Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Moving City is a rich and intimate account of urban transformation told through the story of Delhi's Metro, a massive infrastructure project that is reshaping the city's social and urban landscapes. Ethnographic vignettes introduce the feel and form of the Metro and let readers experience the city, scene by scene, stop by stop, as if they, too, have come along for the ride. Laying bare the radical possibilities and concretized inequalities of the Metro, and how people live with and through its built environment, this is a story of women and men on the move, the nature of Indian aspiration, and what it takes morally and materially to sustain urban life. Through exquisite prose, Rashmi Sadana transports the reader to a city shaped by both its Metro and those who depend on it, revealing a perspective on Delhi unlike any other.

Book excerpt: My understanding of this ferocious, restless, relentless metropolis is that each of us who lives in this city carries a unique, if virtual, Delhi inside our heads.' Independence, four million refugees from Pakistan and the overwhelming presence of visible and invisible power that flows from New Delhi being the capital have transformed it from the unruffled imperial town it once was to the fearsome metropolis it is today. And yet, says Ranjana Sengupta, this largely unloved city deserves to be loved. Delhi is home to the most diverse population of any city in the country. The unceasing influx of migrants has unleashed new urban architectures of opulence and deprivation. Different groups have set up their own, different universes, and these manage to coexist, not unhappily. And somewhere between the futurist Gurgaon skyline and the proliferating slums, alongside the march of the Metro and the refurbishment of Khan Market, lie Delhi's unsung sagas—the memories, the passions and the unspoken expectation that the city will change lives. Sengupta illustrates how Delhi is essentially the creation of refugees of all kinds, from those fleeing plundered homes within and across the border to the adventurers who have flocked to the city for the greater opportunities of employment or simply to be close to the hub of political power. The newer Delhi, she says, in its turn gained from the accumulated and diverse talent and capital it acquired from these people, although haphazard development poses a great danger to it. Delhi Metropolitan tracks the changes from the time 'going to CP' was almost the only leisure activity for the middle class, looks at the subtle reinventions of government colonies and the shining new suburbs, and inspects the footprints of 'Punjabification'. Have all these actually managed to colonize this extravagant, indefinable and unlikely city? In a work of immense detail, at once informed and entertaining, Ranjana Sengupta proffers an answer.

Book excerpt: Karmayogi is the dramatic and inspiring story of E. Sreedharan, the much-admired engineer and technocrat who won accolades for finishing the Delhi Metro project within budget and on time, in the face of severe constraints. Known for his efficiency and discipline and regarded the world over for his productivity standards, Sreedharan has, surprisingly, never spent more than the eight-hour workday in office. This fascinating book looks back on an extraordinary career full of sterling achievements-Sreedharan's years with the Railways, the building of the Kolkata Metro and the Konkan Railway, followed by the Delhi Metro, and the many metro projects he is involved with now. Translated from a bestselling biography in Malayalam, this is the uplifting story of a very private person who has become an icon of modern India because of his uncompromising work ethic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking stock of the urban transport scenario in Indian cities, this is the first full-length study of the metro rail system in India. In recent times the metro rail has come up as a favoured alternative of mass transport in urban spaces faced with growing population, heightened vehicular traffic, and increased pollution. Using data, analysis, and first-hand information, this book tells the story of metro rail as proposed and undertaken across Indiafrom Kolkata in the east and Mumbai in the west to Delhi and Jaipur in the north and Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Kochi in the south. Focusing on the complexities of project planning and contrasting the Indian experience with those of its global counterparts, this volume distils important lessons for future infrastructure projects. While the metro rail system has considerably improved inter-city connectivity, the metro story in India is an ongoing one. With a Foreword by E. Sreedharan setting the stage, this volume will appeal to anybody keen to know more about urban transport in India, as well as policymakers, management professionals, and students and researchers of economics and business studies.

