Book Synopsis Refinancing America by : Sheldon D. Pollack
Download or read book Refinancing America written by Sheldon D. Pollack and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating account of the long history of antitax sentiments within the Republican party, Refinancing America looks at how opposition to income and wealth taxation became the dominant factor influencing the party's political agenda. The countless proposals for tax cuts introduced by Republicans in Congress during the 1990s, as well as the Bush administration's $1.6 trillion tax cut in May 2001, were not aberrations, but rather the continuation of a long tradition of hostility to taxation. Nevertheless, the rhetoric and devotion to the antitax cause in the 1990s was more pronounced than in the past, and this book explains how this more extreme strain of antitax politics came to dominate the GOP.

Book Synopsis Beyond Economic Efficiency in United States Tax Law by : David A. Brennen
Download or read book Beyond Economic Efficiency in United States Tax Law written by David A. Brennen and published by Aspen Publishing. This book was released on 2014-12-09 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of unconventional voices, BEYOND ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY IN UNITED STATES TAX LAW articulates alternative approaches to traditional economic analysis that provide a fuller understanding of tax law. Twelve original essays shed new light on classical tax theory by demonstrating that efficiency should not be the sole mechanism for examining the merits of the U.S. tax system. Factors such as race, gender, ethics, fairness, social justice, and political theory, to name a few should play a vital role in the design of the tax system. Reliance upon the myth that markets function solely by reference to efficiency concerns can be expected to result in a poorly functioning tax regime. Covering a broad range of topics including healthcare, housing, theories of justice, wealth transfer taxation, taxation as regulation, international taxation, state and local taxation, retirement security, and the charitable tax exemption this trail-blazing anthology scrutinizes the tax code along many neglected lines of analysis, including fairness, redistribution, organizational behavior and hierarchy, and social justice.
Book Synopsis Death and Dollars by : Alicia H. Munnell
Download or read book Death and Dollars written by Alicia H. Munnell and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2004-05-13 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the recent downturn in the stock market, the 1990s boom and the shift to defined contribution plans mean that more individuals will have significant wealth upon retirement. How they use that wealth will determine not only their own well-being, but also the living standards of their children, the resources available to philanthropies, and the level of investment capital in the economy. This volume explores the reasons why people save, how they decide to allocate their wealth once they retire, and how givers select their beneficiaries. It also assesses the extent to which the estate tax and annuitization of retirement wealth affects the amount and nature of wealth transfers. Finally, it looks at the impact of wealth transfers––first on the amount of aggregate saving and capital accumulation, and then on the distribution of wealth among households. Several conclusions emerge. First, gifts and bequests are important; they may account for about half of total wealth in America. Second, rich people make most of the wealth transfers. They are thoughtful about how much they pay in taxes and how they dispose of their wealth. They care about philanthropic causes and view their charitable contributions as more than a way to avoid paying estate taxes. Third, most nonrich people probably have some lexicographic preferences about the disposition of their wealth; they want to ensure they have adequate resources to take care of their own needs, and if money is left over, they would like it to go to their children. Fourth, little support has emerged for the pure altruistic model of bequests. Fifth, institutions matter. In the case of the rich, the estate tax probably reduces saving and increases bequests to charity. In the case of the nonrich, the shift to defined contribution plans will at a minimum mean that they have more wealth in their hands when they die, and therefore they will leave larger accidental bequests. It might also increase their interest in lea
