Book excerpt: Understanding how galaxies evolve is a challenge for astronomers, given the very long timescales for such evolution to occur. Fortunately, the structure of a galaxy encodes a fossil record of its evolution. In particular, by decomposing this structure into a number of independent components, we can compare the results to theoretical predictions and begin to trace the history of mass accretion and star formation that have shaped the stellar systems we see today. In this thesis, I present deep optical R-band surface photometry of the nearby edge-on spiral galaxy NGC891. This galaxy bears many similarities to the Milky Way, and thus exploring its structure can improve our understanding of our own Galaxy's evolution. Using a method developed by collaborators to carefully exposure-correct the image data and remove contributions of foreground stars, I am able to detect diffuse stellar light from NGC891 to a level 8 magnitudes (or 1500 times) fainter than the night sky background. Using one-dimensional surface brightness profiles extracted perpendicular to the galactic disk, I detect two vertically extended stellar disk components: a "thin disk" with scale height 0.6 kpc; and a "thick disk" with scale height of 1.7 kpc. The thin disk is considerably more extended than the corresponding component in the Milky Way, perhaps because of heating from the more massive molecular cloud layer in NGC891. The origin of the extended thick disk is not completely understood at this time and requires further two-dimensional modeling. Such modeling will also help constrain the presence of an extended stellar halo, which is not detected in this work.

Book excerpt: In the vast expanse of the universe, where the night sky reveals countless stars, planets, and galaxies, the pursuit of knowledge knows no bounds. Among the many tools at the disposal of astronomers and astrophysicists, photometry stands as a beacon of precision and insight. This book, "Photometry: Science, Sensitivity, and Its Connection to Astronomy," is your guided journey into the fascinating world of measuring and interpreting light in the cosmos. As you gaze upon the night sky, you might wonder: How do astronomers decipher the secrets held within the twinkling stars and distant galaxies? The answer lies in photometry, a powerful technique that allows scientists to quantify and analyze the luminous emissions of celestial objects. From determining the properties of stars and planets to unraveling the mysteries of the cosmos itself, photometry serves as the bedrock of astronomical research. In this book, we embark on an exploration of the science of photometry, delving deep into its principles, techniques, and applications. Whether you are an aspiring astronomer, a seasoned researcher, or simply a curious soul with a passion for the night sky, this book will illuminate the path to understanding the luminous tapestry of our universe.

Book excerpt: The 52 papers respond to the explosion of the search for and discovery of high redshift galaxies and the application of broad-band photometry to obtain remarkably reliable estimates of the redshifts of galaxies at all redshifts, spurred not only by the Hubble Deep Fields, but also by the advent of wide-field CCDs on ground-based telescopes and the development of sensitive infrared, submillimeter, and millimeter instrumentation. They discuss techniques, findings, and integrating new data into existing models of galaxy formation and evolution.

Book excerpt: Vistas in Astronomy, Volume 3 covers the spectacular and interesting developments in the field of astronomy. This book is organized into two main sections encompassing 18 chapters. The first part deals first with the forces that influence stellar dynamics, followed by intensive discussion on the rediscovery of planet Neptune, the concept of Einstein's light-deflection, and design requirements for large telescopes. This part also presents several astronomical instruments, Auroral investigation techniques, and observations of the Russian satellites. The second part starts with surveys of the developments of a photoelectric technique for determination of radial velocities. This part further examines the emission lines excitation in the spectra of early-type stars, as well as the color, luminosity, and evolution of the stars. Topics on star formation, galactic magnetic field, and aspects of cosmology are also covered. This book is an ideal source for astronomers, and space engineers and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The high-redshift galaxies became a distinct research ?eld during the ?nal decade of the20thcentury. AtthattimetheLyman-breaktechniquemadeitpossibletoidentify signi?cant samples of such objects, and the new generation of 8 to 10-m telescopes resulted in ?rst good spectroscopic data. Today the high-redshift galaxies have developed into one of the important topics of astrophysics, accounting for about 5–10% of the publications in the major scienti?c journals devoted to astronomy. Because high-redshift galaxies is a rapidly developing ?eld and since new results are published constantly, writing a book on this topic is challenging. On the other hand, in view of the large amount of individual results now in the literature, and in view of the still growing interest in this topic, it appears worthwhile to summarize and evaluate the available data and to provide an introduction for those who wish to enter this ?eld, or who, for various reasons, might be interested in its results. The end of the ?rst decade of the 21st century appears to be a good point in time to attempt such a summary. The current generation of ground-based 8 to 10-m - optical telescopes, the Hubble Space Telescope, and the most important large radio telescopes have by now been in operation since about one or two decades. Although these instruments will continue to produce important scienti?c results for some time to come, many of the initial programs exploiting their unique new possibilities have been completed.
