Download or read book Uranium written by Anthony Burke and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-07-03 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uranium, the most atomically unstable natural element on earth, has a unique place in the global geopolitics of resources. It provides energy to millions of people and its isotopes are used to power spacecraft and in nuclear medicine. But it is also at the heart of many of the planet's most deadly threats, including nuclear devastation and radioactive waste. Its mining has caused bitter conflict with indigenous peoples and its testing in nuclear weapons has left a toxic legacy. Yet the nonproliferation regime which aims to phase out nuclear weapons and manage the risks of nuclear energy is at risk of unravelling. In this book, Anthony Burke explores the geopolitical intrigue around uranium and the dilemmas of justice and security to which its development has given rise. The twenty-first century, he cautions, will be a time of reckoning and new reserves of political will must be found to manage the impact of this extraordinary mineral. Only by cooperating to achieve multilateral disarmament and greater international control over nuclear power can we ward off nuclear catastrophe and harness the potential of nuclear energy to help address, rather than create, some of the world's most pressing problems.

Book Synopsis Transforming the Global Biosphere by : Elliott Maynard
Download or read book Transforming the Global Biosphere written by Elliott Maynard and published by Watchmaker Publishing. This book was released on 2000-09 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transforming the Global Biosphere is based on the author's presentations to the World Future Society, and was written at the suggestion of Nobel Peace Prize Nominee and former UN Assistant Secretary General, Dr. Robert Muller. The author feels strongly that, in order to reverse the presently destructive impacts of Human Technology on the Global Biosphere, a Transformative Revolution in Human Consciousness must first take place. Such a "Magnificent Revolution" would take the form of Twelve Futuristic MetaStrategies...each of which would represent a Key SocioEcological Paradigm in itself. Each chapter of the book is developed around a MetaStrategy, providing examples of the Major Problems, as well as Innovative Solutions for reversing these Destructive Trends...through selected applications of Unique Alternative Technologies and Strategies. Dr. Maynard's Twelve MetaStrategies for Planetary Management are essentially a set of enlightened, yet effective, tools for Creative Thinking and Action. They are designed to promote environmentally sustainable future scenarios for the maximum benefit for Humans, their Planetary Homeworld, and for the Generations Yet to Come. In spite of the mounting evidence of environmental damage and disturbance to our Natural Planetary Systems, Dr. Maynard contends that solutions to these problems are available through insightful applications of Alternative Technologies, which can provide Clean Renewable Energy, Efficient Non-Polluting Transportation, Hi-Energy Nutrition, and Ecologically Appropriate Lifestyles for everyone on Earth. To achieve such a meaningful and lasting transformation, the author feels we must move rapidly and efficiently beyond the entanglements of 20th Century Thinking, and blaze adventurous new pathways into the Future. Together we must find the courage to explore the promising applications of alternative leading-edge Technologies, which often exist outside the boundaries of the Mainstream Scientific Thought. -- Elliott Maynard Blog.
Book Synopsis War Made Invisible by : Norman Solomon
Download or read book War Made Invisible written by Norman Solomon and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2024-09-10 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a new preface by the author on the Gaza war An unflinching exposé of the hidden costs of American war-making written with “an immense and rare humanity” (Naomi Klein) by one of our premier political analysts Every election cycle, candidates across the political spectrum repudiate what has become one of the most consequential and enduring components of American foreign policy: the forever war. Yet, once the ballots have been cast and the camera crews go home, the American war machine chugs along in almost complete obscurity. The journalist and political analyst Norman Solomon’s War Made Invisible is a “gripping and painful study” (Noam Chomsky) of the mechanisms behind our invisible, but perpetual, national state of war. From ever-compliant journalists serving as little more than stenographers for the Pentagon to futuristic military technology, horrifying in its destructive power, that makes dropping a bomb or pulling the trigger on a drone strike more of an abstraction than a moral calculation, Solomon’s “staggeringly important intervention” (Naomi Klein) exposes the profoundly human consequences at home and abroad of the bipartisan commitment to war making. In an era of increasing global instability in which it is all too easy to succumb to despair, Solomon pierces the “manufactured ‘fog of war’ . . . [and] casts sunlight, the best disinfectant, on the propaganda that fuels perpetual war” (Amy Goodman). Now in paperback with a new preface by the author on the Gaza war, Solomon’s incisive, ever-timely analysis “provide[s] the fresh and profound clarity that our country desperately needs” (Daniel Ellsberg) now more than ever.
Download or read book War and Health written by Catherine Lutz and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a detailed look at how war affects human life and health far beyond the battlefield Since 2010, a team of activists, social scientists, and physicians have monitored the lives lost as a result of the US wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan through an initiative called the Costs of War Project. Unlike most studies of war casualties, this research looks beyond lives lost in violence to consider those who have died as a result of illness, injuries, and malnutrition that would not have occurred had the war not taken place. Incredibly, the Cost of War Project has found that, of the more than 1,000,000 lives lost in the recent US wars, a minimum of 800,000 died not from violence, but from indirect causes. War and Health offers a critical examination of these indirect casualties, examining health outcomes on the battlefield and elsewhere—in hospitals, homes, and refugee camps—both during combat and in the years following, as communities struggle to live normal lives despite decimated social services, lack of access to medical care, ongoing illness and disability, malnutrition, loss of infrastructure, and increased substance abuse. The volume considers the effect of the war on both civilians and on US service members, in war zones—where healthcare systems have been destroyed by long-term conflict—and in the United States, where healthcare is highly developed. Ultimately, it draws much-needed attention to the far-reaching health consequences of the recent US wars, and argues that we cannot go to war—and remain at war—without understanding the catastrophic effect war has on the entire ecosystem of human health.
