Die Rolle der Frau war viele Jahre immer die der Untergeordneten, Unterdrückten. Frauen hatten in der Männerwelt nichts zu sagen. Sie waren nur für Haushalt und Kinder gut, Arbeit war Männersache. Viele Frauen aus den früheren Genrationen hatten kein Problem mit ihrem Dasein als Ehefrau und Mutter. Später, als die Frauen auch außerhalb des eigenen Haushaltes tätig wurden, war die Ungleichheit zwischen ihnen und den Männern viel deutlicher spürbar. Weniger Geld für Frauen für stundenlange Arbeit. Ausbeutung und Unterdrückung, Doppelbelastung und der Spagat zwischen Arbeit und Herd machte den Frauen zu schaffen. Die Emanzipation begann schleichend und langsam. Der Umdenkungsprozess der Frauen hatte eingesetzt. Als sich die ersten wenigen Frauen zusammen schlossen, Frauenbewegungen ins Leben gerufen wurden, änderte sich das Bild. Frauen gingen auf die Barrikaden, forderten ihre Rechte ein. Sie wollten sich nicht mehr unterdrücken lassen, sie wollten mitbestimmen, mitdenken, das Sagen haben. All dies, was bisher stets nur den Männern vorbehalten war. Die Benachteiligungen, das Reduziert sein auf bestimmte Dinge, nahmen die Frauen nicht mehr hin.

In diesem Band werden ausgewählte Schriften Annemarie Trögers neu zugänglich gemacht und in Kommentaren ehemaliger Weggefährtinnen und Weggefährten als historische Quellen behandelt, die ein Stück bundesrepublikanischer, vor allem Westberliner Universitäts- und Wissenschaftsgeschichte, wieder freilegen. Annemarie Tröger (1939-2013) gehörte zur Gruppe der Initiatorinnen der ersten Berliner Sommeruniversitäten von 1976 und 1977, die ein Startschuss waren für die Entwicklung der bundesdeutschen Frauenforschung. Women were often considered commodities and marriage was far away from the romantic stereotypes people relate to it today. While marriages served as diplomatic tools or means of political legitimization in the past, the discourses about marital relationships changed and women expressed their demands more openly. Discourses about marriage in history and literature naturally became more and more heated, especially during the "long" 19th century, when marriages were contested by social reformers or political radicals, male and female alike. The present volume provides a discussion of the role of marriage and the discourses about in different chronological and geographical contexts and shows which arguments played an important role for the demand for more equality in martial relationships. It focuses on marriage discourses, may they have been legal or rather socio-political ones. In addition, the disputes about marriage in literary works of the 19th and 20th centuries are presented to complement the historical debates.
