Book Synopsis British Foreign Secretaries Since 1974 by : Kevin Theakston
Download or read book British Foreign Secretaries Since 1974 written by Kevin Theakston and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the changing role of the British Foreign Secretary and presents biographical case studies of all the individual holders of that post, the policies they persued and the issues they faced, since 1974. The work of the British Foreign Secretaries from James Callaghan to Robin Cook is examined in the context of the foreign policy-making machinery, the changing environment of British foreign policy, and the internal and external political forces with which they had to contend. Using a biographical case study approach, the chapters examine the careers, personalities, policies and influence of successive Foreign Secretaries to increase our knowledge and understanding of the work of the government, and the development of British foreign policy over the last thirty years. British Foreign Secretaries Since 1974 casts light on the hitherto shadowy and understudied role of personality in international relations and on how ten very different personalities helped to shape the detail and the articulation of British foreign policy.

Book Synopsis Generosity and Refugees: The Kosovars in Exile by : Robert Carr
Download or read book Generosity and Refugees: The Kosovars in Exile written by Robert Carr and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-05-23 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generosity and Refugees: The Kosovars in Exile is a work of history studying the social and political context encountered by Kosovar refugees fleeing their homeland to Australia at the height of the NATO-led war against Serbian forces in 1999. The flight of the Kosovar refugees changed Australia's asylum seeker policy forever, and a new test for international humanitarianism had begun. Today refugee crises globally beg the international community to embrace a generosity of spirit. A question this book asks is whether there are limits to generosity, inhibited by nationally contextual and historical perspectives. Generosity and Refugees examines the role of the media in framing public understandings of refugees with intriguing parallels for understanding the contemporary political climate internationally.
Book Synopsis Australia's Nuclear Policy by : Michael Clarke
Download or read book Australia's Nuclear Policy written by Michael Clarke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia’s Nuclear Policy: Reconciling Strategic, Economic and Normative Interests critically re-evaluates Australia’s engagement with nuclear weapons, nuclear power and the nuclear fuel cycle since the dawn of the nuclear age. The authors develop a holistic conception of ’nuclear policy’ that extends across the three distinct but related spheres - strategic, economic and normative - that have arisen from the basic ’dual-use’ dilemma of nuclear technology. Existing scholarship on Australia’s nuclear policy has generally grappled with each of these spheres in isolation. In a fresh evaluation of the field, the authors investigate the broader aims of Australian nuclear policy and detail how successive Australian governments have engaged with nuclear issues since 1945. Through its holistic approach, the book demonstrates the logic of seemingly conflicting policy positions at the heart of Australian nuclear policy, including simultaneous reliance on US extended deterrence and the pursuit of nuclear disarmament. Such apparent contradictions highlight the complex relationships between different ends and means of nuclear policy. How successive Australian governments of different political shades have attempted to reconcile these in their nuclear policy over time is a central part of the history and future of Australia’s engagement with the nuclear fuel cycle.

Book Synopsis Japan's Development Aid to China by : Tsukasa Takamine
Download or read book Japan's Development Aid to China written by Tsukasa Takamine and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paradoxically, Japan provides massive amounts of development aid to China, despite Japan's clear perception of China as a prime competitor in the Asia-Pacific region. This clearly written and comprehensive volume provides an overview of the way Japan's aid to China has developed since 1979. It explains the shifts that have taken place in Japan's China policy in the 1990s against the background of international changes and domestic changes in both countries, and offers new insights into the way Japanese aid policy making functions, thereby providing an alternative view of Japanese policy making that might be applied to other areas. Through a series of case studies, it shows Japan’s increasing willingness to use development aid to China for strategic goals and explains a significant shift of priority project areas of Japan’s China aid in the 1990s, from industrial infrastructure to socio-environmental infrastructure. The book argues that, contrary to the widely held view that Japan's aid to China is given for reasons of commercial self-interest, the objectives are much more complex and dynamic. Using original material, Takamine shows how policy making power within the Japanese government has shifted in recent years away from officials in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to politicians in the Liberal Democratic Party.

Book Synopsis Cooperative Security in the Asia-Pacific by : Jürgen Haacke
Download or read book Cooperative Security in the Asia-Pacific written by Jürgen Haacke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-01-21 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the most comprehensive analysis yet of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), which remains the foremost dialogue forum for the promotion of cooperative security in the Asia-Pacific. Contributors focus on the perspectives and roles of the key players in the ARF – ASEAN, the United States, China, Japan, and Australia – and discuss to what extent these participants have shaped the Forum's institutional development and affected its achievements and prospects against the backdrop of the evolving regional security architecture. They also examine in depth how participants have used the Forum to respond to a range of important transnational security issues and challenges, including terrorism and maritime security, as well as disaster relief. This work also explores how, despite the difficulties in reaching a new consensus regarding the collective pursuit of preventive diplomacy, some activist participants have succeeded in bringing about a notable, albeit incipient, 'practical turn' in the ARF’s security cooperation. This book will appeal to students of South-East Asian Politics, Asian Security Studies and International Relations in general.
Book Synopsis Contemporary Cases in U.S. Foreign Policy by : Ralph G. Carter
Download or read book Contemporary Cases in U.S. Foreign Policy written by Ralph G. Carter and published by CQ Press. This book was released on 2013-07-24 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many actors—from the president and members of Congress to interest groups, NGOs, and the media—compete to shape U.S. foreign policy. Contemporary Cases in U.S. Foreign Policy: From Terrorism to Trade, Fifth Edition, edited by Ralph G. Carter, captures this strategic interplay using 15 real-world cases, of which four are brand new: the death of Osama bin Laden and the use of targeted assassinations, nonproliferation policy and the U.S.–India nuclear agreement, the U.S. reaction to Egypt’s collision with the Arab Spring, and the surprise asylum request of blind Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng. Fully updated to cover the Obama administration, all cases have been revised to reflect recent developments. Whether grappling with use-of-force questions, the international financial crisis, legal and human rights, trade issues, multilateral approaches to the nuclear programs of North Korea and Iran, or climate change, Carter’s engaging case study approach encourages students to question motives, consider alternatives, and analyze outcomes.
