Book excerpt: The mode II delamination fracture toughness of a ductile and a brittle unidirectional graphite/epoxy composite has been studied using the end-notched flexure (ENF) test and the end-loaded split laminate (ELS) test. The stress field in the vicinity of the crack tip of a split laminate beam under mode I and mode II (ELS test) conditions has been determined by means of a finite-element analysis. Also, the micromechanics of mode II fracture have been studied during in situ and postmortem observations of the fracture process. Both the ENF and ELS tests give similar values for GIIc. However, because elastic material behavior is assumed in the analysis, the GIIc results for a ductile composite are somewhat uncertain because permanent deformation is observed. The ELS test provides a pure shear stress state in the vicinity of the crack tip. The formation of hackles in composites made with brittle resins provides a more tortuous path for the crack leading to an increased resistance to delamination under mode II conditions compared to mode I. However, extensive resin deformation and yielding play a more significant role in the fracture resistance for mode II loading of composites made using a rubber-toughened epoxy.

It is expedient, to make thin walled composite rods, plates, and shells from such materials. Plates can be made by bonding a set of unidirectional thin fiber layers, Fig.l.l. Such plates are orthotropic, as a rule. A random short-fiber composite is shown in Fig. 1.2. Fiber-reinforced composites are widely used in thin-walled aircraft structures because of their specific high strength. For example, the graphite-epoxy composite is characterized by a unidirectional tensile strength of 1.4 GPa while the density is 1.6 Mg/rrt? . Therefore, low-velocity impacts and defects in manufacturing lead to local delamination. (b) Linear Problems of Delamination Buckling Delamination can significantly reduce the compressive strength and stiffness of the laminate. Local delamination can be considered as a crack in the bond. Under buckling there appears a high interlaminate stress at the crack edge that leads to a spreading of the crack. Delamination growth can lead to structural instability.

Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to determine the effects of loading rate on interlaminar fracture toughness of T300/F-185 graphite/epoxy composite, having an elastomer-modified epoxy resin matrix. Mode I interlaminar fracture was investigated by means of uniform width and width-tapered double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens. Hinged tabs were used to insure unrestrained rotation at the free ends. Specimens were loaded at quasi-static deflection rates of up to 8.5 mm/s (20 in./min) corresponding to crack extension rates of up to 21 mm/s (49.6 in./min). Crack extension was monitored by means of strain gages mounted on the surface of the specimen. Continuous records were obtained of load, deflection, and crack extension for determination of the strain energy release rate. The latter was calculated by means of the area method and beam analysis method, and expressed as a power law of the crack extension velocity. Results indicate that the strain energy release rate decreases with crack velocity by over 20% over three decades of crack velocity.

Book excerpt: The critical strain energy release rates for interlaminar fracture of unidirectional graphite/epoxy, both from a sharp notch and as a function of crack extension, were determined experimentally for combined tensile/shear loadings. Based on well-founded compliance techniques, a substantial database was generated over the temperature range -50°C to 100°C for both dry and moisture-saturated states. The fracture energy of the unreinforced epoxy matrix material was also measured. Initiation energies for delamination increased as the proportion of shear loading increased and as the temperature was lowered but were insensitive to moisture content. The fracture resistance to crack extension increased under tensile dominated loadings with both temperature and moisture content but remained constant for high shear loadings. The applicability of various mixed-mode fracture criteria to both the present data and to available literature data is examined. The Wu fracture model was modified to take into account plane strain conditions appropriate to delamination. Crack growth resistance behavior is discussed in terms of the micromechanisms occurring close to the crack tip.

Static tension and tension-tension fatigue tests were conducted on two different layups. Damage onset, accumulation, and residual properties were measured. Matrix cracking was shown to have a considerable influence on residual stiffness of glass epoxy laminates, and could be predicted reasonably well for cracks in 90 deg plies using a simple shear lag analysis. A fracture mechanics analysis for the strain energy release rate associated with 90 deg ply matrix crack formation was developed and was shown to correlate the onset of 90 deg ply cracks in different laminates. The linear degradation of laminate modulus with delamination area, previously observed for graphite epoxy laminates, was predicted for glass epoxy laminates using a simple rule of mixtures analysis. The strain energy release rate associated with edge delamination formation under static and cyclic loading was difficult to analyze because of the presence of several contemporary damage phenomena. Hinged tabs were used to insure unrestrained rotation at the free ends. Specimens were loaded at quasi-static deflection rates of up to 8.5 mm/s (20 in./min) corresponding to crack extension rates of over 51 mm/s (2 in./s). Crack extension was monitored by means of strain gages mounted on the surface of the specimen, or a conductive-paint circuit attached to the edge of the DCB specimen. Continuous records were obtained of load, deflection, and crack extension for determination of the strain energy release rate. The latter was expressed as a power law of the crack extension velocity. Results indicate that the strain energy release rate increases with crack velocity by up to 28% for the range of rates considered here.
