Book excerpt: "It's hard not to love the endearingly funny, sketchbook journal-style autobiographical comics of Liz Prince. ... If you don't feel good about life (or comics) after reading Liz's stuff your heart is a black hole of weirdness." -- David Paggi & Kiel Phegley, Wizard's Indie Jones DELAYED REPLAYS, the second comics collection from Ignatz Award winner Liz Prince (WILL YOU STILL LOVE ME IF I WET THE BED?), further explores how one incredibly self-centered twenty-something finds contentment in her everyday life. From the amusing to the banal, Liz's comics are slice-of-life at its best, or if not best, at least most relatable. These strips could easily find their home in many alternative weekly papers, but Liz is too lazy to post them anywhere but her live journal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sebastian Pape discusses two different scenarios for authentication. On the one hand, users cannot trust their devices and nevertheless want to be able to do secure authentication. On the other hand, users may not want to be tracked while their service provider does not want them to share their credentials. Many users may not be able to determine whether their device is trustworthy, i.e. it might contain malware. One solution is to use visual cryptography for authentication. The author generalizes this concept to human decipherable encryption schemes and establishes a relationship to CAPTCHAS. He proposes a new security model and presents the first visual encryption scheme which makes use of noise to complicate the adversary's task. To prevent service providers from keeping their users under surveillance, anonymous credentials may be used. However, sometimes it is desirable to prevent the users from sharing their credentials. The author compares existing approaches based on non-transferable anonymous credentials and proposes an approach which combines biometrics and smartcards.

Book excerpt: Japanese Role-playing Games: Genre, Representation, and Liminality in the JRPG examines the origins, boundaries, and transnational effects of the genre, addressing significant formal elements as well as narrative themes, character construction, and player involvement. Contributors from Japan, Europe, North America, and Australia employ a variety of theoretical approaches to analyze popular game series and individual titles, introducing an English-speaking audience to Japanese video game scholarship while also extending postcolonial and philosophical readings to the Japanese game text. In a three-pronged approach, the collection uses these analyses to look at genre, representation, and liminality, engaging with a multitude of concepts including stereotypes, intersectionality, and the political and social effects of JRPGs on players and industry conventions. Broadly, this collection considers JRPGs as networked systems, including evolved iterations of MMORPGs and card collecting “social games” for mobile devices. Scholars of media studies, game studies, Asian studies, and Japanese culture will find this book particularly useful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fall is a play collaboratively written by the original cast as a reaction to and reflection on the South African student protests in 2015 and part of 2016. The #RhodesMustFall and subsequent student-led movements in South Africa alerted the country and the world to the latent ongoing issues brought about by colonialism and apartheid in South Africa. Students were also protesting about the lack of change in the way black Africans were educated and treated at South African universities more than two decades after the end of white-minority rule. They were also angry about fee increases, which disproportionately affected black students, in a country of continued extreme income inequality. The Fall details the experiences of seven students within this movement and how they deal with their traumas, while still moving towards activism for a free decolonised education. This powerful ensemble piece goes to the heart of how race, class, gender, power and history's voices intersect. It premiered at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town, toured to other venues in South Africa and to the Edinburgh Festival and the Royal Court Theatre, London. It was awarded The Stage Cast Award and a Scotsman Fringe First award in Edinburgh, and was described in The Stage as:"a truly ensemble production which has both teeth and heart. And one which stands for student revolt around the world and down the ages."

Book excerpt: Liveness is a persistent and much-debated concept in media studies. Until recently, it was associated primarily with broadcast media, and television in particular. However, the emergence of social media has brought new forms of liveness into effect. These forms challenge common assumptions about and perspectives on liveness, provoking a revisiting of the concept. In this book, Karin van Es develops a comprehensive understanding of liveness today, and clarifies the stakes surrounding the category of the live. She argues that liveness is the product of a dynamic interaction between media institutions, technologies and users. In doing so, she challenges earlier conceptions of the notion, which tended to focus on either one of these contributors to its construction. By analyzing the live in four different cases a live streaming platform, an online music collaboration website, an example of social TV, and a social networking site van Es explores the operation of the category and pinpoints the conditions under which it comes into being. The analysis is the starting point for a broader reflection on the relation between broadcast and social media.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This cutting-edge resource provides a comprehensive treatment of applying delay-tolerant networking (DTN) principles to satellite-based network communications. Detailed models and analytical tools are used to evaluate performance and provide guidance in the field. This book presents the state-of-the-art in existing on-board and ground technologies that support satellite applications, such as communications protocols, algorithms, and security procedures. Readers gain key insight into the fundamental concepts of DTN applied to satellite networks (DTSNs) and case studies are provided. This book presents an authoritative introduction to the methods for computing metrics for satellite network modeling. Satellite communications are examined, including satellite links, communication protocols, and distributed multiple access schemes, such as time division, code division, and frequency division. This book focuses on ways in which DTN might make terrestrial communication and observation via earth orbiting satellites less expensive and more robust. The fundamental concepts and analysis of the Ring Road Architecture are explored. Unique analyses on the motivating factors of using Inter-Satellite Links (ISL) to form networks in disruptive environments in space are discussed. This book explores the limits of larger and complex DTSNs as the number of satellites increase and different orbital formations become possible. As satellite networks become larger in upcoming years this book provides a guide for readers to stay informed about standard protocols such as DTN that will allow seamless interoperation, cost reduction, and risk mitigation.
