Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This thesis presents the design, fabrication, capabilities, and analysis of a test-bed Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) used in developing a vision-based flight control algorithm. Vision-based controlled flight and its further developments are geared towards use on MAVs of the future. A test-bed airplane was designed from MAV concepts, and was large enough to accommodate the current commercial components available on the market. Two generations of the vision-based MAV were developed and tested. Each generation had 0.6 m wingspan and used a pusher configuration with a flexible wing concept. The second generation, however, had an improved fuselage and wing design, drive system, and a unique morphing mechanism. Both vehicles were tested and compared during numerous flight and wind tunnel tests. Effects of the morphing mechanism on the flexible wing were analyzed in the wind tunnel using the digital image correlation method.

Significant advances in the miniaturization of electronics make it now possible to use vehicles of this type in a detection or surveillance role to carry visual, acoustic, chemical, or biological sensors. Interestingly, many of the advances in MAV technology can be traced directly to annual student competitions, begun in the late 1990s, that use relatively low cost model airplane equipment. The wide variety of configurations entered in these contests and their ongoing success has led to a serious interest in testing the performance of these vehicles for adaptation to practical applications. MAVs present aerodynamic issues unique to their size and the speeds at which they operate. Of particular concern is the aerodynamic efficiency of various fixed wing concepts. Very little information on the performance of low aspect ratio wing planforms existed for this flight regime until MAVs became of interest and the proliferation of fixed wing designs has since expanded. This book presents a brief history of unmanned air vehicles and offers elements of aerodynamics for low aspect ratio wings. Propulsion and the basic concepts for fixed wing MAV design are presented, as is a method for autopilot integration. Three different wing configurations are presented in a series of step-by-step case studies. The goal of the book is to assist both working professionals and students to design, build, and fly MAVs, and do so in a way that will advance the state of the art and lead to the development of even smalleraircraft.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Micro air vehicles (MAVs) are a special subset of unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) that warrant a significant level of scientific interest. In general, MAVs are small, inexpensive and often expendable platforms, flown by remote pilot, or autopilot. Because they are often flown by inexperienced pilots or autonomous control, they need to have very reliable and benign flight characteristics govern the design. The University of Florida has developed a series of MAVs that adopt a flexible-wing concept, most notably featuring a carbon fiber structure and a thin extensible membrane skin. Because their design requirements mandate that they perform reliably in flight, careful thought and consideration must go into a MAV design. Some of the design may come from intuition and experience, but it must ultimately be verified through quantitative testing. In addition, the design process must be performed in a way that is accurate and repeatable. The purpose of this research was to develop an efficient and accurate methodology for designing, producing and reproducing MAVs. This approach evolved into a rapid prototyping process of designing and manufacturing MAVs while still maintaining geometric accuracy and aerodynamic integrity. The solution was the development of a software-based design tool, called MAVLAB, which incorporated specialized CAD design features, aerodynamic analysis tools and rapid manufacturing through automated machining. This thesis includes an overview of the University of Florida s design procedure, an example case study and a users' manual for MAVLAB.

Book excerpt: In the field of micro-aerial vehicles (MAVs), simplicity of design is an important design characteristic. Simplicity in this context implies light weight, a prerequisite for flapping flight, and from a practical standpoint it aids in the manufacture and operation of the mechanism on such a small scale. However, simplicity comes at a price: as mechanisms are simplified they have fewer degrees of freedom, lower controllability, less power output. All of these will effect the ability of the mechanism to generate lift, but the losses can be minimized through proper design and implementation. This thesis describes the design and fabrication of a flapping-wing MAV deriving inspiration from the biological mechanisms of a dragonfly. Dragonflies flap with an inclined stroke plane for hovering flight, which in conjunction with their two pairs of wings, presents an unexplored area of research for MAVs. Small changes in the hovering-flight wing kinematics create large simplifications in their mechanical reproduction. The MAV utilizes these simplifications while maintaining the most important characteristics of dragonfly hovering flight, including passive rotation of the wings, reliance on drag forces to generate lift, and the fluid interactions between adjacent wings flapping out-of-phase. Two successive prototypes are presented, focusing on component design and fabrication techniques. These prototypes allow for easy modification of kinematic variables (phase shift between the fore-and hind-wings and factors that affect wing angle-of-attack) and component variables (most importantly, wing characteristics: size, shape, flexibility), important for future optimization. Initial experimental validation of the prototypes is presented. To facilitate the experimental validation, a mechanical flapping wing mechanism has been designed and fabricated which is able to reproduce the high-stroke-plane kinematics utilized by dragonflies, an ability lacking in present flapping mechanisms. This flapping wing mechanism allows for the measurement of the instantaneous forces on a wing for a particular kinematics, by driving the wing with dynamically similar kinematics in a tank of oil. These experiments will be used in the future to analyze and optimize the lift generated by flapping-wing MAVs.

Several prototype microwave rectifier systems were fabricated in microstrip using EEsof(registered) computer aided engineering (CAE) software to assist in their design. Radio frequency (RF) parameters of the rectifiers were measured on a vector network analyzer. RF-to- DC conversion efficiency was measured for several designs and with various circuit loads consisting of lumped elements and DC motors. A peak RF-to-DC conversion efficiency of 33 percent was achieved. MAV antenna designs were investigated by simulating 68 geometries using the GNEC(registered) numerical electromagetics computer program. Two prototype MAVs were assembled, each consisting of microwave rectifier, antenna and a miniature DC motor. It was demonstrated that a 1.8-Watt, 1.3-GHz microwave signal could power the DC motor at free space distance of 30 inches from transmitting antenna to prototype MAV. Greater operating distances are proposed by using higher transmitting power and antenna gain.

The results of these OMI design research efforts are summarized in this style guide, which provides a generic framework for handheld OMI development. Detailed design solutions will be developed using, in part, the criteria provided in this document. The MAV style guide: 1) Identifies assumptions regarding MAV use that may affect design decisions; 2) Defines the essential components of a handheld MAV OMI; 3) Outlines style guidelines common to OMI control elements; 4) Outlines style guidelines common to OMI displays; and 5) Identifies ideal interaction response times for OMI functions. It is assumed that the major components of an OMI will include manual controls and a touch screen with a diagonal dimension of approximately nine inches. However, as new technologies and displays are developed these guidelines may change due to the evolving design and functionality requirements of MAV systems.
