Jessamyn has escaped Earth with food for her starving world, but her troubles are just beginning. She must rebuild her life without Pavel, the young Terran whose kiss haunts her. Her success is further tainted by the loss of her beloved brother. Ethan disabled the deadly lasers orbiting Mars, but this has created a fervor to re-open trade with Earth which Jess knows would be disastrous. Add into the mix a secret which could launch an interplanetary war, and Jess finds herself at the center of an intrigue where, in order to save the world she loves, she must defy it. The Saving Mars series is a coming-of-age science fiction adventure series set in a dystopian future where colonization on Mars has survived for centuries without any contact with Earth, until now.
Book Synopsis Ancient Supplication by : Fred Naiden
Download or read book Ancient Supplication written by Fred Naiden and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-07-20 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book-length treatment of supplication, an important social practice in ancient Mediterranean civilizations. Despite the importance of supplication, it has received little attention, and no previous study has explored so many aspects of the practice. Naiden investigates the varied gestures made by the supplicants, the types of requests they make, the arguments used in defense of their requests, and the role of the supplicandus, who evaluates and decides whether to fulfill the requests. Varied and abundant sources invite comparison between the societies of Greece and Rome and also among literary genres. Additionally, Naiden formulates an analysis of the ritual in its legal and political contexts. In constructing this rich and thorough study, Naiden considered over 800 acts of supplication from Greek, Hebrew, and Roman literature, art, and scientific sources. 30 illustrations and a map of the relevant locations accompany the text.

Book Synopsis Dilemmas of Allyship by : Zachary V. Sunderman
Download or read book Dilemmas of Allyship written by Zachary V. Sunderman and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dilemmas of Allyship investigates the political phenomenon of social justice allyship—in the form of white anti-racism—from a novel perspective. The book argues that 21st-century allyship is best understood as a set of socially mediated personal problems and challenges, and that these problems and challenges furnish the material with which many allies’ identities are formed. Through an analysis of in-depth interviews with white American anti-racist activists, Dilemmas of Allyship provides a picture of the ambivalent struggles with which allies grapple, tracing the “theoretically irreducible” contradictions they regularly encounter. These contradictions, or dilemmas, are central to the ongoing project of many white activists’ allyship, presenting them again and again with challenges that test their authenticity and commitment. The book also investigates how these same dilemmas can become “practically reducible” through a set of mitigating factors and strategies that intervene in and redefine allyship crises. Taken together, these analyses present a picture of allyship rarely seen: one of a lifestyle intrinsically marked by the kinds of challenges people typically avoid. Dilemmas of Allyship takes allies on their own terms, paying attention to the true ambivalence of their struggles, refusing to reduce these experiences to mere success or failure. As a result, it is able to contribute to discussions of identity politics and “white fragility” by presenting a clear picture of the existential stakes of allyship. With this picture in hand, we can better appreciate what challenges exist within the 21st-century movement for racial justice—and we can also learn something more fundamental about what it means to be a person in a contested, conflictual social world.

Book excerpt: Many books have been written for those who have been abused, but what about those who have been abusive? Abusive and controlling behaviors are sadly common in the U.S. and all over the world. There is plenty of support for people who need to get free of abuse, but very few books have been written for people who struggle with being abusive and controlling themselves. Becoming Allies fills that gap. This comprehensive book, the first of its kind, draws on the author’s three decades of experience in the field of intimate partner violence working with thousands of people who have been abusive. It presents for the first time the best practices of specialized abuse-prevention programs from around the country. Becoming Allies identifies and examines abusive and controlling behaviors, explains the underlying beliefs that drive them, and teaches specific, concrete techniques for changing them. It is nothing short of a lifeline for people who want to stop their abusive and controlling behaviors and improve their relationships with themselves, their partners, and their loved ones.
