Dazu stehen im Zentrum dieser Untersuchung Konstantins Entscheidungen, die das Christentum und die paganen Kulte betreffen, genauso wie die von ihm erlassenen Gesetze. Gesucht wird eine übergeordnete christentums- und kirchenfreundliche Religionspolitik als gemeinsames Muster seiner Beschlüsse. Für dieses Vorhaben muss Konstantins Herrschaft historisch eingeordnet werden. Daher widmet sich das folgende Kapitel Diokletian und der Tetrarchie, aus welcher heraus Konstantin seine Alleinherrschaft aufbaute. Daran schließt sich der Kern der Arbeit an, der die Herrschaft Konstantins und seine Entscheidungen und Gesetzte nach religiösen Motiven untersucht. Abschließend wird in den letzten beiden Kapiteln die Leitfrage aufgegriffen, inwieweit Konstantin nun eine christliche Religionspolitik betrieb und ob man sein Vermächtnis wirklich als die Konstantinische Wende bezeichnen kann. "Konstantin der Große - der erste Christ auf dem römischen Kaiserthron", so lautet die Überschrift eines Artikels der katholischen Kirche anlässlich des 1750-jährigen Geburtstags Konstantins im Jahr 2022. Diese Überschrift zeigt zweierlei. Einerseits wird deutlich, wie untrennbar das Christentum mit Konstantin verbunden ist. Andererseits verdeutlicht es die Bedeutung, die Konstantins Person durch seine rund 31-jährige Regentschaft von 306-337 von der Nachwelt zugeschrieben wird. Schon von antiken Autoren wird Konstantins Herrschaft als durch und durch christlich gedeutet. Entsprechendes spiegeln auch die Quellen wider. Während christliche Autoren wie der Konstantin-Biograph und Vater der Kirchengeschichte Eusebius von Caesarea ihn durchweg positiv bewerten, einem Urteil, dem sich der ebenfalls christliche Apologet und Rhetoriker Laktanz anschließt, sieht der pagane Historiker Zosimos in Konstantin und seiner Affinität zum Christentum die Ursache für Verfall und Niedergang des Römischen Reiches. Folglich fällt sein Urteil über ihn weniger wohlwollend aus. Trotz dieser diametralen Beurteilungen seiner Herrschaft, sind sich beide Seiten einig, dass Konstantin seine Entscheidungen im Sinne des Christentums und der Kirche getroffen habe.

Was waren die konkreten Maßnahmen und was die Folgen der Konstantinischen Wende? Diese Fragen werden in der vorliegenden Arbeit disskutiert und beantwortet. Die Konstantinische Wende lässt sich nicht auf einen Zeitpunkt festlegen, sondern war ein langer Prozess, der mit dem so genannten Toleranzedikt des römischen Kaisers Galerius von April 311 begann und auch nach dem Tod Konstantins 337 noch nicht beendet war. Ein erster Wendepunkt in der Religionspolitik war das galerianische Edikt deshalb, weil es das Ende der Christenverfolgungen bedeutete und das Christentum zu einer religio licita - eine vom Staat offiziell geduldete und zugelassene Religion – wurde. Um diese Maßnahme und die in den folgenden Jahren von Konstantin getroffenen Entscheidungen zu verstehen, ist es zunächst notwendig auf die Umstände im Römischen Reich zu dieser Zeit einzugehen. Im weiteren beschäftige ich mich mit der Schlacht an der Milvischen Brücke und Konstantins Visionen, da diese Ereignisse in der Fachliteratur zum grössten Teil eine herausragende Rolle spielen und Anlässe zu Diskussionen bieten. Im dritten Abschnitt des Hauptteils geht es dann um Konstantins Verwicklungen in die christliche Kirche. Wo zeigte er Iniziative, wo überliess er die interne Kirchenpolitik den Bischöfen? Um den heutigen Forschungsstand über die Konstantinischene Wende aufzuzeigen, sind die Werke von Bleiken, Bleckmann, Dassmann und Hausammann zu nennen. Das von Kraft herausgegebene Buch „Konstantin der Grosse“ zeigt die Entwicklung der Forschung vom 19. bis in die 70er Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts und enthält mit dem Aufsatz „Die „Bekehrung“ Konstantins des Großen“ von Henri Grégoire einen oft zitierten Gegenpol zu der auf Konstantin fokussierten Sichtweise. Die Grundlage für die in der Literatur aufgestellten Thesen sind stets Eusebius von Caesarea, Laktanz und Eutropius. Wobei Eusebius und Laktanz zu den christlichen Autoren gezählt werden und Eusebius zu den heidnischen Autoren gerechnet wird.1 Der Tod Konstantins stellt in dieser Arbeit das Ende des Zeitrahmens dar, denn das Fundament (nämlich die „Wende“) für die enge Bindung der Kirche an den Staat ist zu diesem Zeitpunkt längst gelegt und die Nachfolger Konstantins – mit Ausnahme der Herrschaft des Kaisers Julian (361-363 n. u. Z.), der die heidnischen Religionen restaurieren wollte - bauten auf ihm die weltumstannende christliche Kirche auf.

