Book excerpt: The extensive usage of Erbium Doped Fiber Amplier (EDFA) in fiber optic networks creates many new configurations and technologies. Conventional optical amplifiers based on EDFA can amplify multiple channels at the same time, but within a single fiber optic core. The amplifier can be made to support multiple fibers, however the channels must be at different set of wavelengths, which is impractical since optical channels are standardized at a specific set of wavelengths. Therefore, the application of optical amplifiers are limited for one fiber core only. As an alternative, a design of an EDFA is hereby proposed. With the amplifier, it will make the network management simpler. It also provides flexibility in optical network design. In this dissertation, the design and development of EDFA is detailed and discussed. The design has made it possible to support two fibers with each one carrying the same set of wavelengths. This is achieved by taking advantage the polarization multiplexing techniques which allow a combination of lights by setting them linear and orthogonally apart. The signals co-exist in a single core EDF by differetiating both of their polarity using polarization controllers. Then it will combine through in a single core using a 3dB coupler. The combined signals are then amplified by the EDFA simultaneously, doubling the amount of signals carried by the same wavelength. The amplifier has been successfully tested at the transmission speed as high as 2.5Gbps. Moderate gain and noise figure od EDFA was achieved at an optimum pump power for the EDF at 40 mW. The transmission performance also shows tolerable polarizatiob crosstalk due to unpolarized amplified spontaneous emission with the bit error rate showing little difference compared to that of the conventional amplifier. The results were obtained mainly through experimentation while others are through software simulation.

Book excerpt: Increased demand for larger bandwidth and longer inter-amplifiers distances translates to higher power budgets for fiber optic communication systems in order to overcome large splitting losses and achieve acceptable signal-to-noise ratios. Due to their unique design ytterbium sensitized erbium doped, double clad fiber amplifiers; offer significant increase in the output powers that can be obtained. In this thesis we investigate, a one-stage, high power erbium and ytterbium co-doped double clad fiber amplifier (DCFA) with output power of 1.4W, designed and built in our lab. Experimental demonstration and numerical simulation techniques have been used to systematically study the applications of such an amplifier and the effects of incorporating it in various fiber optic communication systems. Amplitude modulated subcarrier multiplexed (AM-SCM) CATV distribution experiment has been performed to verify the feasibility of using this amplifier in an analog/digital communication system. The applications of the amplifier as a Fabry-Perot and ring fiber laser with an all-fiber cavity, a broadband supercontinuum source and for generation of high power, short pulses at 5GHz have been experimentally demonstrated. A variety of observable nonlinear effects occur due to the high intensity of the optical powers confined in micron-sized cores of the fibers, this thesis explores in detail some of these effects caused by using the high power Er/Yb double clad fiber amplifier. A fiber optic based analog/digital CATV system experiences composite second order (CSO) distortion due to the interaction between the gain tilt—the variation of gain with wavelength, of the doped fiber amplifier and the wavelength chirp of the directly modulated semiconductor laser. Gain tilt of the Er/Yb co-doped fiber amplifier has been experimentally measured and its contribution to the CSO of the system calculated. Theoretical analysis of a wavelength division multiplexed system with closely spaced channels has been carried out to show that crosstalk can occur due to the four-wave mixing products generated inside the high power Er/Yb DCFA. A model for parametric amplification due to four-wave mixing has been developed and used to analyze its application for short pulse generation and high speed optical time division multiplexing.

Book excerpt: Various aspects concerning Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFA) for use in C-band transmission system were investigated through experimental work culminating in the design and implementation of three different C-band EDF A's. The most promising being an EDF A utilizing double pass with tunable bandpass filter (TBF) amplification scheh,e. The configuration is a new approach to increase the sensitivity of the preamplifier before the signal is received by the receiver. This is because, limited sensitivity preamplifiers offered in the markets that limit the fiber optic link design. Thus, a new approach is desirable in solving the problem. In this thesis, new technique is proposed to increase the sensitivity up to IOdB. STM-I and STM-4 Bit Error Rate (BER) test on SDH network was successfully conducted in a laboratory environment. The test showed that no error was introduced. Finally it is concluded that DPEDFA is reliable to be used as a device to realize high sensitivity preamplifier, as its realization would result in a huge increase in additional power budget with minimum installation and maintenance complexity and cost.

