Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dan Bautista thought that moving to the California Coast meant an easy life and endless summers. He believed the power of the Gospels conquered all because he'd never seen the fearsome transformative power of raw violence. He thought joining the police force would bring peace to his life and justice to his community. Nothing happened as planned. He couldn't have imagined what did happen. Weapons of Our Warfare reveals the inconvenience of knowing people. Really knowing them. It's about the beautiful complexity we find in every encounter we give a chance to mature. The riddle of violence and the need sometimes to do evil for the ultimate good, is revealed in this story inspired by real people the author has come to know and love. These are real people whose actions go far beyond the typical stereotypes, into the realm of heroism, and insensate evil, often within the same person. Pastors, street cops, investigators, drug dealers, informants, and murderers. Bad guys and good guys wrapped in one skin. People who've taken a stance, and find others on the same side of their line, unsure how they got there, even less sure how others they love got on the other side. And through it all, the worst brings out the best they have. The best any of us ever have. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Born in Kalibo, Aklan, Philippines, Ed Delfin moved to America as a teenager. He has been a law enforcement professional for almost twenty years. Ed has extensive experience in narcotics interdiction, gang investigations, and cold-case homicides. Currently, he is an Inspector with the Santa Cruz County District Attorney's Office. Ed has a degree in business, a master's degree in legal studies from Monterey College of Law, and a graduate of the FBI National Academy. A licensed minister with the Assemblies of God, Ed married his college sweetheart. They live in the heart of California's Central Coast with their two children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book records the emergence and institutionalization of social inequality in San Jose, a pioneer farming village located on Palawan Island in the Philippines. Early chapters reconstruct the historical circumstances surrounding San Jose's settlement and growth under conditions of relative equality of opportunity. The community's development is examined in detail through the experiences of eight migrant farmers, all self-made men some conspicuous successes, others conspicuous failures. Comparing and evaluating the causes of pioneers' successes and failures, Professor Eder stresses that the origins of inequality in San Jose depended less upon the individuals' time of arrival or amounts of starting capital or other such factors than it did upon personal differences. Social inequality, for the most part, had its basis in a level of motivation and in a kind of 'on-the-job competence' that some men and women brought to the frontier and others did not.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex can be an oppressive force, a tool to shame, divide, and control a population. But it can also be a force for change, for the legal and physical challenge of inequity and injustice. In West of Sex, Pablo Mitchell uses court transcripts and criminal cases to provide the first coherent picture of Mexican-American sexuality at the turn of the twentieth century, and a truly revelatory look at sexual identity in the borderlands. As Mexicans faced a rising tide of racial intolerance in the American West, some found cracks in the legal system that enabled them to assert their rights as full citizens, despite institutional hostility. In these chapters, Mitchell offers a rare glimpse into the inner workings of ethnicity and power in the United States, placing ordinary Mexican women and men at the center of the story of American sex, colonialism, and belonging. Other chapters discuss topics like prostitution, same-sex intimacy, sexual violence, interracial romance, and marriage with an impressive level of detail and complexity. Written in vivid and accessible prose, West of Sex offers readers a new vision of sex and race in American history.

It provides an overview of the UNESCO procedure for the examination of communications alleging violations of human rights in UNESCO’s fields of competence - education, science, culture, communication and information. For the first time since the establishment of this procedure, all cases submitted to the Committee on Conventions and Recommendations from 1978 to 1988 which have been considered by the Committee, a total of more 350 cases concerning 60 States altogether, are being made public. The Committee operates under a procedure that stipulates confidentiality for 20 years. The cases are presented in chronological order and each includes a summary of facts as well as the Committee's discussion and decision. Tables of cases and statistics are included. This book is designed for all those who are concerned about and interested in human rights primarily. It will be a useful and practical tool for students, law professors, academics, human rights experts and human rights activists, and will be accessible to the general public involved in human rights and humanitarian affairs. It aims to provide the reader with a better understanding of UNESCO’s role in the protection of human rights through discreet action and consultation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Westerners and Americans in particular, Philippine culture is deceptively familiar. Vestiges of Spanish and American colonial culture, as well as contemporary American media, have created resonances for identifying American culture in Philippine culture. This book guides the reader in re-examining these assumptions of sameness. By taking an unfamiliar text of a noted writer of Tagalog fiction, this study restores the sense of wonder in experiencing Tagalog culture on its own terms rather than by tastes dictated from the outside. The book also examines the broader Tagalog traditions in which the writer, Amado Hernandez, wrote.
