Download or read book Aggersborg written by Else Roesdahl and published by Aarhus University Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aggersborg is the largest of the Danish circular fortresses of the Viking Age. Built by the king, Harald Bluetooth, in the second half of the tenth century, it was strategically placed on the shore of the Limfjord. Together with other Danish fortifications it was intended to play a major role in the politics of northern Europe. The fortress overlaid an extensive Viking-Age rural settlement which was destroyed when the fortress was constructed. The well-preserved remains of buildings and the many artefacts excavated here provide a unique view of this settlement and of its material culture.0The book gives an account of the extensive excavations by the National Museum of Denmark of both the fortress and the rural settlement and sets their structures and the objects found within the wider context of the Viking Age. It also sheds new light on Denmark's history at a time of major cultural and political challenges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sophistication of the photographic process has had two dramatic results—freeing the artist from the confines of journalistic reproductions and freeing the scientist from the unavoidable imprecision of the artist's prints. So released, both have prospered and produced their impressive nineteenth- and twentieth-century outputs. It is this premise that William M. Ivins, Jr., elaborates in Prints and Visual Communication, a history of printmaking from the crudest wood block, through engraving and lithography, to Talbot's discovery of the negative-positive photographic process and its far reaching consequences.
Book Synopsis Cézanne and the End of Impressionism by : Richard Shiff
Download or read book Cézanne and the End of Impressionism written by Richard Shiff and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a broad foundation in the history of nineteenth-century French art, Richard Shiff offers an innovative interpretation of Cézanne's painting. He shows how Cézanne's style met the emerging criteria of a "technique of originality" and how it satisfied critics sympathetic to symbolism as well as to impressionism. Expanding his study of the interaction of Cézanne and his critics, Shiff considers the problem of modern art in general. He locates the core of modernism in a dialectic of making (technique) and finding (originality). Ultimately, Shiff provides not only clarifying accounts of impressionism and symbolism but of a modern classicism as well.
Book Synopsis Rembrandt, the Printmaker by : Erik Hinterding
Download or read book Rembrandt, the Printmaker written by Erik Hinterding and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rembrandt was the most original printmaker of all time. In no fewer than 300 images he covered the full range of styles and subjects for which he is celebrated, including self-portraits, scenes from the Bible, vignettes of everyday life and character studies. The well-known 'Hundred Guilder print', the 'Three Trees' and the 'Three Crosses' are among his most extraordinary creations. He was also famously experimental, often reworking and scratching at his copper plates to improve and extend their expressive power. The results can look startlingly modern, and continue to inspire artists today. This catalogue, compiled by three leading authorities on Rembrandt and printmaking, aims to illustrate a representative selection of his finest prints. Exciting new areas of research have opened up in recent years, making it possible not only to follow the progress of Rembrandt's work on each plate, but also revealing details of his practice of revising the images at various times during his life. The different papers he used will be studied and all the watermarks reproduced. The role played by Rembrandt's preparatory drawings is also now better understood, and all these new insights are presented to a wider public for the first time in this lavishly illustrated volume"--Provided by publisher.
