Book excerpt: Prepared by the Task Committee on the Development of Prestandards for Concentrate Management Case Studies of the Desalination and Water Reuse Technical Committee of the Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater Council of the Environmental and Water Resources Institute of ASCE.Concentrate Management in Desalination: Case Studies, Second Edition, reviews the state-of-the-practice for managing concentrate streams resulting from desalination processes.Concentrate management and disposal in desalination pose environmental and cost concerns--and often determine whether a desalination project is viable, especially for inland communities. This book examines many facets of concentrate management in desalination, including process design and configuration; regulatory setting; environmental, climate change, and sustainability issues; and economic evaluation of projects. Thirteen case studies are offered to demonstrate different techniques for disposing of concentrates associated with the following types of projects: ocean and bays discharge, sanitary sewer or surface water disposal, deep-well injection, zero liquid discharge (ZLD) or near ZLD, and land disposal and/or evaporation ponds.Environmental engineers, water practitioners and managers responsible for the design, operation, research, and evaluation of regional desalination and water reuse facilities will find a wealth of practical information in this updated and expanded edition.
Book Synopsis Desalination by : National Research Council
Download or read book Desalination written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-09-14 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been an exponential increase in desalination capacity both globally and nationally since 1960, fueled in part by growing concern for local water scarcity and made possible to a great extent by a major federal investment for desalination research and development. Traditional sources of supply are increasingly expensive, unavailable, or controversial, but desalination technology offers the potential to substantially reduce water scarcity by converting the almost inexhaustible supply of seawater and the apparently vast quantities of brackish groundwater into new sources of freshwater. Desalination assesses the state of the art in relevant desalination technologies, and factors such as cost and implementation challenges. It also describes reasonable long-term goals for advancing desalination technology, posits recommendations for action and research, estimates the funding necessary to support the proposed research agenda, and identifies appropriate roles for governmental and nongovernmental entities.
Download or read book Desalination written by Jane Kucera and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume to cover desalination in such depth and detail, offering engineers, technicians, and operators full coverage of the applications, economics, and expectations of what will certainly become one of the most important water-related processes on the planet. Covering thermal processes and membrane processes, this is the only volume any engineer working in desalination must have, covering both practical and theoretical issues encountered on a daily basis. Certain to be an important contribution to the water management community.
Book Synopsis Review of the Desalination and Water Purification Technology Roadmap by : National Research Council
Download or read book Review of the Desalination and Water Purification Technology Roadmap written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-04-20 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bureau of Reclamation and Sandia National Laboratories jointly developed the Roadmap to serve as a strategic research pathway for desalination and water purification technologies to meet future water needs. The book recommends that the Roadmap include a sharper focus on the research and technological advancements needed to reach the long-term objectives. The book also suggests that the environmental, economic, and social costs of energy required by increased dependence on desalination be examined. Strategies for implementing the Roadmap initiative are provided.

Book Synopsis Desalination Research Progress by : Daniel J. Delgado
Download or read book Desalination Research Progress written by Daniel J. Delgado and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As freshwater resources continue to decline as the population grows and development activities continue, desalination has taken on a sense of urgency. Desalination refers to any of several processes that remove excess salt and other minerals from water. Desalination may also refer to the removal of salts and minerals more generally, as in soil desalination. This book includes within its scope distillation, membranes, reverse osmosis, electrodialysis, ion exchange, freezing, water purification, and water reuse and wastewater treatment. This new volume examines new research in this frontier field.

Book Synopsis Principles of Desalination by : K Spiegler
Download or read book Principles of Desalination written by K Spiegler and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Desalination focuses on the principles of the developing technology of large-scale desalting. This book presents the principal desalting methods and explores the process of hyperfiltration or reverse osmosis. Comprised of 11 chapters, this book starts with an overview of the water use and the problem of a potential water shortage. This text then discusses the fundamentals of the major desalting methods in use and explores the basic scientific and design principles that underlie the methods. Other chapters consider the method of vapor reheat distillation, which incorporates the liquid–liquid heat exchange principle. This book discusses as well the various aspects of ion exchange and explores the mechanisms in dual-purpose plants producing both distilled water and steam-turbine raised power. The final chapter considers the cost of conventional water supplies. This book is a valuable resource for technologists and scientists. Students in the graduate courses of engineering will also find this book useful.
