I hefted the tray up and carried it to his table. "I had to wait two clicks to get in here." "I told you to call ahead," I said, settling the tray on a stand and handing off his noodle bowl, followed by the plate of ox-roast. "I thought you were making that up." "I never lie about food," I said. "Is there anything else?" I swept the tray off the stand. "Ex-ASD?" "That's what the Director said. And he's not high on my list, unless it's the list of people I never want to see again." "What's the problem with Director Keef?" "Where do you want me to start?" "Start with the most recent." "My dead daughter," I snapped and walked away. After Reah's brush with death, she is understandably distrustful of most of her mates. Striking out on her own, she is determined to investigate a rash of child disappearances across the universes, in and outside the Alliances. The evil she discovers in the course of her investigations could bring all worlds to their knees if Reah doesn't find a way to destroy it.

Caught up in events outside their control, mistrusted even by their Starfleet companions, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his crew must struggle to win back their place of honour at the forefront of the Federation fleet. And if that were not enough to contend with, some of the crew have problems of their own. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dad! When did you get here?" Kevis looked up from his comp-vid—he was completing notes on a patient. He entered the last bit of information and stood to greet his father. "Kev, I have a patient I'd like to put in your clinic," Karzac said, walking in to sit beside his son's beautifully polished wood desk. Kevis, a physician for the past thirty years, ran a private clinic for patients with difficult mental problems. "Dad, surely not one of the Saa Thalarr," Kevis sat down again and hit an electronic key on his deskcomp. Kevis looked very much like his father—nearly six feet tall with light-brown hair and green-gold eyes. He'd opened his private clinic twenty years earlier on Refizan, his father helping financially. Kevis was doing very well for himself. "No. Not one of those. And I think when we get her, the Larentii will have already made a great deal of progress in her treatment. What we really need for her, I think, is peace and quiet, where there isn't anyone troubling her with something that needs to be done. She hasn't had a vacation in years, has been attacked and made very ill recently and there are other circumstances that have affected her. She almost killed herself three days ago." "Is there anything unusual about her?" Kevis lifted an eyebrow at his father. He suspected that the prospective patient might not be completely human. "She's High Demon, son, and hasn't been treated well for a very long time."
Download or read book Night Demon written by Stephen Wolberius and published by Dark Eye Press. This book was released on 2023-05-13 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lilian, a thirteen-year-old factory worker in an industrialising town plagued by a serial killer, can see an invisible affliction within other people. When her search for her missing best friend ends with a confrontation with a demon — and learning that the affliction turns humans into demons — another demon named Lucian saves her life and promises answers. Her first clue is that demons are responsible for the many murders. Unfortunately, Lilian’s new lead has problems of his own — Demon Hunters, who claim Lucian is the serial killer and who see Lilian as an accessory. Night Demon tells a claustrophobic gaslamp fantasy and horror story with a dark fantasy twist and edge-of-your-seat suspense. If you're a fan of classic American and British horror fiction but also like dark fantasy world-building and epic fights, you're in for a treat. What can you expect from reading Night Demon? • A strong female lead discovers that she needs to confront her mortality as well as her morality. • Language magic called Elilim, based on proto-indo-european, Mycenean and proto-Semitic languages. • Set in Victorian times and written in the King's English, a classic gaslamp fantasy British horror fiction atmosphere. • Classic strong prose, but that doesn't take away tempo. • Demons and Vampires with compelling and terrifying worldbuilding and lore behind them • Inspired by deep Saxon ghostly folklore. • Terrifyingly brooding, doom impendent and action-packed story structure that will never bore! Night Demon Excerpt from Chapter 11 by Stephen Wolberius She considered trying to make a run for it anyway until the unlit streetlamps to her left and right ignited. The next set of streetlamps lit up, and so did the next and the next until the stalker stood bathed in light — the lamps burned with such intensity that he shielded his eyes with an arm. All the lights except those next to him flickered and extinguished, basting the road in darkness, but then they all shone anew with even greater brightness. There stood the Lamplighter between Lilian and the stalker. He basked in light pale as snow and held his rodded wick to his side, which bore a smouldering ember at its tip. He made no sound, and even his black robe, which swayed gently and touched the snow at his feet, did so in serene stillness. The stalker stood as if frozen shut, one foot still in front of the other and in the middle of making a step before he turned and ran the way he came. The lights flickered, and with the third flicker, the Lamplighter, too, was gone. The lights remained out after that, and Lilian remained alone with nought but the mist’s embrace.
Book Synopsis Massive Resistance and Southern Womanhood by : Rebecca Brückmann
Download or read book Massive Resistance and Southern Womanhood written by Rebecca Brückmann and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Massive Resistance and Southern Womanhood offers a comparative sociocultural and spatial history of white supremacist women who were active in segregationist grassroots activism in Little Rock, New Orleans, and Charleston from the late 1940s to the late 1960s. Through her examination, Rebecca Brückmann uncovers and evaluates the roles, actions, self-understandings, and media representations of segregationist women in massive resistance in urban and metropolitan settings. Brückmann argues that white women were motivated by an everyday culture of white supremacy, and they created performative spaces for their segregationist agitation in the public sphere to legitimize their actions. While other studies of mass resistance have focused on maternalism, Brückmann shows that women’s invocation of motherhood was varied and primarily served as a tactical tool to continuously expand these women’s spaces. Through this examination she differentiates the circumstances, tactics, and representations used in the creation of performative spaces by working-class, middle-class, and elite women engaged in massive resistance. Brückmann focuses on the transgressive “street politics” of working-class female activists in Little Rock and New Orleans that contrasted with the more traditional political actions of segregationist, middle-class, and elite women in Charleston, who aligned white supremacist agitation with long-standing experience in conservative women’s clubs, including the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Working-class women’s groups chose consciously transgressive strategies, including violence, to elicit shock value and create states of emergency to further legitimize their actions and push for white supremacy.
Book Synopsis A Star Trek: The Next Generation: Time #2: A Time to Die by : John Vornholt
Download or read book A Star Trek: The Next Generation: Time #2: A Time to Die written by John Vornholt and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2004-03-02 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the cusp of their epic battle with Shinzon, many of Captain Jean-Luc Picard's long-time crew were heading for new assignments and new challenges. Among the changes were William Riker's promotion to captain and his new command, Riker's marriage to Counselor Deanna Troi, and Dr. Beverly Crusher's new career at Starfleet Medical. But the story of what set them on a path away from the Starship Enterprise has never been told. UNTIL NOW. It was supposed to be a mission of mercy, until the unthinkable occurred: the destruction of the U.S.S. Juno, killing all hands on board. Starfleet Command has unjustly assessed the actions of Captain Picard and the Enterprise crew during that fateful assignment to the Rashanar Battle Site -- the sector that saw one of the fiercest conflicts of the Dominion War, and which is now a hazardous interstellar graveyard filled with hundreds of devastated starships. While the court-ordered medical evaluation that relieved Picard of command is ongoing, there is growing speculation that his illustrious career may be coming to an end. To clear his former commander, acting captain William Riker and a demoralized skeleton crew agree to conduct a covert operation, and must venture the Starship Enterprise back into Rashanar to track down a mythical menace -- one that may already be responsible for the annihilation of countless fully armed starships. Unbridled hostility and the promise of death lurk at every turn, but they could never imagine that their only chance of survival may lie in the unexpected return of a long-absent friend....
