Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several years the world has relied on electronics for information processing. However, we are nearing the limits of traditional electronic signal processing and transmission. Optical technology will be required in order to gain processing rates above 50 GHz and a transmission distance greater than 1 meter. The optical technology is described as photonics, which is the analog of electronics. This means that photons, rather than electrons, will be used to acquire, store, transmit and process information. Many photonic applications are already in use. These include fiber-optic communication lines, diode laser sources, organic liquid-crystal displays and optical memories There are many advantages of photonics over electronics. Optical switching, for example, occurs on a femtosecond time scale. No electronic process can come close to matching that time, but optical processes can. And with optical signals, there is no electrical and magnetic interference, so there is less crosstalk between channels.

This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general, convergent approach to the synthesis of a series of stilbene- (via Heck coupling) and azo- (via Mills coupling) based donor-acceptor, second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores is reported. The synthetic strategy allows the preparation of both acid- and base-reactive structures, yielding diamine functionalized chromophores for incorporation into polyimide backbones. Also presented is a simple method for the oxidation of electron-deficient phenyl hydroxylamines to the corresponding nitroso compounds in homogeneous media using tert-butyl hypochlorite. This oxidative procedure provides the aromatic nitroso compounds in high yields, even with substrates that produce the corresponding azoxy derivatives as byproducts under standard heterogeneous oxidation conditions.
Book Synopsis High Performance Nonlinear Optical Polymers --Design and Synthesis of Side-Chain Polyquinolines by :
Download or read book High Performance Nonlinear Optical Polymers --Design and Synthesis of Side-Chain Polyquinolines written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel class of second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) side-chain polymer: side-chain polyquinolines was developed. The synthetic approach includes the synthesis of chromophore precursor-containing bis(ketomethylene) monomers and bis(ortho-aminoketone) monomers, the polymerization of the two monomers, and post-tricyanovinylation to activate the side-chain chromophores of the poly- quinolines. The synthesized NLO side-chain polyquinolines possess high glass transition temperature, good thermal stability, and processibility. The testing results show that the NLO side-chain polyquinolines exhibit a large electro-optical coefficient (r33) value (up to 17 pm/V measured at 0.63 micrometer, and 9 pm/V at 0.83 micrometer), and temporal stability of dipole alignment at 100 deg C for more than 500 hours.

Download or read book Design, Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Nonlinear Optical Materials written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research accomplished in this project consists of four tasks each dealing with a different class of nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. Task (I): Second-order nonlinear optical materials. We developed new chromophores and processing to produce electro-optic materials with enhanced optical transparency towards the visible (>=700 nm), increased chemical and thermal stability and stability of poled alignment for 1000 hours at 100 deg C. Several approaches showed promises and we accomplished a great deal. Also, we developed polyurethane cross-linking polymers to produce thermally stable poling alignment in both molecular-ionic type and neutral type second-order chromophores. In both cases stability up to 1000 hours at 100 deg C was achieved. In another approach, in collaboration with Professor Shea of University of California, Irvine, we have employed ormosils to produce stable poled alignments. Task (II): Third-order nonlinear optical materials. We synthesized a group of phosphoylides containing a polarizable P atom and investigated their X(3) behavior via femtosecond Kerr gate measurements. By using optically heterodyned and phase-tuned Kerr gate techniques, we obtained both the signs and the magnitudes of the real and the imaginary components of X(3).

Book Synopsis A Molecular Architectural Approach to Second-order Nonlinear Optical Materials by :

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design and synthesis of a family of calix[4]arene-based nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores are discussed. The calixarene chromophores are macrocyclic compounds consisting These molecules were synthesized such of four simple D-[pi]-A units bridged by methylene groups. These molecules were synthesized such that four D-n-A units of the calix[4]arene were aligned along the same direction with the calixarene in a cone conformation. These nonlinear optical super-chromophores were subsequently fabricated into covalently bound self-assembled monolayers on the surfaces of fused silica and silicon. Spectroscopic second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements were carried out to determine the absolute value of the dominant element of the nonlinear susceptibility, [Chi][sub zzz], and the average molecular alignment, [Psi]. We find a value of [Chi][sub zzz][approximately] 1.5 [times] 10[sup [minus]7] esu (60 pm/V) at a wavelength of 890 nm, and [Psi] [approximately] 36[degrees] with respect to the surface normal.

This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decades have witnessed the development of new materials with large nonlinear optical properties, which have made them attractive candidats for a broad spectrum of breakthrough applications in the electro-optic and photonic fields (e.g., telecommunication and computing). A deeper understanding of the relationship between, on the one hand, the chemical structure and, on the other hand, the electronic and (linear and nonlinear) optical properties has proven useful for the rational design of new efficient materials. Reaching such an understanding has attracted major interest in the scientific community worldwide in both academia and industry. Therefore, the development of new efficient NLO chromophores and materials along with commercial devices of high quality is helped via the establishment of multidisciplinary research teams combining: (i) the theoretical modeling using quantum-chemical computational calculations; (ii) the organic synthesis; (iii) the optical characterization; and (iv) the device fabrication. In this dissertation, quantum-chemistry is used to evaluate the second- and third-order NLO properties of series of new chromophores and take advantage of a feedback loop with the experimental team to understand the structure-property relationships.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical methods play a significant role in the rapidly growing field of nonlinear optical materials. This volume discusses a number of successful or promising contributions. The overall theme of this volume is twofold: (1) the challenges faced in computing and optimizing nonlinear optical material properties; and (2) the exploitation of these properties in important areas of application. These include the design of optical amplifiers and lasers, as well as novel optical switches. Research topics in this volume include how to exploit the magnetooptic effect, how to work with the nonlinear optical response of materials, how to predict laser-induced breakdown in efficient optical devices, and how to handle electron cloud distortion in femtosecond processes.
