Book excerpt: Evidently, this book refers to Homo sapiens. The most successful species on earth today, also the worst plague that ever existed. We are stubbornly determined to grow without limit and destroy the planet in every conceivable way. Topics: climate change, overpopulation, evolution, actual and future dangers, limits to growth, etc., having science as the only probable salvation for the foretold coming worldwide catastrophe within this century. A reasonable way of stating a problem is also to present possible solutions. I propose an urgent and profound improvement of intelligence via a method of relation, a concept developed by the writer Luis Alberto Machado, the only assigned minister of intelligence development ever. I present a detailed description of a specific method of relation and proof of why this method might work to at least attenuate our coming global predicament. Science applied with improved intelligence and wisdom could still give the deluxe chimp a slim survival chance.

But when confronted by them, his capacity of wonder wakes up, and he dedicates in heart and mind to master it, or at least to try to become proficient on it. Once he was invited to watch a Jai Alai game. He became absolutely amazed by the speed of the ball, and the incredible mastery that the players displayed. How could they, apparently so easily, retain the ball in such a weird basket, and throw it back at the wall by means of a forceful and elegant motion? In that moment, he decided to try, to turn himself into a pelotari. Years later when playing a much competed championship game, he is struck by a heart attack. Rushed to a hospital, he undergoes heart surgery. Midway the risky medical intervention, he suddenly enters a bright tunnel and ends up in a beautiful place. He asks himself where could he be at. He listens a voice responding to his question, which, he learns, belongs to micron, a being from a very advanced civilization. Iturralde becomes interested in learning about the advances that they have acquired. Iturralde is able to chat with his departed family, scientists and other deceased personages that were of his interest on earth. At one moment, micron asks Iturralde if he wants to return to life, or stay there (Do you want to live, or pass?). Iturraldes option is to return to his family. micron, provides Iturralde with two irrefutable proofs that he, indeed, visited that location. When Iturralde, verifies that the proofs became true, he has the means to become an extremely famous and wealthy person. What he finally decides is unexpected, and is revealed at the end of the novel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skepticals in religion: watch out! Do not criticize anything about any religion. It is not of good taste; it is considered lack of respect and tact. Better turn apart a political party, science, a football team or anything else; but do not touch religion, even with the petal of a rose. What kind of privilege is that? Who provided it? It is not the case for this book. In it, I talk about the evil they all produce. Its essence is to forbid thinking. Faith and revelations cannot be doubted a bit, even existing ample evidence of its falsehood. From the hundreds of religions, which is the true one? Coincidentally and curiously, the one that each person happens to follow, by pure chance, of where he/she was born and which religion parents indoctrinated, nothing else. The eminent evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins comments, very appropiately: We are all atheists, but I believe in one god less than you. It results interesting to view the debates of the late Christopher Hitchens or Richard Dawkins versus fundamentalists who always bring faith or revelation and thus, never answer the questions asked or the mentioned commentaries. Homo sapiens has proved capable of great feats although his design shows carelessness, unless we believe in the evidence of evolution. If the damages to children were purely mental, that would be severe enough; but the vast amount of pederasts, such as Marcial Maciel, protected all his life by the pope J. P. II, who has been already canonized! Priests are much like politicians; they cover their backs, and they hardly ever get caught!

Book excerpt: Chimpanzees are our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom. They share 98 percent of our genetic makeup; yet despite our many commonalities, some aspects of chimp behavior remain a mystery to us. Biologists studying chimpanzees have made significant discoveries about our primate cousins, but the bulk of that knowledge has been gained relatively recently. We still have much to learn, and the need to learn is great; chimpanzees are highly endangered in the wild, and some primatologists believe that they are at the brink of extinction. In the hope that increased awareness will brighten the future for these great apes, Disneynature has released a film following in the footsteps of Earth, Oceans, and African Cats. That film is Chimpanzee. Chimpanzee: The Making of the Film chronicles the entire process of the movie’s creation, from the idea that the directors pitched to Disneynature, to the challenging filming that took place deep in the heart of Africa. Using their own words, the filmmakers discuss ground lost and ground won—both in the context of the chimpanzees’ territory wars, and the progress of the film itself. The filmmakers’ perseverance was rewarded when they happened upon the chimpanzees that would become the focal point of the movie: Oscar and Freddy. Orphaned at three, Oscar had little chance of surviving without a mother to nurse him and teach him to sustain himself. So it was quite surprising when the alpha male of the group, Freddy, adopted the baby and began taking care of him. The heartwarming and remarkable relationship between these chimpanzees is captured within this book through anecdotes told by the filmmakers and stunning photographs taken in the Taï forest. Their story, as well as the story of the film’s production, will prompt both laughter and tears, so make sure to grab a hanky!

