So finden sich die Fragen auch bei den Digital Natives und den modernen Medien wieder. Der Theologe Dietrich Bonhoeffer spiegelte 1944 in seinem Gedicht "Wer bin ich" die wesentliche Frage der menschlichen Existenz wider. Die Suche nach Antworten auf den Sinn des Daseins scheint ein unlösbares Rätsel. Dabei stößt der Suchende früher oder später auf sein Selbst und beginnt seinen Standort in der Welt zu suchen. Auf die essentielle Frage "Wer bin ich?" folgt im nächsten Schritt die Frage "Wie werde ich wahrgenommen?". Die heutige Lebenswelt bietet besonders Jugendlichen durch Digitalisierung und Globalisierung viel mehr Möglichkeiten sich zu entfalten als vor einhundert Jahren. Medien und das Internet im Besonderen sind dabei neue Einflussfaktoren im Gebiet der Identitätsbildung. Gerade im teilweise orientierungslosen Raum des Jugendendalters hat das Internet eine besondere Rolle. Das Internet bietet Anlaufstelle für persönliche, wissenschaftliche oder berufliche Fragen. Das Wissen über die Handhabung des Internets bleibt aber autodidaktisch, sodass die Jugendlichen auf sich selbst oder die Meinung Gleichaltriger gestellt sind. Die Vernetzung findet medial in sozialen Netzwerken statt – der Social Media. Der Social Media Bereich, als Teil des Internets ist mittlerweile nicht mehr aus dem Alltag der Jugendlichen wegzudenken. Der Großteil der meistgenutzten Programme auf den Smartphones sind Social Media Angebote.

Dieser Abschnitt beschäftigt sich insbesondere mit der Selbstinszenierung Jugendlicher durch Bildmaterial in den sozialen Medien, dem sozialen Vergleich, der zwangsläufig durch die Nutzung dieser Medien stattfindet und abschließend mit der Frage, wie Online- und Offline- Identität zusammenhängen, also der Frage danach, ob hier separiert werden kann oder ob beide Anteile gemeinsam betrachtet werden müssen, um die wahre Identität eine Person fassen zu können. Betrachtet man nun den Prozess der Identitätsbildung von Individuen, wird deutlich, dass dieser nur in Auseinandersetzung mit dem gesellschaftlichen Umfeld stattfinden kann. Da durch Plattformen wie Facebook und Instagram dieses Umfeld nun nicht mehr bloß durch reale Begegnungen, sondern auch durch Personen auf solchen Online- Plattformen konstituiert wird, scheint es unumgehbar, diese neue Form des gesellschaftlichen Umfelds in Betracht zu ziehen, wenn sich mit dem Thema der Identitätsbildung beschäftigt wird. Da die Jugendphase eine entscheidende Rolle für die Identitätsbildung ausmacht, soll der Fokus auf diese Phase gerichtet sein.
