Entries are written in clear and concise English without the use of unnecessary dental or medical jargon, and many entries are supplemented by detailed line drawings. The dictionary defines terms in a broad range of dental specialist areas including primary care, anatomy and comparative anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, radiography, radiology, orthodontics, periodontology, restorative dentistry, dental public health, paediatric dentistry, oral surgery, embryology, homeopathy, pharmacology, sedation, histology, implantology, ethics, and oral medicine. For completeness, some drugs, techniques, and instruments of historical interest have been included. It also includes a number of biographies of those who are considered to have made a highly significant contribution to dentistry. The principal muscles, nerves, arteries, veins, foramina, and sinuses of the head and neck together with illustrations are grouped together as appendices: also included is a further reading list, and a list of common symbols and abbreviations used in both the UK and America. A key feature of this book is the Dictionary of Dentistry companion website, which provides quick access to recommended web links for many entries, plus over 100 full-colour illustrations.. An essential guide for dental practitioners and dental students, it is also an invaluable reference source for all members of the dental team, medical practitioners, lawyers involved with members of the dental profession, and the general reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dictionary of Dental Science: And Such Words and Phrases of the Collateral Sciences as Pertain to the Art and Practice of Dentistry The editor, in presenting the sixth edition of a Dictionary of Dental Science, and of such words and phrases of a number of collateral sciences as may be useful to both practitioner and student, is encouraged by the favor which the preceding editions have met with and also by a feeling, not in any manner egotistical, that this new edition will be found to be greatly superior to the three previous editions which he has revised. The only work of the kind in existence, the editor in his revision of the sixth edition has endeavored, by the addition of thousands of words, phrases, etc., to supply a treatise which will meet the requirement not only for a dictionary of purely dental words, etc., but also one that will, in a single volume, define all the medical, surgical, and other terms which the dental practitioner and student may require. In meeting such a want, - seven years having elapsed since the publication of the fifth edition, - additions have been made to nearly all the pages of the preceding edition in the revision of the present one. It was formerly supposed that the large number of medical dictionaries published would supply the dental student with all definitions of terms which were not strictly dental; but the rapid and extended advance of dental science and dental practice has rendered it absolutely necessary, at the present time, that a dental dictionary should also be a medical dictionary, and include many words and phrases pertaining to other sciences, but all having a connection with dentistry. The additions to this new edition, therefore, consist of definitions and descriptions of all of the latest terms and phrases which pertain to the dentistry of the present day, and also those of the collateral sciences. Among such additions may be found definitions of all forms of micro-organisms found in the mouth, electric units, electric words and phrases, and operations into which electricity has been introduced; as, electro-therapy or electro-motive power. The entries were selected in collaboration with dentists and orthodentists as well as on the basis of an analysis of the international dental literature. More than 2,000 illustrative phrases, phrasal verbs, and idiomatic expressions from all areas of clinical and office-based dentistry greatly enhance quantity and quality of the dictionary. Like all members of the Leximed family the Dictionary of Dentistry excels through linguistic details such as syllabification (45,000 entries), irregular plural forms, and pronounciation of English main entries (15,000 entries). The anatomical table in the appendix is based on the recently published International Anatomical Terminology (Terminologia Anatomica)