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Now Elizabeth Hess’s unforgettable biography is the inspiration for Project Nim, a riveting new documentary directed by James Marsh and produced by Simon Chinn, the Oscar-winning team known for Man on Wire. Hess, a consultant on the film, says, “Getting a call from James Marsh and Simon Chinn is an author’s dream. Project Nim is nothing short of amazing.” Could an adorable chimpanzee raised from infancy by a human family bridge the gap between species—and change the way we think about the boundaries between the animal and human worlds? Here is the strange and moving account of an experiment intended to answer just those questions, and the astonishing biography of the chimp who was chosen to see it through. Dubbed Project Nim, the experiment was the brainchild of Herbert S. Terrace, a psychologist at Columbia University. His goal was to teach a chimpanzee American Sign Language in order to refute Noam Chomsky’s assertion that language is an exclusively human trait. Nim Chimpsky, the baby chimp at the center of this ambitious, potentially groundbreaking study, was “adopted” by one of Dr. Terrace’s graduate students and brought home to live with her and her large family in their elegant brownstone on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. At first Nim’s progress in learning ASL and adapting to his new environment exceeded all expectations. His charm, mischievous sense of humor, and keen, sometimes shrewdly manipulative understanding of human nature endeared him to everyone he met, and even led to guest appearances on Sesame Street, where he was meant to model good behavior for toddlers. But no one had thought through the long-term consequences of raising a chimp in the human world, and when funding for the study ran out, Nim’s problems began. Over the next two decades, exiled from the people he loved, Nim was rotated in and out of various facilities. It would be a long time before this chimp who had been brought up to identify with his human caretakers had another opportunity to blow out the candles on a cake celebrating his birthday. No matter where he was sent, however, Nim’s hard-earned ability to converse with humans would prove to be his salvation, protecting him from the fate of many of his peers. Drawing on interviews with the people who lived with Nim, diapered him, dressed him, taught him, and loved him, Elizabeth Hess weaves an unforgettable tale of an extraordinary and charismatic creature. His story will move and entertain at the same time that it challenges us to ask what it means to be human, and what we owe to the animals who so enrich our lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A magnificent new history of America told through 101 treasures from the Smithsonian’s collections. The Deluxe Edition features eight videos that go behind the scenes at the Smithsonian for a closer look at some of the book’s most important objects, hosted by author and curator Richard Kurin. The Smithsonian Institution is America’s largest and most cherished repository for the objects that define our common heritage. Richard Kurin, its Under Secretary for History, Art, and Culture, has for decades served as a driving force in the effort of our national museums to tell America’s whole story. This book is the culmination of a broad effort, led by Kurin and involving all the Smithsonian’s museums and more than a hundred of its top scholars and curators, to select a set of objects that could collectively represent the American experience. Strong deliberation honed literally millions of possibilities down to a careful selection of 101 remarkable objects that do justice to the history of our bountiful land and its people. That history begins with remains from the earliest years of the pre-Columbian continent and relics of the American Revolution and Civil War. It includes the inventions of the industrial revolution, artifacts of the Depression, World War II and cold war eras; icons of pop culture and of the Civil Rights movements as well as the objects that now symbolize the digital age and the first years of the new millennium. Each entry pairs the fascinating history of each object with the place it has come to occupy in our national memory. Kurin sheds new light on familiar objects like the Star-Spangled Banner and Abraham Lincoln’s stovepipe hat, Dorothy’s ruby slippers and Julia Child’s kitchen, the giant pandas and the space shuttle Discovery, including the often astonishing tales of how each made its way into the Smithsonian. Other objects, like the suffragists’ “Great Demand” banner and the Tuskegee flyer, will be eye-opening new discoveries for many, but no less evocative of the most poignant and important moments of American history. Others, like Sitting Bull’s ledger, Cesar Chavez’s union jacket, and the Enola Gay bomber, illustrate difficult chapters in the nation’s history. Kurin also includes behind-the-scenes insight into controversies arising from their exhibition at the Smithsonian. In Kurin’s hands these marvelous objects come to vivid life, awakening a deep and tactile connection with our nation’s history. A beautiful treasure in its own right, The Smithsonian’s History of America in 101 Objects is an incomparable journey through America’s collective memory, and a celebration of the resilient power of objects to illustrate who we are as a people.

Book excerpt: The serious cook is always delighted to hear the words ''superb" and "delicious" or even an occasional "bravo," but the ultimate compliment received at any table is a question: "May I have a copy of your recipe?" Whether it's Cream-Filled Crêpes Flamed in Cointreau or Grilled Knockwursts with Honey Mustard, if your audience likes the dish well enough to ask for the recipe, then it's a success. Fearless Cooking for Company includes ten years' worth of Michele Evans' "most requested" recipes, more than 300 of them, and they are truly special. Most are her own, but there are also contributions from family, friends, and chefs in restaurants around the world who have generously shared their secrets. The recipes offer a wide range of choices for every course and every taste, from instant dishes made from fresh and some prepared foods to elaborate presentations that require time and totally fresh ingredients. There are special sections on cooking for crowds, with recipes and menus that serve 12 or 24 people any time of the year. All entrées in the book are accompanied by menu suggestions, and some basic recipes are included to remind the reader of important techniques, procedures, and timing. Organization is as important to the home cook as it is to the chef in the largest restaurant kitchen, and it is one of the critical keys to good cooking and elegant, anxiety-free entertaining. A chapter called Mise en Place—putting everything in its place—suggests ways of organizing the preparation of a recipe in the most efficient manner possible. Whether you entertain every night of the week or cook only when the mood strikes you, the recipes in Fearless Cooking for Company will become part of your own treasured collection—recipes that you will be asked for again and again and that you will pass on to others with pleasure.

Book excerpt: In between highbrow and lowbrow, there’s Unabrow. "Take the cast of ‘Bridesmaids,’ add a dash of pre-pubescent Eugene Levy, and you have the humor stylings of Una LaMarche."—Ann Imig, founder of Listen to Your Mother As a girl, Una LaMarche was as smart as she was awkward. She was blessed with a precocious intellect, a love of all things pop culture, and eyebrows bushier than Frida Kahlo’s. Adversity made her stronger...and funnier. In Unabrow, Una shares the cringe-inducing lessons she’s learned from a life as a late bloomer, including the seven deadly sins of DIY bangs, how not to make your own jorts, and how to handle pregnancy, plucking, and the rites of passage during which your own body is your worst frenemy. For readers who loved Let’s Pretend This Never Happened and for fans of Mindy Kaling, Tina Fey, and Amy Schumer, Unabrow is the book June Cleaver would have written if she spent more time drinking and less time vacuuming.
