Book excerpt: This thesis presents the research work that was carried out on the development, characterization and analysis of broadband Erbium doped silica fiber amplifier (B-EDF). Erbium doped fiber amplifiers provide advantages over regenerative repeaters as well as other amplification systems. For example, better crosstalk characteristics, higher power operation, lower insertion loss than semiconductor laser amplifiers, higher efficiency than Raman amplifiers and low noise figure than Brilloun amplifiers. In addition, EDFAs are the only amplifier, that can be used as both distributed and lumped amplifier in telecommunications. Currently, optical communication technology is moving from point-to-point sys- terns to optical networking. The exponential growth in data communications and the internet places urgent demands on high-capacity communication networks. To increase the total capacity, amplifier bandwidth has commanded much attention. However, the spread and expansion of dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems are keeping pace with various technology developments of optical amplifiers and, in particular, the bandwidth broadening of EDFAs. For this thesis, a novel EDF A structure is developed to increase the amplifier bandwidth by combining the conventional band and long wavelength band (C+L). This will offer more efficient use of optical fiber networks and it will satisfy the demand of higher transmission capacity. The design and development of EDFAs is viewed particularly from engineering perspective through double pass technique. Single pass and double pass silica based Erbium doped fiber amplifier, (SP-EDFA, DP-EDFA) have been discussed in this thesis. The performance of both systems is compared and presented thoroughly. There are two-approaches used in this thesis: simulation and experiment work. Simulation is designed to check and optimize the design parameters of the amplifier. Efforts, costs and time can be saved through software simulation process, which are the benefits that make the simulation as an absolute option in the amplifier design. Experiment is implemented after the optimization stage with both, SP-EDFA and DP-EDFA, systems. As a conclusion, results of both approaches will be presented in this thesis. A bandwidth amplification of90nm is obtained through a double pass technique. This bandwidth can support more than 100 WDM channels with standard channel spacing of 100 Gbps. All analysis and discussion will be presented.

Book excerpt: Various aspects concerning Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFA) for use in C-band transmission system were investigated through experimental work culminating in the design and implementation of three different C-band EDF A's. The most promising being an EDF A utilizing double pass with tunable bandpass filter (TBF) amplification scheh,e. The configuration is a new approach to increase the sensitivity of the preamplifier before the signal is received by the receiver. This is because, limited sensitivity preamplifiers offered in the markets that limit the fiber optic link design. Thus, a new approach is desirable in solving the problem. In this thesis, new technique is proposed to increase the sensitivity up to IOdB. STM-I and STM-4 Bit Error Rate (BER) test on SDH network was successfully conducted in a laboratory environment. The test showed that no error was introduced. Finally it is concluded that DPEDFA is reliable to be used as a device to realize high sensitivity preamplifier, as its realization would result in a huge increase in additional power budget with minimum installation and maintenance complexity and cost.

Book excerpt: In the point-to-point transmission an optical signal suffers mainly from attenuation and dispersion. The ongoing research has been focusing on containing this issue by proposing innovative designs in order to provide for an element compensating these effects. This research work focuses on the development of a new design of wide band high concentration optical amplifier. It suggests compensating for attenuation and dispersion both using the same technique. It consists of two stages of 1.5m and 9m long Erbium-Doped Fiber (EDF) optimized to operate in C-band and L-band, respectively. Further, a Chirped Fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) is used in each section to reflect the amplified signal back to the active area so that the overall gain spectrum can be enhanced over a wider frequency spectrum. Using a semi-analytical model (GainMaster), is suggested to verify the proposed design. A numerical model is carried out to implement the energy rate equations for the erbium ions population inversions. In addition, an extensive work has been carried out to implement this design experimentally. The experimental results show that the proposed amplifier gives a wider (1540nm to 1610m) flat high gain (22dB) with variation of ±3dB and low noise figure less than (6.5dB) at low input signal power (-30dBm) . Though solved by CFBG partially, this work has not carried out a quantified exploration of issues related to dispersion, mainly due to unavailability properly characterized equipment. Also an extensive work has been carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed amplifier by comparing the performance against other available amplifiers. The performance shows that the band width 5nm higher than the existing amplifier with low noise figure about 7dB and gain flatness about 70nm which is higher than the other two amplifiers by 30dm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiber optica technology is not entirely perfect, even with its amazing capabilities. As the transmissions cover larger distances, signal lost occurs and amplication is required. Hence, to transmit information over longer distances, the optical signals need to be boosted. The conventional method of boosting these signals is by using the electrical repeaters. The concept of electrical repeaters may sound attractive, but it poses several problems. This is because repeaters can only work at specific rate, wavelength and modulation format. The need for optical amplifiers has arisen because the repeaters concept delays the transmission and may introduce noise in the signal. Optical signals require amplification at different points on communications links. There are three types of amplifiers located along this link. The first type is the power amplifiers that are placed directly after the optical transmitter. Secondly, there are the in-line amplifiers that operate with a signal in the middle of a fiber-optic link and lastly, the pre amplifiers, which magnify the signal before it reaches the receiver. In this research, the design and development of optical amplifiers focused only on in-line amplifiers. Among the variety of optical amplifiers, Erbium doped fiber amplifiers were chosen as the optical amplifiers becuase erbium is the most efficient active medium that allows optical signals to be transmitted over very long distances without the need for signal regeneration. In this thesis, the hands-on experiments of the in-line optical amplifiers design were carried out. The design models comprised single and double stages of Erbium doped fiber amplifiers setups. At the single stage device level, testing was conducted to study the effects of the design parameters that are pump power, Erbium doped fiber length, signal wavelength and input power. The analysis on the double stage Erbium doped fiber amplifier was carried out for the device level testing based on the effects of the performance parameters i.e., gain, output power, noise figure and Amplified Spontaneos Emission level with the inclusion of tunable band pass filter. The results showed that the double stage amplifiers had a greater advantage compared to the single stage. the double stage Erbium doped fiber amplifiers with tunable band pass filter and the utilization of the backward pumping scheme had increased the gain more than that with the forward pumping scheme. The noise problem created in the Erbium doped fiber amplifiers was the main source that contributed to the high Amplified Spontaneous Emission. The concatenated chain caused the Amplified Spontaneous Emission to accumulate. Hence, inserting a tunable band pass filter in the design reduced the noise figure. Varying the parameters and selecting the suitable setup can improve the performance of the in-line amplifier system. The results of the study showed the most suitable design setup is the double stage Erbium doped fiber amplifiers, which increases the gain but reduce the noise level.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extensive usage of Erbium Doped Fiber Amplier (EDFA) in fiber optic networks creates many new configurations and technologies. Conventional optical amplifiers based on EDFA can amplify multiple channels at the same time, but within a single fiber optic core. The amplifier can be made to support multiple fibers, however the channels must be at different set of wavelengths, which is impractical since optical channels are standardized at a specific set of wavelengths. Therefore, the application of optical amplifiers are limited for one fiber core only. As an alternative, a design of an EDFA is hereby proposed. With the amplifier, it will make the network management simpler. It also provides flexibility in optical network design. In this dissertation, the design and development of EDFA is detailed and discussed. The design has made it possible to support two fibers with each one carrying the same set of wavelengths. This is achieved by taking advantage the polarization multiplexing techniques which allow a combination of lights by setting them linear and orthogonally apart. The signals co-exist in a single core EDF by differetiating both of their polarity using polarization controllers. Then it will combine through in a single core using a 3dB coupler. The combined signals are then amplified by the EDFA simultaneously, doubling the amount of signals carried by the same wavelength. The amplifier has been successfully tested at the transmission speed as high as 2.5Gbps. Moderate gain and noise figure od EDFA was achieved at an optimum pump power for the EDF at 40 mW. The transmission performance also shows tolerable polarizatiob crosstalk due to unpolarized amplified spontaneous emission with the bit error rate showing little difference compared to that of the conventional amplifier. The results were obtained mainly through experimentation while others are through software simulation.

