Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is the object of this thesis to give an account of the considerations necessary to design, construct, and operate a shock tube facility. The primary purpose of the facility was to provide a means to study high strength shock waves in physics, chemistry, and aerodynamic applications. Preliminary designs were undertaken to determine the basic dimensions and related capabilities. Final design, construction and testing of the tube itself was performed by Nooter Corporation in St. Louis, Missouri. Preliminary designs agreed rather closely with final construction. Experimental testing was confined to the successful operation of all the various components of the facility"--Abstract, leaf ii.

Roll and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of the shock tube to laboratory astrophysical studies is discussed, with particular regard to the experimental determination of atomic and molecular transition probabilities. The construction of a two-inch stainless-steel shock tube and its associated mechanical and electronic equipment is described. The measurement of the pressure and velocity history of the gas flow as well as radiation measurements behind the reflected shock are discussed. A comparison of hydrodynamic observations with theoretically derived values indicates that, for the McMillin shock tube, there are deviations from accepted shock-tube behavior. Excitation temperatures computed using the emission lines of neutral iron, are found to be very much lower than can be accounted for by present shock-tube theories. (Author).
Book Synopsis An Electromagnetic Shock Tube for Aerodynamic Research by : Richard W. Ziemer
Download or read book An Electromagnetic Shock Tube for Aerodynamic Research written by Richard W. Ziemer and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An electromagnetically driven shock tube was studied as a possible new tool for aerodynamic research in which velocities of up to 41,000 feet per second are obtainable in air. At these high velocities stagnation temperatures of about 35,000K are produced. The simple construction and operation of the shock tube is described and an evaluation is made of its performance. The potentialities and limitations of the apparatus are discussed with regards to research applications. The results of some magnetoaerodynamic studies are presented to show the usefulness of this type of shock tube. (Author).

Download or read book Plasma Studies in a Shock Tube written by John W. Daiber and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air plasmas produced by shock waves were studied in the temperature range extending from 3000 K to 5000 K at densities ranging from 0.005 to 0.015 that of standard air density. Microwave reflection measurements from these plasmas have been made at frequencies of 3320 and 9375 mc. A major aim of the reflection measurements was to determine whether or not polarization forces on the electron are important. The present results indicate that the Sellmeier theory, in which the polarization forces are assumed to be negligible, is the proper theory for relating electron concentrations and cross sections with macroscopic electrical parameters. In addition, the collision frequencies of electrons in air were found to agree closely with those reported by Lamb and Lin. The data also provided an estimate of the relaxation time for electron formation. (Author).
