Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognizing that the theory of group representations is fundamental to several areas of science and mathematics — including particle physics, crystallography, and group theory — the National Bureau of Standards published this basic but complete exposition of the subject in 1968 in their Applied Mathematics Series. The most significant facts about group representation are developed in an accessible manner, requiring only a familiarity with classical matrix theory. The treatment is rendered self-contained with a series of concise Appendixes that explore elements of the theory of algebraic numbers. Subjects include representations of arbitrary groups, representations of finite groups, multiplication of representations, and bounded representations and Weyl's theorem. All of the important elementary results are featured, a number of advanced topics are discussed, and several special representations are worked out in detail. 1968 edition.

This book was released on 1971 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This symposium, on Representation Theory of Finite Groups and Related Topics, was held in conjunction with a sectional meeting of the American Mathematical Society, and in honor of professor Richard Brauer. Dr. Brauer's fundamental work in representation theory is at the heart of many further developments in the topic. These proceedings contain the articles of participants, based on their symposium presentations, and indicate the scope of current research in representation theory.

This book was released on 1993-04-20 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers may find themselves confronted with proteases, either because they play an essential role in a particular process they are studying, or because they interfere with that process. In either case they may need to investigate or inhibit the proteolytic activity. Others may wish to use proteolytic enzymes as laboratory tools. This book has been written with these investigators in mind and includes assay methods using natural and artificial substrates, genetic-based assays, and strategies for the inhibition, purification and crystallization of proteases. In selected chapters the use of proteolytic enzymes to analyze proteins, segregate cells or in peptide synthesis is covered.

This book was released on 2022-11-29 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph adopts an operational and functional analytic approach to the following problem: given a short exact sequence (group extension) 1 → N → G → H → 1 of finite groups, describe the irreducible representations of G by means of the structure of the group extension. This problem has attracted many mathematicians, including I. Schur, A.H. Clifford, and G. Mackey and, more recently, M. Isaacs, B. Huppert, Y.G. Berkovich & E.M. Zhmud, and J.M.G. Fell & R.S. Doran. The main topics are, on the one hand, Clifford Theory and the Little Group Method (of Mackey and Wigner) for induced representations, and, on the other hand, Kirillov’s Orbit Method (for step-2 nilpotent groups of odd order) which establishes a natural and powerful correspondence between Lie rings and nilpotent groups. As an application, a detailed description is given of the representation theory of the alternating groups, of metacyclic, quaternionic, dihedral groups, and of the (finite) Heisenberg group. The Little Group Method may be applied if and only if a suitable unitary 2-cocycle (the Mackey obstruction) is trivial. To overcome this obstacle, (unitary) projective representations are introduced and corresponding Mackey and Clifford theories are developed. The commutant of an induced representation and the relative Hecke algebra is also examined. Finally, there is a comprehensive exposition of the theory of projective representations for finite Abelian groups which is applied to obtain a complete description of the irreducible representations of finite metabelian groups of odd order.
