Download or read book Der paradox Eine written by Reinhard M. Hübner and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These essays propose a new dating of, and historical setting for the letters of "Ignatius of Antioch". In so doing this volume forms an important contribution to the study of Monarchianism and early church history as well. An examination of the fragments of Noëtus of Smyrna, the founder of Monarchianism, leads to the discovery of the oldest Regula fidei, and of its origin as part of anti-gnostic polemics. On the ground of late second-century parallels, especially Melito and Irenaeus, this Regula can be dated between 160 and 180 CE. It is within this context that the so-called Letters of Ignatius fit seamlessly. As a result of these findings this volume argues for a significant revision of our understanding of early church history. Monarchianism ("Sabellianism", "Patripassianism"), later considered heretical, is shown to have been the almost universally accepted belief within the Church up to the period of the Roman bishops Zephyrinus and Callistus.

Book excerpt: German translation of God's Prophetic Feasts by Jacob Keegstra.

Book Synopsis Fair Play: Diversity and Conflicts in Early Christianity by : Ismo Dunderberg
Download or read book Fair Play: Diversity and Conflicts in Early Christianity written by Ismo Dunderberg and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-04-09 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays in honour of Heikki Räisänen, New Testament professor at the University of Helsinki, consists of 22 essays written by his colleagues and students on Jesus, the gospels, Paul, early Christianity, and biblical interpretation. Räisänen's own research has been characterized by methodological awareness combined with a keen interest in ethical issues. Both these aspects come to expression in his insistence on "fair play" as a correct scholarly attitude involving an honest dialogue, a real encounter, and a recognition of diverging opinions. In this spirit, most of the essays in this book lay emphasis on issues related to early Christian diversity and conflicts, and to their challenge in modern society. The book is useful for scholars, academic teachers and students interested in various aspects of the New Testament, early Christianity, and hermeneutics.
Book Synopsis Coping with Versnel: A Roundtable on Religion and Magic by :
Download or read book Coping with Versnel: A Roundtable on Religion and Magic written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-05-25 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henk Versnel’s work on ancient religion has been seminal. For his 80th birthday, a group of scholars assembled to celebrate and analyze his oeuvre. What have been his most important insights? What will he bequeath to the 21st century? Specialists hold up to the light the main strands of Versnel’s scholarship, and he reacts to their praise and critique. An introduction that seeks to contextualize this oeuvre, and a bibliography of Versnel’s publications, round out the picture of a scholar who has put his stamp on the study of ancient religions and magical practices, and who has promoted the field in many ways, especially as the driving force behind Brill’s flagship series Religion in the Graeco-Roman World, of which this fittingly is the 200th volume.
