Book Synopsis The Effectiveness of Early Defibrillation Using the Semi Automatic External Defibrillator by : John W. Rust
Download or read book The Effectiveness of Early Defibrillation Using the Semi Automatic External Defibrillator written by John W. Rust and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 930,000 deaths from cardiovascular disease occur each year in the United States. Coronary artery disease accounts for approximately 500,000 of these deaths; the majority of them are sudden deaths (AHA, 1997). These pre-hospital cardiac arrest victims deaths are caused by the deadly cardiac rhythm ventricular fibrillation (VF). Treatment for VF is rapid defibrillation. The Semi Automatic External Defibrillator (SAED) is proposed as a way for Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT's) to deliver rapid defibrillation in the field. The purpose of this study was to determine the outcomes of the SAED when used by EMT's compared to manual defibrillators used by paramedics. Outcomes were compared in terms of response time and success determined by admission to the Emergency Department with an adequate cardiac rhythm. Using an Expost Facto research design data were collected from medical records from 1992-1997. The paramedics field report and the SAED utilization report used by EMT's provided data regarding age of the patient, their sex, and the response time of the EMT's and/or paramedics. The response time and success rate of EMT's using the SAED at converting VF to an adequate cardiac rhythm were compared to the response time and success rate of paramedics using manual defibrillators. One hundred and fifty pre-hospital arrest patients in each group was studied. In the SAED group there was a 15% survival rate of reaching the Emergency Department with a pulse post cardiac arrest. The manual defibrillation group had a 17% survival rate. However, the prehospital cardiac arrest patients treated with the SAED who survived to reach the Emergency Department had a 39% chance of being discharged from the hospital alive compared to an 11% if treated by manual defibrillators. Based on a chi square test (x 2 =3.125, df=298) there was no significant difference in the two groups.

Book Synopsis Strategies to Improve Cardiac Arrest Survival by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Strategies to Improve Cardiac Arrest Survival written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-09-29 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiac arrest can strike a seemingly healthy individual of any age, race, ethnicity, or gender at any time in any location, often without warning. Cardiac arrest is the third leading cause of death in the United States, following cancer and heart disease. Four out of five cardiac arrests occur in the home, and more than 90 percent of individuals with cardiac arrest die before reaching the hospital. First and foremost, cardiac arrest treatment is a community issue - local resources and personnel must provide appropriate, high-quality care to save the life of a community member. Time between onset of arrest and provision of care is fundamental, and shortening this time is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of death and disability from cardiac arrest. Specific actions can be implemented now to decrease this time, and recent advances in science could lead to new discoveries in the causes of, and treatments for, cardiac arrest. However, specific barriers must first be addressed. Strategies to Improve Cardiac Arrest Survival examines the complete system of response to cardiac arrest in the United States and identifies opportunities within existing and new treatments, strategies, and research that promise to improve the survival and recovery of patients. The recommendations of Strategies to Improve Cardiac Arrest Survival provide high-priority actions to advance the field as a whole. This report will help citizens, government agencies, and private industry to improve health outcomes from sudden cardiac arrest across the United States.