Wie, und vor allem, wieso genau Konstantin sich vor über 1700 Jahren dem Christentum zugewandt hat, ist und bleibt eine brennende Frage, da dieser Entscheid den weiteren Verlauf der europäischen und auch der weltweiten Geschichte wie vielleicht kein anderer beeinflusst hat. Denn das Christentum hat sich darauf zur Weltreligion entwickelt. Die umstrittenste Frage ist, ob Konstantin wirklich ein Christ war. Oder hat er sich aus reinen machtpolitischen Überlegungen dem Christentum zugewandt? Oder lässt sich diese Frage gar nicht beantworten, weil sie aus einer modernen Sichtweise auf die Antike entspringt? In dieser Arbeit sollen nun, nach einer kurzen Einführung in Konstantins Zeit, vier verschiedene deutschsprachige Forschungsstandpunkte zu dieser Thematik genauer betrachtet werden. Angefangen mit Jacob Burckhardt und dessen Wert "Die Zeit Constantins des Grossen" von 1853 geht es weiter mit Joseph Vogt, der 1949 "Constantin der Grosse und sein Jahrhundert" veröffentlichte, über Jochen Bleicken, dessen Buch "Constantin der Grosse und die Christen" aus dem Jahr 1990 stammt, bis zu Klaus Martin Girardet und seinem Werk über Konstantin mit dem Titel "Der Kaiser und sein Gott", welches 2010 erschienen ist. Es sind Arbeiten aus verschiedenen Zeitpunkten der letzten 160 Jahre. An diesen lässt sich besonders gut beobachten, dass der Zeitpunkt der Veröffentlichung und der persönliche Hintergrund des Autors einen wichtigen Unterschied in deren Beurteilung machen. Denn, um auf das Eingangszitat von Faulkner zurückzukommen, die Geschichte ist nicht tot, sie wird immer wieder neu in der Gegenwart konstruiert. Seine Bekehrung wird von den christlichen Autoren auf seine Vision vor der entscheidenden Schlacht am 28. Oktober 312 n. Chr. an der Milvischen Brücke zurückgeführt 3 . Hier setzt das Thema der vorliegenden Arbeit an. Sie geht der Frage nach, ob es wirklich eine Bekehrung des Kaisers gegeben hat, und ob die Schlacht an der Milvischen Brücke zur Konstantinischen Wende geführt hat. Hierzu wird sowohl das zeitliche Geschehen an der Milvischen Brücke wie auch das Edikt von Mailand betrachtet. Der Donatistenstreit, die militärisch ausgetragene Machtfrage zwischen Konstantin und Licinius im Jahre 316 n. Chr. sowie die Schlacht gegen Licinius 324 n. Chr. bei Adrianopel werden ausgeklammert, da sie den Rahmen dieser Ausarbeitung sprengen würden. Zur weiteren Fortführung wird im Geschehen der Jahre 321-337 n. Chr. wieder angesetzt. Angebliche Zeugnisse der Hinwendung werden dargelegt, um abschließend ein Fazit ziehen zu können, und ein zusammenfassendes Ergebnis zu erzielen. Die Quellenlage ist günstig. Die Kirchenschreiber bieten eine nicht unwesentliche Zahl von Reden, Briefen und Erlassen des Kaisers, und da der Schwerpunkt der Konstantin-Forschung im Verhältnis des Kaisers zum Christentum liegt, werden die zeitgenössischen Quellen von Eusebius 4 und Laktanz 5 auf der Suche nach Antworten helfen. Auch der Forschungsstand zu dieser Materie ist vielfältig, es gibt eine große Fülle von späten Erzählungen. Zu akzentuieren sind hierbei vor allem die Schriften von Klaus Martin Girardet 6 sowie von Alexander Demandt 7 .

