Book Synopsis Land, Water, Language and Politics in Andhra by : Brian Stoddart
Download or read book Land, Water, Language and Politics in Andhra written by Brian Stoddart and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-14 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains how access to and use of land, water and language helped shape Andhra politics in India from 1850 down to the present day. After independence, the debate over land reform and policies on irrigation has shaped the fortunes of various governments, while the debate over the make-up of the language-based state has stimulated separatist movements like the one in support of Telangana. The book discusses how British innovations in irrigation in coastal Andhra in the mid-nineteenth century transformed the economy there from food crops to cash crops, and created new markets for local entrepreneurs. This stimulated increased education and social reform in the region, which in turn supported new politics in search of constitutional concessions. The drive for a Telugu language-based province then arose in concert, and those political resources were then used to determine local patterns down to independence. The 1930s ruse of the socialists, then the communist organisations, was an extension of land and water tax debates, which impacted the political nature of development — both before and after — independence. This is one of the first books on Andhra that recounts this story and is based on extensive archival research exploring the deep relationships between land, water, language and politics. It would be of primary interest to those studying modern nationalism in India, natural resource management, Indian politics and economic growth.
Download or read book The Chaos of Empire written by Jon Wilson and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2016-10-25 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popular image of the British Raj-an era of efficient but officious governors, sycophantic local functionaries, doting amahs, blisteringly hot days and torrid nights-chronicled by Forster and Kipling is a glamorous, nostalgic, but entirely fictitious. In this dramatic revisionist history, Jon Wilson upends the carefully sanitized image of unity, order, and success to reveal an empire rooted far more in violence than in virtue, far more in chaos than in control. Through the lives of administrators, soldiers, and subjects-both British and Indian-The Chaos of Empire traces Britain's imperial rule from the East India Company's first transactions in the 1600s to Indian Independence in 1947. The Raj was the most public demonstration of a state's ability to project power far from home, and its perceived success was used to justify interventions around the world in the years that followed. But the Raj's institutions-from law courts to railway lines-were designed to protect British power without benefiting the people they ruled. This self-serving and careless governance resulted in an impoverished people and a stifled society, not a glorious Indian empire. Jon Wilson's new portrait of a much-mythologized era finally and convincingly proves that the story of benign British triumph was a carefully concocted fiction, here thoroughly and totally debunked.

Book Synopsis Patterns of Labour Migrations in Colonial Andhra by : Kali Chittibabu
Download or read book Patterns of Labour Migrations in Colonial Andhra written by Kali Chittibabu and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of migration is a prime example of a subject that requires the skills and approaches of scholars from several disciplines, such as anthropology, demography, economics, sociology, law, political science, and history. This book explores the importance of historical investigation into migration, which can be traced back to the pre-modern period. It continues to be an important socio-economic phenomenon in most parts of the world, though, more than the internal movement of people, the international angle has captured the global imagination of the scholars interested in migration studies. In India, both migration within the country and to outside the country is distinctly traceable back to the 19th century. In contrast to today’s high figures of internal migration, the India of this period witnessed the mass migration of labourers to overseas territories in the wake of migration of surplus capital, an inevitable result of the Industrial Revolution in the West. Relevant to discussions of internal migration in Andhra is the question of whether the people of this area were normally inclined towards mobility or were averse to it during the period under scrutiny. This book discusses the causes of the comparative immobility of the people of Andhra in relation to the wider high migration trends at the time, including their traditional attachment to their native locale.
