Book excerpt: Now revised and updated to incorporate numerous new materials, this is the major source for researching American Christian activity in China, especially that of missions and missionaries. It provides a thorough introduction and guide to primary and secondary sources on Christian enterprises and individuals in China that are preserved in hundreds of libraries, archives, historical societies, headquarters of religious orders, and other repositories in the United States. It includes data from the beginnings of Christianity in China in the early eighth century through 1952, when American missionary activity in China virtually ceased. For this new edition, the institutional base has shifted from the Princeton Theological Seminary (Protestant) to the Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural Relations at the University of San Francisco (Jesuit), reflecting the ecumenical nature of this monumental undertaking.

Book Synopsis Jute and empire by : Gordon T Stewart
Download or read book Jute and empire written by Gordon T Stewart and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dundee had an interesting role to play in the jute trade, but the main player in the story of jute was Calcutta. This book follows the relationship of jute to empire, and discusses the rivalry between the Scottish and Indian cities from the 1840s to the 1950s and reveals the architecture of jute's place in the British Empire. The book adopts significant fresh approaches to imperial history, and explores the economic and cultural landscapes of the British Empire. Jute had been grown, spun and woven in Bengal for centuries before it made its appearance as a factory-manufactured product in world markets in the late 1830s. The book discusses the profits made in Calcutta during the rise of jute between the 1880s and 1920s; the profits reached extraordinary levels during and after World War I. The Calcutta jute industry entered a crisis period even before it was pummelled by the depression of the 1930s. The looming crisis stemmed from the potential of the Calcutta mills to outproduce world demand many times over. The St Andrew's Day rituals in Calcutta, begun three years before the founding of the Indian Jute Mills Association. The ceremonial occasion helps the reader to understand what the jute wallahs meant when they said they were in Calcutta for 'the greater glory of Scotland'. The book sheds some light on the contentious issues surrounding the problematic, if ever-intriguing, phenomenon of British Empire. The jute wallahs were inextricably bound up in the cultural self-images generated by British imperial ideology.

Download or read book Key Profession written by Harold Perkin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1969 Key Profession looks at the rise of the academic profession to its influence and importance, through the history of the Association of the University of Teachers, founded in 1919 and celebrating its half-centenary in 1969. As a study of a professional organization and political pressure group concerned with salary negotiations, conditions of service, academic freedom, and public policy on higher education, it is of interest not only to social historians but also to economists, political scientists, sociologists, and all those who have at heart the search for intellectual truth, the maintenance of cultural values and the integrity of the universities. The book tries to show what part the academic profession has played in the shaping of higher education, and through it of modern society, in twentieth-century Britain.

Book Synopsis Miners, Unions and Politics, 1910–1947 by : Alan Campbell
Download or read book Miners, Unions and Politics, 1910–1947 written by Alan Campbell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The near destruction of the coal industry and the NUM offers a timely vantage point from which to appraise their history. This book presents a collection of specially commissioned essays by leading authorities on miners' history, which challenge the stereotypical imagery of miners' solidarity and loyalty to the Labour Party. This book examines the politics of the Miners' Federation of Great Britain, the unique influences of syndicalism and communism within some of its constituent areas, and the uneven pace of the Labour Party's 'forward march' within the coalfields. Such national developments are then studied within their diverse regional contexts through a series of case studies which permits comparison between the major British coalfields. Finally, the book considers the attempts to overcome these regional diversities with the formation of the National Union of Mineworkers and the nationalisation of the mining industry.
Book Synopsis Cinema, Censorship and Sexuality 1909-1925 (Routledge Revivals) by : Annette Kuhn
Download or read book Cinema, Censorship and Sexuality 1909-1925 (Routledge Revivals) written by Annette Kuhn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-06 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1988. This book shows how censorship as a set of institutions, practices and discourses was involved in the struggle over the nature of cinema in the early twentieth century. It also reveals the part played in this struggle by other institutions, practices and discourses — for example ‘new’ knowledge about sexuality and organisations devoted to the promotion of public morality. Instead of censorship simply being an act of prohibition by a special institution, this work reveals the issues at work were far more complex and contradictory — opening up critical scrutiny and challenging assumptions. This title will be of interest to students of media and film studies.
