It doesn’t even have to be a femme fatale. Noir is somebody tripping over their own faults, somebody who has an Achilles heel, some kind of greed, or want or desire that leads them down a dark path, from which there is sometimes no return. No one is safe. There’s no place to hide in this collection of twelve stories from the dark side of the American Dream. Stories of noir from Coast to Coast. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John and Mary Elitch arrived in Colorado in 1880, and their first business venture was a restaurant. In 1888, John bought the sixteen-acre Chilcott Farm in the Highlands northwest of Denver. On May 1, 1890, thanks to 'donations' by family friend P.T. Barnum, the couple opened Elitch's Zoological Gardens, which featured a band in the gazebo, café, children's play area, and vaudeville performances, in addition to the zoo. John commenced planning a theater, then unexpectedly died in 1891 before the park's second season, leaving thirty-four-year-old Mary on her own. She resolved to keep the Gardens going, successfully built the playhouse, and journeyed to both New York and San Francisco for the winter season, "auditioning" plays and recruiting players to appear during the summer in Colorado. Elitch's Theatre in the Gardens presented its first full season in 1893 and become the longest-running summer stock theater in the U.S., featuring artists like Sarah Bernhardt and Douglas Fairbanks as special guest performers. Mary Elitch was the first female zookeeper, the first woman to run a botanic garden, and one of the first woman to own a theatre in the United States. This is the biography of a woman who overcame the challenges of widowhood, learned to be a businesswoman, and as the animating spirit of Elitch's Gardens, became one of Denver's cultural institutions -- Mary Elitch Long.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conceived in gold lust and born in the middle of nowhere on a cold autumn day, Denver grew up on mining booms and busts. Building their city rapidly and recklessly, Denverites tore down 'old-fashioned buildings' to construct their own grand new monuments. Not until the 1960s did the people of Denver, alarmed by wholesale urban-renewal demolitions and a new building boom, convince the mayor and city council to form the Denver Landmark Preservation Commission to identify and preserve the most important landmarks. To date, more than 250 landmarks and 28 historic districts have been preserved. Denver Landmarks and Historic Districts is the only volume of its kind to celebrate Denver's finest antique homes, churches, clubs, saloons, hotels, libraries, schools, restaurants, and banks -- many of which are open to the public. Here is the story of the Daniels and Fisher Tower, Elitch's Theatre, Denver's best city parks, the Denver Press Club, the Denver Athletic Club, notorious houses of ill repute, a tiny Five Points black mortuary that became a Hispanic pool hall, and much more. A brief history of Denver introduces readers to building types, materials, and styles and architects, showing how buildings reflect various ethnic and economic groups. An overview of the preservation movement covers the history of the Denver Landmark Preservation Commission and local preservation battles.

Book excerpt: Becoming "Papa's Girl" after her older sister defied Frederick G. Bonfils and married a man against his wishes, the second daughter of the infamous Denver Post owner lived a colorful and free-spirited life despite a strict and socially-deprived upbringing in the class oriented, inhospitable environment of early 1900s Denver. In her book, author Eva Hodges Watt paints a detailed, multi-layered picture of Helen Bonfils. Through interviews with those who knew the enigmatic Helen best, and by providing insight obtained through her own association with Helen, Watt puts supposed scandals, personal vendettas, colorful observations, and countless contradictions to paper for the reader to absorb and contemplate. Who was this complex woman who "gifted" Denver with a downtown church (the Holy Ghost), a little gem of a theater (the Bonfils), an elephant for the zoo, a Rembrandt for the Denver Art Museum, and much, much more? Who was this woman who inexplicably at sixty-eight and widowed, married her chauffeur, a high school dropout half her age? Why, she was none other than Helen Bonfils . . . Papa's girl.

Book excerpt: Over the course of eleven decades, the Denver Dry Goods and its predecessor, McNamara Dry Goods, proudly served Coloradoans, who knew they could 'shop with confidence' for the best quality at the fairest prices. Much more than the goods it sold, the store was a major institution that touched the lives of nearly every Denverite. Festive chandeliers adorned the four-hundred-foot-long main aisle during the holidays, and longtime salesclerks knew customers by name. The doors closed in 1987 and this fascinating history explores the cherished memories of Denver's most beloved department store.
