This book was released on 1971 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The invention relates to an automatic control apparatus for a liquid cooled spacesuit which maintains the temperature of the wearer at levels suitable for his actual physiological needs during varying periods of work and rest. The apparatus frees the crewman from the task of manual control and the problems incumbent with the possibility of premature or excessive cooling and insufficient cooling associated therewith. The invention is based on findings that change in mean body temperature is an index of heat tolerance since, under transient heat loads, mean body temperature rises as a linear function of heat stress. Accordingly, the apparatus of the present invention controls the temperature of the inlet water to the garment responsive to mean body temperature and its time rate of change. The cooling system includes a diverter valve 24 which is operated by an electro-pneumatic transducer 30 in response to control signals from controller 32. Temperature input signals are supplied to the controller 32 from temperature sensors attached to the wearer a t the ear canal, shoulder, chest, bicep, and lower abdomen. Changes in temperatures are electronically amplified, summed, and converted to a diverter valve command proportional to the deviation of the summed signal from a set point value and to the rate of change of the summed signal from its set point. The novelty of the invention lies in the combination of elements to provide a control for regulating the inlet water temperature of a liquid cooling garment which is automatically responsive to actual physiological needs of the wearer as measured by his mean body temperature and its time rate of change."--Page [i].
Download or read book Protective Clothing written by F. Wang and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-08-04 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protective clothing protects wearers from hostile environments, including extremes of heat and cold. Whilst some types of protective clothing may be designed primarily for non-thermal hazards (e.g. biological hazards), a key challenge in all protective clothing remains wearer comfort and the management of thermal stress (i.e. excessive heat or cold). This book reviews key types of protective clothing, technologies for heating and cooling and, finally, modeling aspects of thermal stress and strain. Explores different types of protective clothing, their uses and their requirements, with an emphasis on full-scale or prototype clothing, including immersion suits, body armour and space suits Considers novel and commercial technologies for regulating temperature in protective clothing, including phase change materials, shape memory alloys, electrically heated clothing and air and water perfusion-based cooling systems Reviews the human thermoregulatory system and the methods of modelling of thermal stress in protective clothing through various conditions, including cold water survival and firefighting

Book Synopsis Protective Textiles from Natural Resources by : Md. Ibrahim H. Mondal
Download or read book Protective Textiles from Natural Resources written by Md. Ibrahim H. Mondal and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2022-06-15 with total page 966 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protective Textiles from Natural Resources provides systematic coverage of the fundamentals, production methods, processing techniques, characterization techniques, properties and applications of natural textile products for protective purposes. The subject of this book is an important kind of technical textile designed to protect the wearer from injuries, illness and death. They offer enhanced protection against phenomena including heat, cold, flame, chemical, biological, nuclear agents, radiation, disaster and even ballistics. As no single type of clothing can be adequate for all kinds of protection, extensive research is carried out to develop protective clothing for specialized civilian and military applications. The latest research on the use of natural fibres in PPE is also covered, which could make a significant contribution to the fight against the spread of COVID-19. This comprehensive guide explores a wide variety of themes from material processing and design to finished products, through protection against specific hazards to specific applications, including all significant new developments on natural materials for protective textiles. Explains the latest technologies related to fibre extraction from natural sources, chemical treatments, weave constructions, fabric finishes and coatings. Includes the latest research on natural fibers in personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect wearers from bacterial and viral contamination. Explains the state of the art in testing methods and standards for protective clothing.
Book Synopsis Evaluation of the Efficiency of Liquid Cooling Garments Using a Thermal Manikin by :
Download or read book Evaluation of the Efficiency of Liquid Cooling Garments Using a Thermal Manikin written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquid cooling garments (LCG) absorb heat from both the human body and the environment. The cooling efficiency is influenced by the configurations of the LCG and clothing ensembles worn over the LCG (outer clothing, e.g. personal protective equipment), and environmental conditions. Thermal manikins (TM) have been used to evaluate the performance of LCG systems and to determine the amount of heat that a LCG can extract from a TM. However, effects of the outer clothing's insulation on cooling efficiency have not been investigated. The purpose of this study was to use a TM to investigate the relationship between LCG efficiency, insulation of the outer clothing, and water inlet temperature (Tin).
