Book Synopsis The Sociophonetics of Dublin English by : Marion Schulte
Download or read book The Sociophonetics of Dublin English written by Marion Schulte and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sociophonetics of Dublin English shows how social inequalities and language are connected by the stances speakers take in interaction. It is based on an instrumental phonetic analysis of recorded interviews and broadcasting data and a detailed qualitative account of the same data as well as the socio-cultural context in Ireland. The analysis not only considers macro-social categories but also pragmatic norms and situational, more fluid aspects of communication. Contemporary social meanings and associated phonetic realisations are described and explained as the result of diachronic developments. Since the independence of Ireland local pronunciations have been re-evaluated and realisations connected with the former coloniser have fallen out of use even in formal and powerful domains. This investigation thus highlights the importance of diachronic data to understand contemporary sociolinguistic variation.
Book Synopsis Social Housing, Disadvantage, and Neighbourhood Liveability by : Michelle Norris
Download or read book Social Housing, Disadvantage, and Neighbourhood Liveability written by Michelle Norris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a groundbreaking longitudinal study, researches studied seven similar social housing neighbourhoods in Ireland to determine what factors affected their liveability. In this collection of essays, the same researchers return to these neighbourhoods ten years later to see what’s changed. Are these neighbourhoods now more liveable or leaveable? Social Housing, Disadvantage and Neighbourhood Liveability examines the major national and local developments that externally affected these neighbourhoods: the Celtic tiger boom, area-based interventions, and reforms in social housing management. Additionally, the book examines changes in the culture of social housing through studies of crime within social housing, changes in public service delivery, and media reporting on social housing. Social Housing, Disadvantage and Neighbourhood Liveability offers a new body of data valuable to researchers in Ireland and abroad on how to create more equitable and liveable social housing.
Book Synopsis Cityscapes and Perceptual Dialectology by : Jennifer Cramer
Download or read book Cityscapes and Perceptual Dialectology written by Jennifer Cramer and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-02-22 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection presents papers relating to the state of the art in Perceptual Dialectology research. The authors take an international view of the field of Perceptual Dialectology, broadly defined, to assess the similarities and contrasts in non-linguists’ perceptions of the dialect landscape. The volume is global in focus, and chapters discuss data gathered in the United States, the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, and South Korea. The common methods used by many of the contributors means that readers will be able to draw comparisons from the breadth of the volume. The primary focus of this volume is geared toward an examination of dialect perceptions in and of cities, with an additional goal of presenting empirical, theoretical, and methodological advancements in Perceptual Dialectology. Authors’ contributions to the collection examine how the urban setting influences perceptions of linguistic variation and, in the course of examining the connections between place and perceptions, explore several interrelated themes of linguistic variation, including the differences in the perception of rural and urban areas, processes of perception and language change, and the relationship between perception and ‘reality’.

Book excerpt: By examining a range of experiences from both the north and south of Ireland, this book asks what the ideal of sustainable development might mean to specific rural groups and how sustainable development goals have been pursued across the policy spectrum. It assesses the extent of commitment to a living countryside in Ireland and compares various opportunities and obstacles to the actual achievement of sustainable rural development. How different sectors of rural society will be challenged in terms of future survival provides an overarching theme throughout.
Book Synopsis Comparative Spatial Deprivation in Ireland by : Sally Cook
Download or read book Comparative Spatial Deprivation in Ireland written by Sally Cook and published by Combat Poverty Agency. This book was released on 2000 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyses the spatial dimensions of deprivation in Ireland. Despite the economic boom in the Republic of Ireland, the number of poor people has remained high. There is a danger that the ongoing hype about the Celtic Tiger could serve to distract from the urgency of the situation. The high average prosperity masks massive internal inequality. This raises important questions about the nature and causes of poverty and social deprivation; in particular, there is a need for a greater understanding of the geographical dimensions of poverty and deprivation. The main aim of this report is to undertake a detailed analysis of socio-economic indicators at small-area level for all of Ireland, adopting a common methodology for both North and South.
Book Synopsis Poor People, Poor Places by : Dennis Graham Pringle
Download or read book Poor People, Poor Places written by Dennis Graham Pringle and published by Oak Tree Press (Ireland). This book was released on 1999 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty is not uniformly distributed throughout Ireland. Some areas clearly experience much higher levels of poverty than others, whether urban public housing estates or peripheral rural areas. However, the spatial dimensions of poverty are, at best, only partially understood. This book brings together disparate sources of information on the geography of poverty and initiates a debate from which can emerge more effective policy responses. It should be of interest to students of geography and the social sciences, and should appeal to policy-makers and practitioners concerned with spatial responses to poverty, such as those involved in urban, rural and community interventions.

Book Synopsis Développement, inégalités, pauvretés by : Nicola Maria Boccella
Download or read book Développement, inégalités, pauvretés written by Nicola Maria Boccella and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 2005 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Dans l'essai introductif Growth and Inegality.

Book Synopsis Linguistic Variation and Social Practices of Normative Masculinity by : Fergus O'Dwyer
Download or read book Linguistic Variation and Social Practices of Normative Masculinity written by Fergus O'Dwyer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-16 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the ways in which linguistic variation and complex social practices interact toward the formation of male interactional identities in a sports club in Dublin, illustrating the affordances of studying sporting contexts in contributing to advancing sociolinguistic theory. Adopting a participant-informed ethnographic approach, the book examines both the social interactional contexts within the club and the sociopragmatic and sociophonetic features which contribute to the different performances of masculinity in and outside the club. The volume focuses particularly on the linguistic analysis of humor and its multifunctional uses as a means of establishing solidarity and social ties but also aggression, competitiveness, and status within the social world of this club as well as similar such clubs across Ireland. The book’s unique approach is intended to complement and build on existing sociolinguistic studies looking at linguistic variation in groups by supporting quantitative data with ethnographically informed insights to look at social meaning in interaction from micro-, meso-, and macro-levels. This book will be of particular interesting to graduate students and scholars in sociolinguistics, language, gender, and sexuality, and language and identity.

Book excerpt: This book, which is the first to be published in the emerging field of farm-level microsimulation, highlights the different methodological components of microsimulation modelling: hypothetical, static, dynamic, behavioural, spatial and macro–micro. To these case studies, O’Donoghue incorporates farming policies such as CAP income support payments, agri-environmental schemes, forestry planting incentives and biomass incentives – in doing so, he illuminates the merits of microsimulation in this environment.