Book excerpt: Against the Galileans (where "Galileans" meant the followers of the man from Galilee, or Christians) was written by the last pagan Emperor of Rome, Flavius Claudius Julianus, who lived from 331-363 AD, as part of his attempts to reverse the Empire's conversion to Christianity started by Emperor Constantine in 313 AD. This work was acknowledged by one of Julian's greatest critics, Cyril, the Patriarch of Alexandria, as one of the most powerful books of its sort ever written. Even though Cyril was Patriarch nearly 90 years after Julian's death, he was motivated to write a refutation titled Contra Iulianum ("Against Julian"). For more than 200 years, Julian's book remained the standard criticism of Christianity. Finally, in an attempt to suppress the work, the Emperor Justinian I (527-565) ordered all copies of the book destroyed. As a result, the only record of Julian's book remained in the parts quoted from in it in Cyril's criticism. It was only more than 1,200 years later that the English classical scholar Thomas Taylor (1758-1835) first translated Cyril's work into English-and from that, attempted a reconstruction of Julian's book based on Julian's quotes from Cyril's work. Taylor titled this manuscript "The Arguments of the Emperor Julian against the Christians, translated from the Greek fragments preserved from the Greek fragments preserved by Cyril Bishop of Alexandria, to which are added, Extracts from the other works of Julian relative to the Christians" and privately published his reconstruction in 1809 for a very limited circle of friends. Taylor's reconstruction was finally published for a larger audience by William Nevis in 1873. This new edition contains the full Taylor reconstruction, along with his original appendices. From 1913 to 1923, British-American classical philologist and Professor of Greek at Bryn Mawr College, Pennsylvania, Wilmer Cave Wright, retranslated all of Julian's works. Wright included a new translation of the exact quotes only from Julian, as reproduced by Cyril, and some other remaining fragments. Wright's original manuscript is also included in this new edition, making it to be the most complete reconstruction of Julian's book ever printed.

The twenty-two papers presented here give a useful overview on current research on Rough Cilicia, from the Bronze Age to the Byzantine period, with a variety of methods, from surveys to excavations. The first two articles (Yağcı, Jasink and Bombardieri), deal with the Bronze and Iron Ages, and refer to the questions of colonisation, influences, and relations. The following four articles (Tempesta, de Souza, Tomaschitz, Rauh et al.) concern the pirates of Cilicia and Isauria who were a big problem, not only for the region but throughout the Mediterranean and Aegean during the late Hellenistic and especially Roman periods. Approaching the subject of Roman Architecture, Borgia recalls Antiochus IV of Commagene, a king with good relations to Rome. Six papers (Spanu, Townsend, Giobbe, Hoff, Winterstein, and Wandsnider) publish work on Roman architecture: architectural decoration, council houses, Roman temples, bath architecture, cenotaph, and public buildings. Ceramics is not neglected and Lund provides a special emphasis on ceramics to demonstrate how pottery can be used as evidence for connections between Rough Cilicia and northwestern Cyprus.
