Book excerpt: Do you know the stories of well-known CEOs who failed as executives of major companies? Learn about these colorful derailers who misread symptoms of their own downfall and failed to take corrective action needed to succeed as leaders. Written for leaders, aspiring leaders, and anyone who makes a difference in the lives of others, author and leadership expert Tim Irwin, PhD, examines how failures of character common to even the most capable individuals - including deficits in authenticity, humility, self-management, and courage - repeatedly lead to downfall. By profiling the collapse of CEOs Robert Nardelli (Home Depot), Carly Fiorina (HP), Durk Jager (Proctor and Gamble), Steven Heyer (Starwood Hotels), and more, this book shows how our failings become more dangerous as we take on greater leadership responsibilities, and how they can cause us to ignore glaring warning signs that might otherwise prevent catastrophe. In Derailed, Tim shares; An outline of the key character traits that prevent us from becoming de-railed Assessments and suggestions on how to analyze your “Character Quotient” What made these business executives fail without demeaning their character By asking what we can learn from those who have fallen, and how we can avoid our own failure, Derailed teaches us to stay on track. Book Synopsis Dreams Derailed by : William A. Schwab
Download or read book Dreams Derailed written by William A. Schwab and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 2016 presidential campaign millions of voters, concerned about the economic impact of illegal immigration, rallied behind the notion of a border wall between the United States and Mexico. Well into the Trump presidency, immigration endures as a hotly contested issue in United States politics. In Dreams Derailed sociologist William A. Schwab shares the stories of immigration reform advocates and follows up on stories told in his 2013 book Right to DREAM, which argued in favor of the DREAM Act that would have provided conditional residency for undocumented youth brought to the United States as children, a version of which was later enacted by executive order and referred to as DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). Taking as its focal point the Trump administration’s decision to rescind Obama-era DACA protection, Dreams Derailed delves into the economic, political, and social factors that inform the public conversation about immigration, making a clear case for the many benefits of inclusive policies and the protection of undocumented youths. Schwab also takes a close look at the factors that carried Donald Trump to the White House, demonstrates how economic upheaval and the issue of immigration influenced the 2016 presidential election, analyzes current immigration laws, and suggests next steps for reform.

Book Synopsis Democracy Derailed in Russia by : M. Steven Fish
Download or read book Democracy Derailed in Russia written by M. Steven Fish and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-08-29 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why has democracy failed to take root in Russia? After shedding the shackles of Soviet rule, some countries in the postcommunist region undertook lasting democratization. Yet Russia did not. Russia experienced dramatic political breakthroughs in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but it subsequently failed to maintain progress toward democracy. In this book, M. Steven Fish offers an explanation for the direction of regime change in post-Soviet Russia. Relying on cross-national comparative analysis as well as on in-depth field research in Russia, Fish shows that Russia's failure to democratize has three causes: too much economic reliance on oil, too little economic liberalization, and too weak a national legislature. Fish's explanation challenges others that have attributed Russia's political travails to history, political culture, or to 'shock therapy' in economic policy. The book offers a theoretically original and empirically rigorous explanation for one of the most pressing political problems of our time.

Download or read book Derailed written by Jerry Tanner and published by . This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derailed is the saga of a highly successful businessman brought down by mere allegations of misconduct, his subsequent confrontation with an American legal system that categorically denied him a fair trial. A "natural" entrepreneur, Jerry started a $20 million dollar health care company from scratch, then took over a corrupt, bankrupt mail order pharmacy and within one year turned it into a $30 million dollar company. And all of that would have been just the beginning. But when Jerry found himself entangled in a legal battle over allegations of sexual assault brought by the sons of an evangelical pastor in one of the cradles of the religious right, it all came crashing down. As a gay man highly successful in business, Jerry did not fit the moralist model of the prevailing "community." In short, he wasn't supposed to be successful. This book details Jerry's early life, the rapid rise of his successful healthcare companies, and the fall that came with the criminal indictment. Derailed is a powerful commentary on the hypocrisy of an American society founded on the principles of equality and tolerance, yet steeped in institutionalized prejudice, and a stinging indictment of our system of courts and jurisprudence.
