Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Handbook to Juvenile Literature It is apparent, even in the case of persons of mature years who have access to a varied collection of literature, that it is no easy matter to map out a definite course of reading without some guidance. It is much more obvious, then, that this need of suitable direction applies to a far greater extent where children are concerned. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of English Prose Fiction and Juvenile Books in the Chicago Public Library Books especially suitable for young people are indicated by the case letter H. Under the author's name are given the titles of his or her books in alphabetical order, except in the case of series, which are arranged as the books should be read. Contents of volumes of short stories are given under the author's name. Works having a historical basis, and descriptive novels, are so indicated by a note appended to the title under the author's name only. When this information forms no part of the title it is enclosed in brackets. Titles are entered under the first word not an article, and also under an important, or catch-word, when such occurs in a title, followed by the author's surname. For the benefit of those who wish to plan a systematic course of reading in fic tion, the list of bibliographical aids which follows has been compiled. Many of the books mentioned in this list, especially the catalogues of fiction in various libraries, have been freely used in the preparation of this catalogue. The titles of all new accessions to the library, since January 1, 1898, will be found on the bulletin boards in the Delivery Room, in the quarterly bulletins, and in the public card catalogue. Book excerpt: The magic and wonder of winter’s first snowfall is perfectly captured in Ezra Jack Keat’s Caldecott Medal-winning picture book. Young readers can enjoy this celebrated classic as a full-sized board book, perfect for read-alouds of all kinds and a great gift for the holiday season. In 1962, a little boy named Peter put on his snowsuit and stepped out of his house and into the hearts of millions of readers. Universal in its appeal, this story beautifully depicts a child's wonder at a new world, and the hope of capturing and keeping that wonder forever. This big, sturdy edition will bring even more young readers to the story of Peter and his adventures in the snow. Ezra Jack Keats was also the creator of such classics as Goggles, A Letter to Amy, Pet Show!, Peter’s Chair, and A Whistle for Willie. (This book is also available in Spanish, as Un dia de nieve.) Praise for The Snowy Day: “Keats made Peter’s world so inviting that it beckons us. Perhaps the busyness of daily life in the 21st century makes us appreciate Peter even more—a kid who has the luxury of a whole day to just be outside, surrounded by snow that’s begging to be enjoyed.” —The Atlantic "Ezra Jack Keats's classic The Snowy Day, winner of the 1963 Caldecott Medal, pays homage to the wonder and pure pleasure a child experiences when the world is blanketed in snow."—Publisher's Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stepping Stones to Literature: A Second Reader HE lessons contained in this book are a product of experience in the schoolroom. They go forth in the hope of rendering some service to teachers and to children alike. Throughout the work, the child's point of view has been kept in mind as well as the teacher's; and the aim has been to prepare, first of all, a book which children will like to read. Every lesson centers about something in which children are interested. All teachers know that the labor of teaching is lessened when the interest of the pupils is assured. The name of the Series testifies to another aim of the book, - to lead to a love of literature. Many of the stories and poems herein contained will be found again and again by the children in the world's best books. A taste for good things, developed now, will lead the pupils to demand good things when free to choose. The value of these lessons will be greatly enhanced if the teacher reads to the children, in connection with the lessons, such selections as are suggested by the text. Many of Long fellow's poems, for example, should be read, and some should be committed to memory, after the lesson on Longfellow. It is hoped that many of the poems will be memorized as well as read by the children. Thus the words, as well as the thought, become their possession. Nearly every lesson suggests language lessons, which the skillful teacher will readily plan in connection with the reading. For example, a study of the turtle would naturally follow the lesson on Jack and Joe. The pictures, as well as the lessons, have been carefully prepared or selected with reference to accepted standards and to the children's tastes. They should be studied until some appreciation of their meaning is gained. Artists' names should become as familiar to the children as are the names of poets. Many forms of study have been indicated. The word study should demand thought, and result in added power to do in dependent work. The language lessons, rhyming exercises, and questions will help to form the habit of study. Attention is called to the script lessons, which present beautiful forms, as well as beautiful thoughts, for copying. They thus possess a double advantage for seat work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Reader for the Sixth Grade I'r may safely be assumed that children in the sixth and seventh years in school are ready to enter upon a more' serious study of the best literature. The earlier Readers of this series contain many selections from the familiar classics of all ages. In the upper Readers the average pupil may now enjoy a greater variety of readings from standard authors, representative of wider fields of the world's culture. It should not be forgotten, however, that in any company of children in the elementary schools, there are few who have sufficient intelligence or maturity to study standard literature, as such, continu ously and exclusively. It has been the aim: of the authors, therefore, to present selections having informational and story interest as well as literary value. Combining as they do, then, interesting subject matter with distinction of style, these books will be found of great stimulative use in forming the taste of the pupils and in leading them, by attractive means, to the appreciation of the best in literature. These two Readers are reasonably well supplied with descriptive, scientific, and personal as well as purely imaginative selections. Biography, history, nature, and art have been carefully chosen so as to correlate with the average school curriculum.
