Book Synopsis Effective Options Regarding Spay or Neuter of Dogs by : Lynette Arnason Hart
Download or read book Effective Options Regarding Spay or Neuter of Dogs written by Lynette Arnason Hart and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-07-12 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, spay or neuter of dogs, including early-age spay-neuter, has become a common practice in the United States, intended primarily to reduce overpopulation and therefore relinquishment of dogs to animal shelters and humane societies. Neutering dogs prior to adoption is even, in some localities, a legal requirement. However, recent research has called into question the common wisdom of mandatory and indiscriminate spay-neuter. An important welfare issue is that for some canine breeds, neutering is associated with heightened levels of musculoskeletal disorders and/or certain cancers, while for others no adverse effects of neuter status on diseases are evident. Adverse consequences of early neutering can be particularly troubling for the breeds most often used in working or assistance roles, shortening the working lives of these extensively trained dogs, e.g., Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, and German Shepherds. It must also be considered that, in many countries outside of the United States, dog populations are not routinely sterilized and, in some cases, maintain low rates of dog relinquishment. In other cases, where street dog populations are prevalent, results of long-term sterilization program are mixed as to their success in preventing or reducing street dog populations. It is clear that reproduction is not the sole cause of dog relinquishment, and that an outsized focus on sterilization can inhibit efforts to protect animals and, in some cases, be harmful to them. These issues raise questions regarding legal implications, adoption, and methods of controlling reproduction. This Research Topic seeks to provide a scholarly forum addressing the numerous contexts and complexities, including cultural and legal issues related to spay and neuter of dogs. collapse

Book Synopsis Who's a Good Dog? by : Jessica Pierce
Download or read book Who's a Good Dog? written by Jessica Pierce and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2023-09-05 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to cultivating a shared life of joy and respect with our dogs. Who’s a Good Dog? is an invitation to nurture more thoughtful and balanced relationships with our canine companions. By deepening our curiosity about what our dogs are experiencing, and by working together with them in a spirit of collaboration, we can become more effective and compassionate caregivers. With sympathy for the challenges met by both dogs and their humans, bioethicist Jessica Pierce explores common practices of caring for dogs, including how we provide exercise, what we feed, how and why we socialize and train, and how we employ tools such as collars and leashes. She helps us both to identify potential sources of fear and anxiety in our dogs’ lives and to expand practices that provide physical and emotional nourishment. Who’s a Good Dog? also encourages us to think more critically about what we expect of our dogs and how these expectations can set everyone up for success or failure. Pierce offers resources to help us cultivate attentiveness and kindness, inspiring us to practice the art of noticing, of astonishment, of looking with fresh eyes at these beings we think we know so well. And more than this, she makes her findings relatable by examining facets of her relationship with Bella, the dog in her life. As Bella shows throughout, all dogs are good dogs, and we, as humans and dog guardians, could be doing a little bit better to get along with them and give them what they need.

Book Synopsis Constructing Canine Consent by : Erin Jones
Download or read book Constructing Canine Consent written by Erin Jones and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-03-12 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of canine consent is far more than simply a buzzword in modern dog training practices. In its current form, consent is a distinctly human concept, designed by humans and for humans. Looking beyond species boundaries can help us not only consider concepts of canine consent and autonomy, but it can also help us to apply these concepts in our everyday interactions with dogs, which is fundamental for any professional working with dogs as well as for everyday dog caregivers. This canine-indexed definition of consent includes a model of five major categories: Touch/interaction-based consent, cooperative care using learned consent behaviours, activity consent, consent-based learning, and substitutive consent. These categories involve a two-way communication system, integration of salient choices, teaching consent behaviours and incorporating existing training protocols that adhere to the Humane Hierarchy of best practices, and an evaluation of dependent decision-making in extenuating circumstances. This book aims to merge the existing literature and new understandings about canine consent to paint a complete picture. It will challenge the current expectations of dogs and dog behaviour in our society with an intention of considering their perspectives, experiences, and emotional needs. It will be important reading for veterinary professionals, dog trainers and behaviourists, those involved in work with therapy dogs, and anybody working with or caring for dogs.

Book Synopsis Playing the Race Card by : Linda Williams
Download or read book Playing the Race Card written by Linda Williams and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The black man suffering at the hands of whites, the white woman sexually threatened by the black man. Both images have long been burned into the American conscience through popular entertainment, and today they exert a powerful and disturbing influence on Americans' understanding of race. So argues Linda Williams in this boldly inquisitive book, where she probes the bitterly divisive racial sentiments aroused by such recent events as O. J. Simpson's criminal trial. Williams, the author of Hard Core, explores how these images took root, beginning with melodramatic theater, where suffering characters acquire virtue through victimization. The racial sympathies and hostilities that surfaced during the trial of the police in the beating of Rodney King and in the O. J. Simpson murder trial are grounded in the melodramatic forms of Uncle Tom's Cabin and The Birth of a Nation. Williams finds that Stowe's beaten black man and Griffith's endangered white woman appear repeatedly throughout popular entertainment, promoting interracial understanding at one moment, interracial hate at another. The black and white racial melodrama has galvanized emotions and fueled the importance of new media forms, such as serious, "integrated" musicals of stage and film, including The Jazz Singer and Show Boat. It also helped create a major event out of the movie Gone With the Wind, while enabling television to assume new moral purpose with the broadcast of Roots. Williams demonstrates how such developments converged to make the televised race trial a form of national entertainment. When prosecutor Christopher Darden accused Simpson's defense team of "playing the race card," which ultimately trumped his own team's gender card, he feared that the jury's sympathy for a targeted black man would be at the expense of the abused white wife. The jury's verdict, Williams concludes, was determined not so much by facts as by the cultural forces of racial melodrama long in the making. Revealing melodrama to be a key element in American culture, Williams argues that the race images it has promoted are deeply ingrained in our minds and that there can be no honest discussion about race until Americans recognize this predicament.