Book excerpt: Increased demand for larger bandwidth and longer inter-amplifiers distances translates to higher power budgets for fiber optic communication systems in order to overcome large splitting losses and achieve acceptable signal-to-noise ratios. Due to their unique design ytterbium sensitized erbium doped, double clad fiber amplifiers; offer significant increase in the output powers that can be obtained. In this thesis we investigate, a one-stage, high power erbium and ytterbium co-doped double clad fiber amplifier (DCFA) with output power of 1.4W, designed and built in our lab. Experimental demonstration and numerical simulation techniques have been used to systematically study the applications of such an amplifier and the effects of incorporating it in various fiber optic communication systems. Amplitude modulated subcarrier multiplexed (AM-SCM) CATV distribution experiment has been performed to verify the feasibility of using this amplifier in an analog/digital communication system. The applications of the amplifier as a Fabry-Perot and ring fiber laser with an all-fiber cavity, a broadband supercontinuum source and for generation of high power, short pulses at 5GHz have been experimentally demonstrated. A variety of observable nonlinear effects occur due to the high intensity of the optical powers confined in micron-sized cores of the fibers, this thesis explores in detail some of these effects caused by using the high power Er/Yb double clad fiber amplifier. A fiber optic based analog/digital CATV system experiences composite second order (CSO) distortion due to the interaction between the gain tilt—the variation of gain with wavelength, of the doped fiber amplifier and the wavelength chirp of the directly modulated semiconductor laser. Gain tilt of the Er/Yb co-doped fiber amplifier has been experimentally measured and its contribution to the CSO of the system calculated. Theoretical analysis of a wavelength division multiplexed system with closely spaced channels has been carried out to show that crosstalk can occur due to the four-wave mixing products generated inside the high power Er/Yb DCFA. A model for parametric amplification due to four-wave mixing has been developed and used to analyze its application for short pulse generation and high speed optical time division multiplexing.

Book excerpt: Erbium fiber amplifiers are entering a fourth year of development with six commercial offerings now available, the result of rapid improvements in pump lasers, wavelength division multiplexers, isolators and doped fiber designs. A number of challenges remain however to improve the performance and ensure reliability in field applications. Improvements in the rare earth doped fiber, itself, remain a challenge. Rare earth doped fiber fabrication has been dominated by variations on traditional low loss telecommunications fiber using GeO 2, Al 2 0 3, and P 2 0 5 co- dopants yielding fiber which is fusion splice compatible with telecommunications fiber 1. It has long been realized that alternate host compositions may improve the efficiency and gain-bandwidth products at the expense of compatibility with telecommunications fiber. Host materials of compound glasses, phosphates, fluorophosphates and others have recently been reported 2,3,4,5. The incorporation of Ca in a GO2-Al2O3-SiO2 or Al 2 0 3 -SiO 2 host has, for example, also been shown to improve the efficiency of 813 nm pumping 3.
