Book excerpt: Part I of the Selected Works of L.V.Kantorovich is devoted to his mathematical work, with particular emphasis on the contribution he made to set theory and methods of mathematical approximation. The book begins with some chapters on the Descriptive Theory of Sets and Real Functions. Topics include universal functions, W.H. Young's classification, generalized derivatives of continuous functions and the H. Steinhaus problem. The book also includes papers on functional analysis in semi-ordered vector spaces, as well as articles relevant to the extension of Hilbert space in the spirit of distribution theory. This indispensable reference provides a record of the achievements of a man whose originality and diversity of thought distinguished him as a remarkable mathematician. Kantorovich was a true polymath, whose mathematical work had applications across a very broad field of subjects, particularly economics. This book will prove to be a useful reference work for anyone interested in learning about the origin of a number of important mathematical ideas. Part II of this set contains his works on Functional Analysis. The author deals with a number of approximate calculations and solutions including a discussion of an approximate calculation of certain types of definite integrals, and also a method for the approximate solution of partial differential equations. In addition to this, the author looks at various other methods, including the Ritz method, the Galerkin method in relation to the reduction of differential equations, and the Newton method for functional equations. Towards the end of the book there are several chapters on computers-a very early insight into what proved to be a development of enormous importance in the later half of the 20th century. Kantorovich is often said to be the founding father of mathematical programming. His ideas of the 1930s, which could never to come to fruition in Stalin's Soviet Union, were later developed by other scientists, and have had a considerable impact on the world, particularly in the field of economics. This book will appeal to anyone seeking further insight into the works of this great mathematician.

Book excerpt: "Descriptive Topology in Selected Topics of Functional Analysis" is a collection of recent developments in the field of descriptive topology, specifically focused on the classes of infinite-dimensional topological vector spaces that appear in functional analysis. Such spaces include Fréchet spaces, (LF)-spaces and their duals, and the space of continuous real-valued functions C(X) on a completely regular Hausdorff space X, to name a few. These vector spaces appear in functional analysis in distribution theory, differential equations, complex analysis, and various other analytical settings. This monograph provides new insights into the connections between the topological properties of linear function spaces and their applications in functional analysis.

It has been completely rewritten, mostly by Phillips, and much has been added while keeping the existing framework. Thus, the algebraic tools play a major role, and are introduced early, leading to a more satisfactory operational calculus and spectral theory. The Laplace-Stieltjes transform methods, used by Hille, have not been replaced but rather supplemented by the new tools. - Foreword.

This volume contains some of the most important papers by this renowned geometer and hence, some of his most influential ideas. Alexandrov addressed a wide range of modern mathematical problems, and he did so with intelligence and elegance, solving some of the discipline's most difficult and enduring challenges. He was the first to apply many of the tools and methods of the theory of real functions and functional analysis that are now current in geometry. The topics here include convex polyhedrons and closed surfaces, an elementary proof and extension of Minkowski's theorem, Riemannian geometry and a method for Dirichlet problems. This monograph, published in English for the first time, gives unparalleled access to a brilliant mind, and advanced students and researchers in applied mathematics and geometry will find it indispensable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF MATHEMATICS aims to be a reference work for all parts of mathe matics. It is a translation with updates and editorial comments of the Soviet Mathematical Encyclopaedia published by 'Soviet Encyclopaedia Publishing House' in five volumes in 1977-1985. The annotated translation consists of ten volumes including a special index volume. There are three kinds of articles in this ENCYCLOPAEDIA. First of all there are survey-type articles dealing with the various main directions in mathematics (where a rather fine subdivi sion has been used). The main requirement for these articles has been that they should give a reasonably complete up-to-date account of the current state of affairs in these areas and that they should be maximally accessible. On the whole, these articles should be understandable to mathematics students in their first specialization years, to graduates from other mathematical areas and, depending on the specific subject, to specialists in other domains of science, en gineers and teachers of mathematics. These articles treat their material at a fairly general level and aim to give an idea of the kind of problems, techniques and concepts involved in the area in question. They also contain background and motivation rather than precise statements of precise theorems with detailed definitions and technical details on how to carry out proofs and constructions. The second kind of article, of medium length, contains more detailed concrete problems, results and techniques.

This book was released on 2012-10-30 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An asymmetric norm is a positive definite sublinear functional p on a real vector space X. The topology generated by the asymmetric norm p is translation invariant so that the addition is continuous, but the asymmetry of the norm implies that the multiplication by scalars is continuous only when restricted to non-negative entries in the first argument. The asymmetric dual of X, meaning the set of all real-valued upper semi-continuous linear functionals on X, is merely a convex cone in the vector space of all linear functionals on X. In spite of these differences, many results from classical functional analysis have their counterparts in the asymmetric case, by taking care of the interplay between the asymmetric norm p and its conjugate. Among the positive results one can mention: Hahn–Banach type theorems and separation results for convex sets, Krein–Milman type theorems, analogs of the fundamental principles – open mapping, closed graph and uniform boundedness theorems – an analog of the Schauder’s theorem on the compactness of the conjugate mapping. Applications are given to best approximation problems and, as relevant examples, one considers normed lattices equipped with asymmetric norms and spaces of semi-Lipschitz functions on quasi-metric spaces. Since the basic topological tools come from quasi-metric spaces and quasi-uniform spaces, the first chapter of the book contains a detailed presentation of some basic results from the theory of these spaces. The focus is on results which are most used in functional analysis – completeness, compactness and Baire category – which drastically differ from those in metric or uniform spaces. The book is fairly self-contained, the prerequisites being the acquaintance with the basic results in topology and functional analysis, so it may be used for an introduction to the subject. Since new results, in the focus of current research, are also included, researchers in the area can use it as a reference text.

Book excerpt: to the English Translation This is a concise guide to basic sections of modern functional analysis. Included are such topics as the principles of Banach and Hilbert spaces, the theory of multinormed and uniform spaces, the Riesz-Dunford holomorphic functional calculus, the Fredholm index theory, convex analysis and duality theory for locally convex spaces. With standard provisos the presentation is self-contained, exposing about a h- dred famous "named" theorems furnished with complete proofs and culminating in the Gelfand-Nalmark-Segal construction for C*-algebras. The first Russian edition was printed by the Siberian Division of "Nauka" P- lishers in 1983. Since then the monograph has served as the standard textbook on functional analysis at the University of Novosibirsk. This volume is translated from the second Russian edition printed by the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics of the Siberian Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences· in 1995. It incorporates new sections on Radon measures, the Schwartz spaces of distributions, and a supplementary list of theoretical exercises and problems. This edition was typeset using AMS-'lEX, the American Mathematical Society's 'lEX system. To clear my conscience completely, I also confess that := stands for the definor, the assignment operator, signifies the end of the proof.
