Book excerpt: Bürgers »Münchhausen« erschien erstmals (anonym) 1786 als Übersetzung aus dem Englischen. 1785 war in London »Baron Munchhausens Narrative of his Marvellous Travels and Campaigns in Russia« erschienen. Autor war der etwas zwielichtige Rudolf Erich Raspe. Das Werk Raspes ging wiederum auf einen deutschen Text zurück, eine Anfang der 1780er Jahre herausgegebene Sammlung von Anekdoten unter dem Titel Vade Mecum für lustige Leute. Diese Sammlung enthielt 18 Münchhausen-Geschichten eines unbekannten Autors. Raspe hatte die Geschichten nicht nur übersetzt, sondern sie auch durch eine Rahmenhandlungen verbunden und mehrere Seegeschichten hinzugefügt. 1786 erschien eine deutsche Übersetzung des Textes von Raspe, d. h. eine wiederum um einige neue Geschichten vermehrte freie Bearbeitung durch Bürger. Verlagsort war angeblich London. Tatsächlich erschien das Buch bei dem Göttinger Verleger Johann Christian Dieterich. Nachdem binnen kurzer Zeit drei Auflagen vergriffen waren, kam 1788 eine um sieben neue Geschichten erweiterte Ausgabe heraus. Diese Ausgabe letzter Hand (Bürger starb 1794) liegt den modernen Ausgaben zugrunde.
