Book excerpt: Widely tunable single channel fiber lasers operating in the 1550nm wavelength region are needed as laser source for applications such as wavelength-division- multiplexed (WDM) communication systems, fiber sensors, spectroscopy, and optical fiber gyroscopes. Fiber lasers are emerging as an attractive alternative technology for wavelength-selectable WDM source for direct compatibility with fiber-optic transmission medium, excellent amplifying properties of rare-earth doped fibers, rapidly continuing progress in novel fiber gain media, maturity and robustness of the laser diode pumps used, and availability of fiber-based components. The tunable laser applications of interest in this work have distinct performance requirement, which is the need for wide tunability (the ability to tune the lasing emission through a wide range of wavelengths).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a contemporary overview of the technologies of single-frequency fiber lasers. The development of single-frequency fiber lasers is one of the most significant achievements in the field of laser photonics over the past two decades. Owing to the crucial demands of a laser sources with highly stable single-frequency operation, narrow linewidth, low noise, scalable to high output power, compact and robustness structure, fiber lasers have been intensively studied since its introduction to the single-frequency laser community and they still continuously proceed to trigger the emergence of new technologies and applications. This book systematically demonstrates the single-frequency fiber laser technologies from fundamental principles to state-of-the-art progress. Details of selected typical applications of single-frequency fiber lasers are also given and discussed. The reader will acquire a good knowledge of the current situation within this important field.

Book excerpt: As rapid technological developments occur in electronics, photonics, mechanics, chemistry, and biology, the demand for portable, lightweight integrated microsystems is relentless. These devices are getting exponentially smaller, increasingly used in everything from video games, hearing aids, and pacemakers to more intricate biomedical engineering and military applications. Edited by Kris Iniewski, a revolutionary in the field of advanced semiconductor materials, Integrated Microsystems: Electronics, Photonics, and Biotechnology focuses on techniques for optimized design and fabrication of these intelligent miniaturized devices and systems. Composed of contributions from experts in academia and industry around the world, this reference covers processes compatible with CMOS integrated circuits, which combine computation, communications, sensing, and actuation capabilities. Light on math and physics, with a greater emphasis on microsystem design and configuration and electrical engineering, this book is organized in three sections—Microelectronics and Biosystems, Photonics and Imaging, and Biotechnology and MEMs. It addresses key topics, including physical and chemical sensing, imaging, smart actuation, and data fusion and management. Using tables, figures, and equations to help illustrate concepts, contributors examine and explain the potential of emerging applications for areas including biology, nanotechnology, micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), microfluidics, and photonics.

Book excerpt: Erbium fibre lasers offer a large variety of features such as large tuning range /1/, high output power /1/, modelocking at repetition rates beyond 10 GHz /2/, Q-switching /3/ and single longitudinal mode operation /4/. In this paper we present a 980 nm laser diode pumped erbium-doped fibre ring laser that combines a large tuning range of 33 nm with picosecond pulse generation by active modelocking at repetition rates up to 6 GHz.

Their high-efficiency operation is of interest to almost all of the applications. This Thesis explores the ultra-high efficiency rare-earth-doped fiber lasers in the infrared and visible wavelengths. Specifically, an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) for deep-space communications was optimized and the world's first diode-pumped direct-oscillating silicate terbium-doped fiber laser (TDFL) was explored. For the deep-space EDFA, a numerical model for the amplifier was developed with which the raw amplifier efficiency was boosted all the way to the quantum defect limit by properly optimizing the amplifier design. Nonlinear optical (NLO) effects were calculated and the constraints they place on the operational data format were revealed. Within the NLO-free data format space, the dynamic gain effects were quantified and presented on the data format map. Their impact on the efficiency of the whole communication system was discussed. For the visible TDFL, a model for the laser was developed incorporating excited-state absorption (ESA), which is the major obstacle to lasing. A full spectroscopic characterization of the Tb3+ in silicate glass hosts was carried out. Two techniques for mitigating ESA were proposed and verified numerically with the model and the obtained parameters. A comprehensive design of the fiber laser was also performed yielding the optimum fiber design to achieve lasing. Finally, the experiments that laid down the foundation for realizing the visible TDFL were presented."--Page vii.
