Book excerpt: The United States Army in Afghanistan is a powerful story of the first military efforts to strike back at the terrorist organization al Qaeda in the aftermath of its 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Al Qaeda's leader, Osama bin Laden, believed he and his followers living and training under the protection of the Taliban regime in the far-off mountains of Afghanistan were beyond the reach of American arms. Richard W. Stewart in his penetrating essay on the early critical months of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM proves that bin Laden was wrong, chronicling how American, coalition, and allied Afghan units in a matter of months overthrew the Taliban regime and drove the al Qaeda into worldwide flight. His well-balanced story of American resolve, of danger and hardship, and of ultimate victory during the opening days of the Global War on Terrorism is worthy of study, providing critical perspective on how conventional and unconventional forces not only complemented each other's strengths but also compensated for each other's weaknesses.

Marshall, that "American military officers, of whatever service, should share common ground ethically and morally." In this new edition, the authors methodically explore that common ground, reflecting on the basics of the Profession of Arms, and the officer's special place and distinctive obligations within that profession and especially to the Constitution.

Book excerpt: This 9th edition has been revised and updated to better present our current understanding of the optimal medical management of diseases and syndromes caused by biological threat agents. Medical defense against the use of pathogens and toxins as battlefield weapons, or in terrorism, is an unfamiliar yet important subject to many military and civilian healthcare providers. The US military has pursued research relevant to the medical defense against biological threat agents (bio-agents) since World War II, first in concert with an offensive weapons program, then -- for the past 50 years -- as a purely defensive research program. However, the 2001 terrorist attacks on the US mainland, and subsequent anthrax mail attacks, emphasized to national and local political leaders, lawmakers, medical opinion makers, and the public at large, that the bio-agent threat was real and required much more planning, training, and resources for an effective response.

Competent leaders of character are essential for the Army to meet the challenges in the dangerous and complex security environment we face today. The U.S. Army Leadership Handbook (FM 6-22) is the Army’s flagship field manual on leadership. It establishes leadership doctrine and fundamental principles for all officers, noncommissioned officers, and Army civilians across all components using the “BE-KNOW-DO” concept. It is critical that Army leaders be agile, multiskilled athletes who have strong moral character, broad knowledge, and keen intellect. Leaders—military and civilian alike—must set the example, teach, and mentor, and this manual provides the principles, concepts, and training to accomplish this important task. Filled with leadership principles crucial to the U.S. military and equally applicable to leaders in any walk of life, this up-to-date manual from the Army will teach all leaders everything they need to know.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at several troop categories based on primary function and analyzes the ratio between these categories to develop a general historical ratio. This ratio is called the Tooth-to-Tail Ratio. McGrath's study finds that this ratio, among types of deployed US forces, has steadily declined since World War II, just as the nature of warfare itself has changed. At the same time, the percentage of deployed forces devoted to logistics functions and to base and life support functions have increased, especially with the advent of the large-scale of use of civilian contractors. This work provides a unique analysis of the size and composition of military forces as found in historical patterns. Extensively illustrated with charts, diagrams, and tables. It explains our Army's historical significance in the formation and preservation of our Nation and its role today and in the future as a member of the joint force to guarantee the Nation's strength and independence. At the heart of this doctrine is the professional Soldier-our true asymmetric advantage and most valued asset. Today's Soldiers are the legacy of the millions of Soldiers who came before them. They each freely volunteer to serve a higher purpose--an ideal greater than themselves. Soldiers continually demonstrate their character, commitment, and competence to protect our Nation under demanding and complex conditions. The oath they freely take to the Constitution of the United States is our Soldiers' sacred bond to maintain the confidence of the American people as trusted professionals in the world's premier land force.

Book excerpt: The United States Army is one of the most complex, best run organizations in the world, and central to the Army's success are strong leadership and exceptional leadership development. Army leaders must be able to act decisively and effectively in challenging situations. But the Army, despite its organizational structure, does not train leaders in a hierarchical manner. Dispersed leadership is the key to the success of the Army leadership model. Now, for the first time, you can have access to the Army's successful leadership philosophy and the principles that are outlined in Be Know Do the official Army Leadership Manual. Be Know Do makes this critical information available to civilian leaders in all sectors--business, government, and nonprofit--and gives them the guidelines they need to create an organization where leadership thrives. --(Text refers to the hardcover edition)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Military History provides the United States Army-in particular, its young officers, NCOs, and cadets-with a comprehensive but brief account of its past. The Center of Military History first published this work in 1956 as a textbook for senior ROTC courses. Since then it has gone through a number of updates and revisions, but the primary intent has remained the same. Support for military history education has always been a principal mission of the Center, and this new edition of an invaluable history furthers that purpose. The history of an active organization tends to expand rapidly as the organization grows larger and more complex. The period since the Vietnam War, at which point the most recent edition ended, has been a significant one for the Army, a busy period of expanding roles and missions and of fundamental organizational changes. In particular, the explosion of missions and deployments since 11 September 2001 has necessitated the creation of additional, open-ended chapters in the story of the U.S. Army in action. This first volume covers the Army's history from its birth in 1775 to the eve of World War I. By 1917, the United States was already a world power. The Army had sent large expeditionary forces beyond the American hemisphere, and at the beginning of the new century Secretary of War Elihu Root had proposed changes and reforms that within a generation would shape the Army of the future. But world war-global war-was still to come. The second volume of this new edition will take up that story and extend it into the twenty-first century and the early years of the war on terrorism and includes an analysis of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq up to January 2009.
