Verweist dieser Titel einerseits auf seine adlige Herkunft, so spielt er doch vor allem auf sein umfassendes philosophisches Synthesestreben an. Völlig untypisch für seine Zeit lernte er Arabisch und Hebräisch, studierte islamische Philosophen und begann als erster Christ sich intensiv mit der mystischen Tradition des Judentums - der Kabbala - auseinanderzusetzen. Sein Bestreben christliche Glaubensinhalte durch Magie und Kabbala zu beweisen brachte ihm 1487 die Exkommunikation durch Papst Innozenz VIII. ein. Seine postum veröffentlichte Rede „De hominis dignitate“ wird von Jacob Burckhardt als „eins der edelsten Vermächtnisse“ der Renaissance überhaupt gefeiert. Gleichzeitig bildete sie die Einleitung zu einer für das Jahr 1478 geplanten Disputation in Rom, bei der Pico seine 900 synkretistischen Thesen den einflussreichsten Gelehrten seiner Zeit vorstellen und sie anschließend verteidigen wollte. Dieses ehrgeizige Unterfangen und die eindrucksvolle Spannweite seiner Quellen verhalfen ihm schon zu Lebzeiten, trotz des Scheiterns der Disputation, zu dem Ruf eines Ausnahmegelehrten. Doch wie passt dieser vielseitige Philosoph in seine Zeit? Ist er Sonderfall oder Musterbeispiel für einen Renaissance-Denker? Wie eigenständig sind seine Ideen überhaupt? Offenbaren die vielfältigen Einflüsse und Quellen des jungen Grafen nicht gleichzeitig fehlende philosophische Originalität, wie sie ihm und anderen Renaissance-Humanisten niemand geringeres als Hegel vorwarf? Mit diesen Fragen beschäftigt sich diese Hausarbeit, indem sie, ausgehend von der Biographie Picos, dessen Berührpunkte zu den geistigen Strömungen seiner Zeit aufzeigt und seine Ausführungen dann vor diesem Hintergrund beleuchtet. Hierzu beziehe ich mich auf seine Rede über die Würde des Menschen, in der Anthropologie und philosophisches Synthesestreben deutlich werden. Unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der eklektischen Vorgehensweise Picos und ihrer historischen Beurteilung soll abschließend geklärt werden, wie repräsentativ der Denker für seine Zeit ist.
