Book excerpt: Since the Australian dollar was floated in December 1983, the Australian central bank (Reserve Bank of Australia) has actively intervened in the foreign exchange market. Using daily exchange rate and official intervention data from January 1984 to December 2001, this paper examines what effects, if any, foreign exchange operations by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) have had on the level and volatility of the Australian dollar exchange rate. First, using an event study we evaluate the effectiveness of intervention by examining its direct effect on the level of the exchange rate. We find that over the period 1997-2001, the RBA has had some success in its intervention operations, by moderating the depreciating tendency of the Australian dollar. Second, we investigate the effects of RBA intervention policies on exchange rate volatility over the floating rate period. Our results indicate that intervention operations tend to be associated with an increase in exchange rate volatility, which suggests that official intervention may have added to market uncertainty. Overall, the effects of RBA intervention are quite modest on both the level and the volatility of the Australian dollar exchange rate.

Book excerpt: Macroeconomics is the most engaging introductory economics resource available to students today. Using real businesses examples to show how managers use economics to make real decisions every day, the subject is made relevant and meaningful. Each chapter of the text opens with a case study featuring a real business or real business situation, refers to the study throughout the chapter, and concludes with An Inside Look—a news article format which illustrates how a key principle covered in the chapter relates to real business situations or was used by a real company to make a real business decision. Solved problems in every chapter motivate learners to confidently connect with the theory to solve economic problems and analyse current economic events.

Book excerpt: Real, current macroeconomic events connected to the theory The new fourth edition of Blanchard's respected Macroeconomics text has been substantially revised to account for the impact of the GFC on the Australasian Economy and the many issues it raises. Thus, in addition to a first discussion of the crisis in Chapter 1 and numerous boxes and discussions throughout the book, we have brought forward the chapter on the GFC to Chapter 9. Macroeconomics is the only intermediate resource with a truly Australasian focus, demonstrating economic ideas and issues with hundreds of local and international examples. This comprehensive resource presents an integrated view of macroeconomics, drawing on the implications of equilibrium conditions in three sets of markets: the goods market, the financial markets and the labour market.

Covering the core economics principles and providing engaging, relevant examples within just nineteen Chapters, Hubbard Essentials of Economics is the perfect teaching and learning resource for a one semester unit. The authors present economics as a dynamic, relevant discipline for Australasian students. The key questions students of first year economics ask themselves are: `Why am I here?” and “Will I ever use this?’ Hubbard Essentials of Economics answers these questions by demonstrating that real businesses use economics to make real decisions every day. Each chapter of the text opens with a case study featuring a real business or real business situation, refers to the study throughout the Chapter, and concludes with An Inside Look—a news article format which illustrates how a key principle covered in the Chapter relates to real business situations or was used by a real company to make a real business decision.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study is to provide an in-depth analysis of the exchange rate pass-through relationship, using Australian imports of manufactures as a case study. The study begins by piecing together the theoretical literature on exchange rate pass-through, to provide the basis for the development of models for the empirical analysis. To place the empirical analysis m comparative context, a critical survey of the existing empirical literature on exchange rate pass-through is then undertaken. This is followed by a review of aspects of the structure and performance of Australian manufacturing that relate to the theme of the study. Next, the data and methodology are discussed. The analysis of exchange rate pass-through is conducted in two stages. First, it seeks to establish the degree to which Australian dollar (AUD) import prices of total manufactures and 50 product categories contained therein have responded to the massive fluctuations in the AUD during the 1980s. This is done by applying an econometric procedure which avoids the pit-falls in previous studies to a carefully assembled data set. Second, the study investigates the determinants of inter-product differences in the degree of exchange rate pass-through. This is done by relating the pass-through coefficients to a series of variables representing foreign control, quantitative restrictions (QRs), product characteristics and market structure within a cross section regression framework.

A healthy banking system, flexible exchange rate, and robust demand for commodities from Asia are important for good performance. Although recent global market volatility has increased uncertainty about the economic outlook and tilted risks downward, strong commodity demand from emerging Asia underpins Australia’s favorable economic prospects. The importance of tax and structural reforms is emphasized. The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority’s plans are used to undertake stress tests incorporating disruptions to funding markets.
