing wind tunnel testing and computer simulation, of a unique pilot parachute system verified in full-scale flight tests. Performance data from 20 full-scale flight tests were used to evaluate system performance and structural validity. The concical ribbon parachute design chosen for this development effort follows the practice of previous Sandia National Laboratory parachute development programs for high performance airdropped payloads. The design process for this parachute system included a tradeoff study to evaluate and compare the performance between an equivalent drag area 26-foot-diameter single parachute system and a cluster system of three 14-ft-diameter parachutes. The results showed a small advantage for the cluster system in inflation and initial deceleration characteristics. However, the higher cost, higher weight, greater packing complexity and greater risk involved in the development of the cluster system outweighed the performance advantages and led to the choice of the 26-ft-diameter parachute as the baseline design for the development. This paper describes the design and performance of the 26-ft-diameter parachute which was chosen for the recovery of a 760-lb payload. The results of 20 full-scale flight test of this parachute system are summarized. 8 refs., 13 figs., 2 tabs.

Book excerpt: Sandia Laboratory is conducting a continuing parachute research program to investigate the feasibility of deploying a heavy duty 20-ft-diam ribbon parachute at high dynamic pressures and Mach numbers of 2 to 3. The author earlier reported results of tests up to M=2.2- and 4290- psf dynamic pressure. This paper presents results of data from three additional tests at increased speeds up to M=2.43 and 5700 psf dynamic pressure.

Book excerpt: A reefed B.2-meter nominal-diameter (40-ft) disk-gap-band parachute was flight tested as part of the NASA Supersonic High Altitude Parachute Experiment (SHAPE) program. A three-stage rocket was used to drive an instrumented test payload to an altitude of 43.6 km (143 000 ft) and a Mach number of 2.58 where the parachute was deployed by means of a mortar. After a time delay of about 8.5 seconds, the parachute was disreefed at a Mach number of 0.99. The report contains an analysis of parachute inflation, drag, and stability for both the reefed and unreefed parts of the test. In addition, detailed descriptions of the test parachute, the reefing system, and the parachute packing procedurea are included.

Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance data are presented for two types of ribbon parachutes. The parachutes were forcibly deployed from an air-launched test vehicle at altitudes from 55,000 feet to 70,000 feet and at Mach numbers between 0.92 and 1.52. Opening shock, steady-state drag performance, and canopy-porosity effects are evaluated with respect to Mach number and dynamic pressure. The conical canopy design appears to function far better than the flat canopy at supersonic deployment speeds. The relatively high-porosity conical design improves the parachute stability, with the added benefit of a low opening shock. The drag efficiency of the conical canopy is equivalent to that of the flat canopy having 50-percent-lower porosity. Riser elasticity and length also appear to be important parameters affecting the parachute stability. Reducing the weight of the test vehicle by a factor of one-third had a negligible effect on the stability and drag characteristics of the parachute.

Book excerpt: Ten flight tests of modified-ringsail, disk-gap-band, and cross parachute configurations with deployment at Mach numbers and dynamic pressures corresponding to conditions expected during entry into a Martian atmosphere have been completed. Comparison of flight results indicates that theoretical snatch force values were never exceeded when the deployment techniques of these tests were used. Opening loads showed no definite trend with Mach number. Values for filling times compared favorably with generally accepted empirical curves based on 15-percent geometric porosity. Canopy stability was good when Mach numbers were below 1.4 for the modified-ringsail and disk-gap-band configurations.

Book excerpt: This report describes, and documents the results of a long term, experimental track test program conducted to advance those technologies associated with parachute operation at high Mach numbers and low altitudes; that is, at high dynamic pressures. The objective of the program was to determine deployment techniques, performance characteristics, and structural design criteria for nylon and Kevlar hemisflo parachutes operating at dynamic pressures up to 6000 psf. A total of 20 sled test runs were made; three tests provided no parachute performance data because of deployment system malfunctions, three tests were made with the Tomahawk sled at Mach 1.2 to establish a deployment technique, and 14 tests were made with the Arrowhead sled at Mach numbers of 1.5, 1.8, and 2.2 to obtain the comparative performance and structural integrity data. The filling times, opening shock factors, stability angles, and projected areas of the nylon and Kevlar parachutes were approximately equal for all test conditions. The Kevlar parachutes generated approximately 50 percent higher deployment forces, 22 percent lower opening forces, and 18 percent lower steady state drag forces than the nylon parachutes.

Book excerpt: Parachute design and performance data were obtained on a series of 24 rocket-powered sled tests conducted on the track test facility at the Air Force Missile Development Center, Holloman Air Force base, New Mexico. The program was conducted to advance the state of the art of textile parachute technology with respect to high dynamic pressure operation. Parachute deployment velocities, ranging between Mach 1.0 and 1.5, were obtained with the Tomahawk parachute test sled operating in either single stage or double stage, pusher configuration. Parachute types that were investigated included Hyperflo, Hemisflo, Reefed Conical Ribbon and Supersonic Guide Surface designs.
