Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American writer Sarah Orne Jewett's compilation of works is titled "Deephaven and Selected Stories and Sketches." Originally published in 1877, the book demonstrates Jewett's astute observation of rural life and her talent for capturing the subtleties of interpersonal interactions. "Deephaven," a compilation of connected stories set in a fictional New England coastal hamlet, is the book's main attraction. Jewett creates a realistic picture of the people and dynamics of Deephaven through vivid and in-depth descriptions. The chosen tales and illustrations that Jewett created after "Deephaven" exhibit her talent for capturing the intricacies of human nature as well as the allure of small-town living. "Deephaven and Selected Stories and Sketches" is praised for its sensitive portrayals of human relationships, vivid portrayals of rural life, and late 19th-century contribution to American literary realism. The anthology is still a living example of Jewett's skill as a writer and her ability to convey the atmosphere of her day.

Book excerpt: A compilation of Sarah Orne Jewett’s essential works including Deephaven, a novel about two young women who spend a summer visiting a small coastal town. Other notable titles include “From a Mournful Villager” and “An October Ride.” Deephaven centers two young Bostonians, Kate Lancaster and her friend Helen Denis. When Kate’s aunt dies, they travel to a quaint fishing village to look after her estate. They spend the summer adjusting to the sights and sounds of their new environment. This includes meeting lively neighbors like the local fishermen, minister and lighthouse keeper. It is a beautiful and nuanced portrayal of small-town living with its memorable characters. The book also includes multiple short stories from Sarah Orne Jewett’s catalog such as “Miss Debby’s Neighbors,” “From a Mournful Villager” and “An Autumn Holiday.” In this collection, Sarah Orne Jewett delivers a vivid portrait of New England life. The tales featured in Deephaven and Selected Stories are prime examples of American literary regionalism. The author highlights a small part of the nation’s unique culture and identity. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Deephaven and Selected Stories is both modern and readable.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Deephaven This book is not wholly new, several of the chapters having already been published in the "Atlantic Monthly." It has so often been asked if Deephaven may not be found on the map of New England under another name, that, to prevent any misunderstanding, I wish to say, while there is a likeness to be traced, few of the sketches are drawn from that town itself, and the characters will in almost every case be looked for there in vain. I dedicate this story of out-of-door life and country people first to my father and mother, my two best friends, and also to all my other friends, whose names I say to myself lovingly, though I do not write them here. Book excerpt: Sarah Orne Jewett (September 3, 1849 - June 24, 1909) was an American novelist and short story writer whose works were set in or near South Berwick, Maine, a declining New England seaport town near the Maine border with New Hampshire. Jewett's father was a doctor, Jewett often accompanied him on his rounds, becoming acquainted with the sights and sounds of her native land and its people. As treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, a condition that developed in early childhood, Jewett was sent on frequent walks and through them also developed a love of nature. In later life, Jewett often visited Boston, where she was acquainted with many of the most influential literary figures of her day; but she always returned to South Berwick, the "Deephaven" of her stories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current Trends in Narratology offers an overview of cutting-edge approaches to theories of storytelling. The introduction details how new emphases on cognitive processing, non-prose and multimedia narratives, and interdisciplinary approaches to narratology have altered how narration, narrative, and narrativity are understood. The volume also introduces a third post-classical direction of research ‐ comparative narratology ‐ and describes how developments in Germany, Israel, and France may be compared with Anglophone research. Leading international scholars including Monika Fludernik, Richard Gerrig, Ansgar Nünning, John Pier, Brian Richardson, Alan Palmer, and Werner Wolf describe not only their newest research but also how this work dovetails with larger narratological developments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging the conventional understandings of literary naturalism defined primarily through its male writers, Donna M. Campbell examines the ways in which American women writers wrote naturalistic fiction and redefined its principles for their own purposes. Bitter Tastes looks at examples from Edith Wharton, Kate Chopin, Willa Cather, Ellen Glasgow, and others and positions their work within the naturalistic canon that arose near the turn of the twentieth century. Campbell further places these women writers in a broader context by tracing their relationship to early film, which, like naturalism, claimed the ability to represent elemental social truths through a documentary method. Women had a significant presence in early film and constituted 40 percent of scenario writers--in many cases they also served as directors and producers. Campbell explores the features of naturalism that assumed special prominence in women's writing and early film and how the work of these early naturalists diverged from that of their male counterparts in important ways.