Book excerpt: Optical amplifiers have a great impact on optical communications due to their ability to amplify light along the optical path. Thus optical amplifiers have become indispensable components in high-performance optical communication links. However, while optical amplifiers are effective in mitigating link power loss problems, they are conventionally unusable and irrelevant for another major fiber optic transmission which is dispersion. Compensation of dispersion is a necessity in high speed and/or long distance links. This is separately achieved by use of a dispersion compensator which is either of fiber optics based or fiber Bragg grating based. Thus there is clear need for an integrated system which can achieve both important functions at the same time. New designs have been envisaged and achieved in this thesis. It has shown a great enhancement in performing simultaneous function in amplifying the power as well as compensating the dispersion of the signal (Hybrid). The double-pass erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) with embedded chirped fiber Brag grating and as well as other filtering technique (optical Bragg grating) have been demonstrated and investigated. It is shown through simulations and by the hardware implementation that the new design is significantly better than that of existing double pass amplifier and double pass amplifier with tunable filter. There are two levels of tests carried out in this study; device level and system (transmission) level. At the device level, the performance parameters of the new configurations are thoroughly characterized showing improvement in gain, noise figure, and the output power, considering the effects of pump power, input signal level, and input signal wavelength. The device configuration is based on double-pass amplification with a Bragg grating employed as the reflector. The grating also serves as a filter suppressing the Amplified Spontaneous Noise from the signal. At the system level, the performance parameters investigated are power sensitivity, power penalty, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), eye amplitude, eye opening and jitter which all see a level of improvements, based on Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) system. A gain as high as 53.4dB, a noise figure of as low as 5.36dB, and sensitivity of -40dBm have been achieved at the BER of 10-12 for the transmission speed of 2.5Gbps. The new hybrid amplifier provides power gain improvement of 12.5 dB and 8.4 dB for single and multi channel system. The power penalty incurred by the new hybrid amplifier for single and multi channel system are 3.5 dB and 3.2 dB respectively. Comparisons are made against the conventional double pass amplifiers and back-to-back connection.

Book excerpt: In the point-to-point transmission an optical signal suffers mainly from attenuation and dispersion. The ongoing research has been focusing on containing this issue by proposing innovative designs in order to provide for an element compensating these effects. This research work focuses on the development of a new design of wide band high concentration optical amplifier. It suggests compensating for attenuation and dispersion both using the same technique. It consists of two stages of 1.5m and 9m long Erbium-Doped Fiber (EDF) optimized to operate in C-band and L-band, respectively. Further, a Chirped Fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) is used in each section to reflect the amplified signal back to the active area so that the overall gain spectrum can be enhanced over a wider frequency spectrum. Using a semi-analytical model (GainMaster), is suggested to verify the proposed design. A numerical model is carried out to implement the energy rate equations for the erbium ions population inversions. In addition, an extensive work has been carried out to implement this design experimentally. The experimental results show that the proposed amplifier gives a wider (1540nm to 1610m) flat high gain (22dB) with variation of ±3dB and low noise figure less than (6.5dB) at low input signal power (-30dBm) . Though solved by CFBG partially, this work has not carried out a quantified exploration of issues related to dispersion, mainly due to unavailability properly characterized equipment. Also an extensive work has been carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed amplifier by comparing the performance against other available amplifiers. The performance shows that the band width 5nm higher than the existing amplifier with low noise figure about 7dB and gain flatness about 70nm which is higher than the other two amplifiers by 30dm.