Book excerpt: Terror is defined as a state of intense or overwhelming fear. Terrorism is defined as the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion. The term terrorism was first coined in the 1790s to refer to the terror used during the French Revolution by the revolutionaries against their opponents. As time went by it then gradually began to be used to describe the use of any violent force by a state against domestic opponents to the more recent-day definitions of being considered as violence aimed at governments to dictate their policies, a means for threatening states into submission, or overthrow an existing regime. India has been victim to the scourge of terrorism for more than four decades with activities involving killings, massacres, and bombings against the nation and its people having been carried out as recently as Pulwana (2019). Out of the more than 100 attacks of terrorism since the 1980s, the six attacks that truly shook the soul of India were: *1993 Bombay Blasts- 260 people killed and more than 700 injured. *2001 Parliament Attack-9 policemen and a parliament staffer killed. *2006 Mumbai Train Bombing- 209 people killed and more than 700 injured.*2008 26/11 Mumbai attack-174 people killed and more than 300 wounded. *2016 Uri Attack- 18 soldiers killed in an attack on the Indian Army's 12 Brigade headquarters. *2019 Pulwama Attack- 44 Central Reserve Police Force personnel killed and 20 injured in an attack on the police convoy. *One such dreaded act of terrorism took place on the 29th of December 2011 sending shudders across the mighty nation of India, and the world. Islamic Religious Terrorists Hijack the Delhi-Gurgaon Metro train and threaten to kill all 1001 passengers on board if their demands are not met within the 12-hour deadline. The government of India is in no mood to relent since seeing as the demands seek the release of three dreaded terrorists who had acted against the Nation. At the same time, the government is acutely aware that they have the moral responsibility for the lives of its trapped citizens. National Security Adviser Robin India is entrusted with the task of negotiations that could lead to freeing the hostages. Can he secure their release through mere dialogue? Should he adopt another process to end the stalemate - a process that would weigh heavily on the conscience of the nation for all times to come? A murky situation that demanded a choice to be made--a choice---between Plan-A or Plan-B. Attempt a rescue without firing a single shot or retain the honor of the nation at all costs? Should they seek the help of foreign agencies, or should they go it on their own? Time certainly was not on their side, nor that of the hostages. A first of its kind situation wherein terrorists, on a "Do or Die" mission, managed to take command of a Metro train with no easy plan of deliverance available to the authorities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delhi is much more than just the capital of India. It is a city with an amazing history. So many times, it has been the major city or capital of India, from the earliest Mahabharata days to the Rajputs to the Delhi Sultanate to the Mughals to the British. Each time the new rulers left their mark on the city. As a result, now we have a Delhi which has the mark of at least seven or eight different historical cities, if not more. In this book, we review the different historical cities of Delhi. We use the Delhi metro, which is currently probably the best developed metro in India, as the preferred means of transport to see the sights of the seven cities of Delhi. We hope that this short guide will help the reader the experience a little bit of what Delhi is all about, its people and its history. In this book, we do not cover all the historical sites or attractions of Delhi, such as the many modern museums, markets and other attractions. Rather, we focus on the sites that form part of the historical cities of Delhi and those that are located within the historical boundaries of those cities. This book was born out of many travels and exploratory walks made by the authors in Delhi, where they live.

Book excerpt: Modern love has new colours, and true love, to be honest, is on the decline. With the passage of time, It has been turning in a new direction. In the metropolitan cities, it is no more a matter of heart. People are loving with a perfect plan that works in their favour. Students have given it a new name, friendship. They don’t want their love to be called something else. For some boys and girls it has become commercial. Love in Delhi Metro is a satire on the young generation living in the metropolitan cities. Boys and girls pretend to love each other, but that’s not the case. There are no feelings in them. They have some purpose under their sleeves. Boys long for romance while girls want only shopping at any cost. The story deals with this theme. Both characters have their set goals, especially the girl. She has to buy clothes, and therefore she makes him believe that she has a crush on him. But the boy has no such a target. It is a different matter that he engages in kissing her and later on becomes errotic. The girl doesn’t offer any resistance. Actually, she is on a mission. The book highlights this type of love in a crystal clear way. I’m sure the readers will like it will give them a clear picture of what has been happening in the name of love in Delhi.

Book excerpt: A love letter to Paris and a meditation on how it has changed in two decades, evolving from the twentieth century into the twenty-first, from analog to digital. Your telephone is precious. It may be envied. We recommend vigilance when using it in public. --Paris bus public notice In fall 2014 Lauren Elkin began keeping a diary of her bus commutes in the Notes app on her iPhone 5c, writing down the interesting things and people she saw in a Perecquian homage to Bus Lines 91 and 92, which she took from her apartment in the 5th Arrondissement to her teaching job in the 7th. Reading the notice, she decided to be vigilant when using her phone: she would carry out a public transport vigil, using it to take in the world around her and notice all the things she would miss if she continued using it the way she had been, the way everyone does--to surf the web, check social media, maintain her daily sense of self through digital interaction. Her goal became to observe the world through the screen of her phone, rather than using her phone to distract from the world. During the course of that academic year, the Charlie Hebdo attacks occurred and Elkin had an ectopic pregnancy, requiring emergency surgery. At that point, her diary of dailiness became a study of the counterpoint between the everyday and the Event, mediated through early twenty-first century technology, and observed from the height of a bus seat. No. 91/92 is a love letter to Paris, and a meditation on how it has changed in the two decades the author has lived there, evolving from the twentieth century into the twenty-first, from analog to digital.
