Book excerpt: This book is an in-depth analysis of the deregulation of the downstream oil sector in Nigeria. The book which uses a multidisciplinary approach x-rayed the cacophony of official reasons given by government to justify its fervent drive towards deregulation even though the requisite macro-economic policies that would make deregulation to flourish were not put in place. The book, contended that, price hikes which appear to be the vogue and the main drive is not analogous with deregulation. The book recommended that, the government should continue to subsidize the cost of petroleum products and that all corrupt elements feeding fat on the subsidy should be sacked.

With the huge amount of money spent by the Federal Government of Nigeria on subsidizing petroleum products into the country is causing economic dislocation. In remedying this malady, this article examines the policy of the government on total deregulation of the downstream sector from the law and economic perspective. Deregulation is a process of allowing the market forces to be the major determinant of petroleum prices. Law and economics otherwise known as the economic analysis of law is best viewed as a social tool that promotes economic efficiency. This article evaluates the economic efficiency of deregulation in light of existing laws and proposed laws coupled with recent social events. This article reveals arguments for and against deregulation but concludes that the adverse effect of deregulation is not ad infinitum but will bring about self-sufficiency and economic buoyancy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: divOver the past six decades federal regulatory agencies have attempted different strategies to regulate the natural gas industry in the United States. All have been unsuccessful, resulting in nationwide gas shortages or massive gas surpluses and costing the nation scores of billions of dollars. In addition, partial deregulation has led the regulatory agency to become more involved in controlling individual transactions among gas producers, distributors, and consumers. In this important book, Paul MacAvoy demonstrates that no affected group has gained from these experiments in public control and that all participants would gain from complete deregulation. Although losses have declined with partial deregulation in recent years, current regulatory practices still limit the growth of supply through the transmission system. MacAvoy’s history of the regulation of natural gas is a cautionary tale for other natural resource or network industries that are regulated or are about to be regulated. /DIV

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nigerian state has been oil-rich for decades, and yet perennially incapable of converting its oil resources into wealth for ordinary Nigerians. Adeoye O. Akinola tackles this “vexed” oil question by examining the political economy of efforts to deregulate the Nigerian downstream oil industry. Focusing on themes of globalization and democratization, this book considers how a resource-rich developing country like Nigeria can exploit the opportunities of globalization and navigate the pressures of democratization and the challenges of liberalization. Pairing sophisticated theoretical frameworks with firsthand accounts from actors in the oil industry, this book identifies the root causes of Nigeria’s development struggles and offers practical policy solutions for successfully deregulating the oil sector. For public officials and policymakers as well as researchers, this book offers a critical new lens on the future of natural resource management in Nigeria and the Global South.

Book excerpt: High growth rates, economic deregulation and increasing marketisation have made the Asia the most dynamic region in the world. The book is an investigation into the oil markets of the region, rapidly expanding as world energy trade adjusts to the high rate of energy demand growth in Asia. Thekey Singapore market, its evolution and structure are examined, together with the rapid growth of derivative trading and other forms of risk management. The impact of derivatives failures such as the Baring's collapse, is considered. A key section of the book considers the impact of marketliberalization and structural industrial change taking place throughout Asia, with particular reference to China, India, Japan and Korea. Throughout Asia the link between economic development and regulation is complex, but vital to an understanding of the operation of markets.
