Book Synopsis The Deficit Myth by : Stephanie Kelton
Download or read book The Deficit Myth written by Stephanie Kelton and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Bestseller The leading thinker and most visible public advocate of modern monetary theory -- the freshest and most important idea about economics in decades -- delivers a radically different, bold, new understanding for how to build a just and prosperous society. Stephanie Kelton's brilliant exploration of modern monetary theory (MMT) dramatically changes our understanding of how we can best deal with crucial issues ranging from poverty and inequality to creating jobs, expanding health care coverage, climate change, and building resilient infrastructure. Any ambitious proposal, however, inevitably runs into the buzz saw of how to find the money to pay for it, rooted in myths about deficits that are hobbling us as a country. Kelton busts through the myths that prevent us from taking action: that the federal government should budget like a household, that deficits will harm the next generation, crowd out private investment, and undermine long-term growth, and that entitlements are propelling us toward a grave fiscal crisis. MMT, as Kelton shows, shifts the terrain from narrow budgetary questions to one of broader economic and social benefits. With its important new ways of understanding money, taxes, and the critical role of deficit spending, MMT redefines how to responsibly use our resources so that we can maximize our potential as a society. MMT gives us the power to imagine a new politics and a new economy and move from a narrative of scarcity to one of opportunity.

Download or read book Deficit written by Marie Bussing-Burks and published by Apress. This book was released on 2011-10-14 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of this century, the American national debt stood at just under $6 trillion and the deficit at a "mere" $86 billion. Today, the national debt has topped $14 trillion, and the yearly deficit for 2011 is projected at a whopping $1.4 trillion. According to the U.S. Treasury Department's Annual Report on the Public Debt, the debt is estimated to hit $19.6 trillion by 2015. The federal government has borrowed roughly 40 percent of its total budget for the last several years, a disturbing trend that could leave the U.S. in an economic crisis. Astronomical interest payments, a debt burden to your children and grandchildren, and an increased reliance on foreign creditors are just a few of the problems. Although the U.S. has experienced soaring unemployment, stagnant production, and a crippled housing market, foremost on economists' minds are rising deficits and ballooning debt. Others feel fears of the national debt are overblown or pale in comparison to today's economic problems. This clear, concise book will give you the need-to-know on the debt. You will learn: How to calculate deficits and the national debt The history of U.S debt and its recent unparalleled growth over the years How and why the government borrows money Methods and tactics for balancing the budget The economic arguments for, and against, accruing a debt The impact of the debt on interest rates and inflation The impact of the debt on the value of the dollar and U.S. economic power This book also answers key questions: Can the government go bankrupt? Why have there seemingly been no repurcussions of the large debt to date and is that likely to change? When the interest on the debt becomes higher than the revenue of the government, what happens? And many more practical insights into the government debt controversy. Business professionals, parents, retirees, and students are all talking about the debt. This quick read will provide an understanding of the ramifications of the rising debt and what the consequences may be.

Book Synopsis Money Supply and Deficit Financing in Economic Development by : Wassim Shahin
Download or read book Money Supply and Deficit Financing in Economic Development written by Wassim Shahin and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1992-09-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Budget deficits are features of over 80 percent of the countries in the world. This book analyzes the macroeconomic impacts of these deficits by taking the approach that their stabilization consequences depend largely on their effects on money supply. The book highlights and compares, between the developing and the industrial countries, the characteristics of revenue and expenditure, the various methods of financing budget deficits and their money supply implications, the stabilization consequences of deficit financing, and various issues of monetary control and liberalization of financial markets. Since the evidence on deficits causing inflation is strongest in the developing countries of the Western Hemisphere, the emphasis of the analysis and the recommended solutions and reforms address the developing economies. The book analyzes the various financial characteristics of developing economies and the features of the revenue and the expenditure sides of budgets to determine the nature and size of deficits. The analysis proceeds by relating budget deficits to their money supply based on various methods of domestic and foreign finance in the industrial and developing worlds. The book then examines the macroeconomic consequences of large increases in money supply and evaluates policies of inflationary finance. The analysis recommends monetary control measures by providing one of the most comprehensive surveys on the relationship between monetary policy instruments and money supply in economic development. The last chapter analyzes methods for liberalizing markets for government securities and examines the experiences of Taiwan and Korea with open-market operations. Ideal as supplemental reading for courses in international money and finance, economic development, and topics in macroeconomics, this book is an important resource for policymakers involved in issues of deficits and monetary policy.

Book Synopsis 'Deficit Financing' Or 'Deficit-Reduction Financing?' Debates in Contemporary Economics by : Ann Pettifor
Download or read book 'Deficit Financing' Or 'Deficit-Reduction Financing?' Debates in Contemporary Economics written by Ann Pettifor and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of government deficits and public debt points to a fundamental error in contemporary economic discussions. It is not possible to assess the stance of fiscal policy from estimates of the public sector deficit. John Maynard Keynes's macroeconomics and the empirical evidence discussed in this paper indicate that expansionary fiscal policy financed by loan issues will lead to growth in economic activity and employment. In an economy with spare capacity and idle resources, high government expenditure generates income, including tax revenues and thereby reduces the government deficit, and cuts public debt. The main purpose of increased loan-financed government spending at times of private economic weakness is to increase the nation's income. Keynes argued that any such government spending was not deficit spending, because he understood the spending as the most sensible means to cut the deficit. Deficit-reduction spending might be a more appropriate definition, because as he argued with Josiah Stamp: “You will never balance the budget through measures which reduce national income” (Keynes, 1978, vol. 21, p. 149).
